Better batteries drive better technology. At PNNL, our researchers advance the growing and significant field of batteries through expertise in materials, manufacturing, and design. Our achievements in battery technology range from the creation of a new class of vanadium redox flow batteries—often used for grid energy storage—to powering devices the size of two grains of rice.
The position is for a highly motivated and established scientist working in energy storage systems. The successful candidate join a team of over 40 world-class scientists and engineers working on a diverse portfolio of storage technologies. Specifically, this position will play a leadership role to develop new innovative electrochemical device architectures and manufacturing techniques to more effectively utilize materials and reduce the cost for energy storage.
• Lead cutting-edge battery research; develop partnerships with other national labs, industry, academia, and defense agencies to advance and enable next generation energy storage technologies.
• Work closely with the Department of Energy (DOE) and Department of Defense (DOD) sponsors to accelerate the development and deployment of new technologies for mobile and stationary energy storage applications.
• Working with members of technical and management teams to lead proposals that are directed at meeting PNNL business sector and business volume targets.
• Publication of key scientific findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals as well as presentation of scientific work at professional conferences.
• Participation in professional societies at the regional and national.
• BS/BA with 7 years of experience, MS/MA with 5 years of experience, or PhD with 3 years of experience.
• PhD and 4+ years of relevant experience plus distinguished personal achievement.
• Extensive publication record, including authoring seminal reports/publications, and delivering keynote addresses at relevant national and international forums.
• Widely recognized authority in energy storage and/or batteries-related research whose technical contributions are recognized as having a substantial impact on advancing the current state of knowledge and understanding of electrochemical energy storage systems.
• Demonstrated experience developing and leading innovative R&D programs of significant size and impact across multiple institutions from industry, academia and national laboratories.
• Demonstrated leadership of multidisciplinary efforts to provide solutions to complex problems where the problems are characterized by lack of precedents, source material, or lack of prior success.
• Evidence of attracting significant R&D funding, influencing and setting strategy, and mentoring scientists across the scientific community.
Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
