Biological Field Technician

Near Casper or Douglas WY

WEST has an opening for a biological field technician near Casper or Douglas, Wyoming. The primary responsibility of this position is to conduct post-construction monitoring surveys at an operational wind facility. Additional tasks may include include participating in bias trials to monitor scavenger rates and search efficiency rates, raptor nest surveys, avian point counts, and other tasks on an as needed basis. Duties include following survey protocols to collect data, bird identification, data collection, reporting, and general data and schedule management. Candidates should have previous avian and renewable energy experience, with a preference for work in the western US. Technician must be able to walk over rough terrain for extend periods of time. Technician may work independently or in small crews and must be able to communicate and coordinate effectively with site management and WEST supervisors. Technicians will be required to follow all safety protocols for WEST and clients. Work vehicles and field equipment will be provided by WEST; however, field technicians must be equipped with and provide own suitable footwear, clothing, and binoculars.

This position will transition into seasonal fall and winter work. The position will exist as long as the work contracts are maintained. No weekend or holiday work is anticipated. Limited travel will be required.

Hours: 35-45 hours per week (overtime at time and a half for over 40 hours)



Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology or equivalent degree preferred. Undergraduates, individuals currently seeking a degree, and other enthusiastic workers are encouraged to apply. Good bird identification skills for species in the region, specifically raptors, are required. Must demonstrate ability to work on biological field studies or prior field experience; must be able to work independently and interact positively with project managers, clients, landowners, and others. Candidates experienced in raptor identification/behaviors will be given preference.


Applicants must be able to cope with winter temperatures and conditions can be extreme. Experience with 4x4 vehicles is required. Skilled use of topographic maps, GPS units, and other field equipment is desired

Job requires the person filling this position be able to appear for work on time; walk over rough terrain on a regular basis; to follow instructions from manager and team leader; to interact effectively with coworkers and clients; to maintain positive attitude; and to accept guidance and constructive criticism. Willingness to learn new skills and participate in a variety of field efforts is critical. Precise and thorough data collection is essential.
