WEST is seeking a senior bat biologist to help WEST’s continued growth in the field of bat ecology and wind-energy. Candidates will have the opportunity to lead studies designed to estimate, to better understand, and minimize wind-energy’s impacts to bats. This is an exciting opportunity for the ideal candidate to be a leader in the field of bat ecology and wind-development, work with well-respected statisticians to design quantitative research studies and approaches to problems facing bat populations, and provide guidance to the wind industry, other researchers, wildlife agencies, and WEST staff on the most defensible and effective methods for assessing and reducing wind-energy’s impact to bat populations. The location of the position is flexible, depending on the qualifications of the candidate.
Job duties will include:
Design and lead studies designed to estimate, better understand, and minimize impacts to bats from wind-energy and other forms of development
Design cost effective strategies for the wind industry to avoid and minimize impacts to bats
Lead efforts to help design and assess the effectiveness of bat deterrents and other technology for reducing potential impacts to bats
Assess the effect of wind-energy to individual bats and species at the population level
Provide guidance on the most appropriate field and analysis methods to project managers for assessing risk of proposed wind and other development projects on bats
Pursue and obtain non-wind related monitoring and research projects related to bats
Assist in the development of habitat conservation plans for threatened and endangered bat species
Represent WEST by presenting research and new ideas at scientific and industry meetings and forums
Publish the results of research investigations in peer-reviewed journals
Prepare proposals and scientific reports
Provide senior level review of bat related reports, research projects, and approaches for minimizing impacts to bats
Supervising, coaching, and mentoring junior employeesMarket WEST’s capabilities
Foster current business relationships and promote new business development efforts

The senior bat biologist we are seeking has a great opportunity to conduct meaningful research and make recommendations that will benefit bat populations, and to help WEST continue to grow as a science based ecological consulting firm. The successful candidate must be a self-starter who possesses:
Minimum of a Bachelor’sdegree in bat related research or equivalent experience. A Master’s or PhD degree and previous professional experience in environmental consulting is desired
Previous project management experience (preferably 5+ years),including budgeting, and proposal writing experience, consulting work, professional scientific experience, and a track record of maintaining positive relationships with coworkers, clients or stakeholders
Experience with wind-energy’s impacts on bats
Demonstrated experience conducting bat research, including publication in peer-reviewed journals
Strong, competent writing skills with the ability to pay close attention to detail and accurately report the scientific methods and results of field studies
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral
Good time management, project management and organizational skills with the ability to work well under time constraints and meet deliverable targets and deadlines
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with other employees, supervisors, researchers, wildlife agencies, and the energy industry
Ability to effectively supervise others
Successful candidates must be able to pass a background check; a pre-employment drug screen; and a DMV records check that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company. A valid driver’s license will be required. Candidates must adhere to all health and safety requirements.
