Natural Resources Specialist 3 - Field Botanist

Parma OH

Field Botanist works in the Plant Community Assessment Program to assist with long-term vegetation monitoring in Cleveland Metroparks. Leads field crews and assures quality control for intensive vegetation sampling. Reports to Vegetation Research Coordinator at West Creek Reservation. Works at reservations across the Cleveland Metroparks District. Housing may be available at $75/month rent, renter's insurance required.



Leading a 2-3 person field crew to implement vegetation monitoring protocol

Navigating to, set-up and sample 0.1 hectare (20 m x 50 m) permanent vegetation plots

Recording and maintenance of accurate and well-organized data in written and electronic format

Identifying all plant species (herbaceous, shrub, and tree), estimating plant coverage, measuring vertical structure and identifying deer browse

Collecting and preparing plant voucher specimens

Collecting soil samples and/or preparing soil samples

Safely operating and maintaining equipment including but not limited to forestry measurement tools, portable data collectors, and other related equipment.

Assisting in the development of reports and maps, performing data entry, verification and analysis and making presentations related to assigned projects when directed.



Natural Resource Specialist 3 seasonals have significant progress, usually two to three years or more, towards a related college undergraduate degree or have progress toward a graduate degree, in natural resources, natural sciences, i.e., biology, geology, hydrology, etc., forestry, wildlife management, environmental science or related field, or equivalent, or several years of strong (more than one year) natural resource management or research experience, or other relevant experience.

Prior experience with vegetation sampling (particularly the Vegetation Index of Biotic Integrity) and qualitative wetland assessment (Ohio Rapid Assessment Method for Wetlands) is preferred.

Familiarity with Ohio Flora including wetland plants.

Ability to read maps, follow written directions, and navigate through forest or wetland areas.

Experience in computer applications including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and/or GIS and GPS and associated hardware is desirable.

Good written and verbal communication skills

Demonstrated responsible attitude and work ethic.

Demonstrated ability to work independently or as a member of a diverse team to achieve project goals in a timely manner.

Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain a positive working relationship with the public and Cleveland Metroparks staff.

Demonstrated ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays as needed.

Ability to work in adverse conditions including rain, high or low temperatures, high humidity, insects, and difficult terrain.

Ability to walk up to 8 miles daily through challenging terrain including heavy vegetation, wetlands, and steep slopes.

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

Must have a good driving record (less than six (6) active points on driving records at the application stage of the hiring process) and possess a valid Ohio driver's license.

Candidates subject to a background and drug screen.


Work Schedule: Must be willing to work a varying schedule to include weekends, evenings and holidays - Up to 1000 hours per year
