Natural Resources Technician

Multiple US Locations 

Student or Non-Student (Temporary Hourly) positions are available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). Positions are available at the following locations and are contingent on project award and funding.


CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and other departments within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

The successful candidates will provide assistance to natural resources managers at Air Force installations with the implementation of projects related to the stewardship of natural resources as indicated in the

installations’ Integrated Natural Resources Management Plans (INRMPs). The natural resources program tasks assigned at each installation are temporary and seasonal in nature. Work assigned to the successful candidates will require entry-level knowledge in natural resources management.

Tasks assigned may include, but are not limited to, the following subject areas.

• Fish and Wildlife Management: fish and wildlife surveys, population monitoring, habitat mapping, invasive species control andmanagement

• Threatened and Endangered Species Management: species inventories, population monitoring, habitat mapping, and assistance for implementing conservation requirements

• Outdoor Recreation Management: ensure recreationists are utilizing the appropriate areas as outlined in the INRMP to avoid disturbance to soils, vegetation, and endangered species; maintain interpretive nature trails and recreation facilities

• Forest Management: survey and update data

• Wetlands Protection and Management: inventory and restoration

• Protection of Coastal and Marine Resources: habitat mapping, inventory and analysis; and implementing shoreline-habitat-restoration projects

• Livestock Grazing and Agriculture Outleasing: monitoring effects of grazing on native ecosystems and sensitive species

• Land Management: introducing native plants in landscapes, invasive species control, urban forest management, and soil-erosion control



The successful candidate must be a current college student or recent graduate with a background in wildlife management/biology, forestry, rangeland, or another field related to natural resources. Some professional work experience is preferred. The successful candidate should have excellent communication skills and be a self-starter, enthusiastic, attentive to detail, have a good work ethic, be flexible with regard to helping with a variety of projects, and have an interest in exploring a civilian military environmental career. Candidates should be excited about gaining experience in supporting Air Force operations and open to learning about the management of natural resources on military lands.

The successful candidate should have the ability to work well with others, walk long distances in adverse terrain and weather conditions, be agreeable to working flexible hours, and have experience navigating with GPS, maps, and compasses. Field days will typically start very early and potentially extend to 10 or 12 hours. Successful candidate must be able to demonstrate US citizenship and have or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.



Housing is not provided for these positions. The pay rate is elevated to offset living expenses.

The desired start date is late April to mid-May with the potential expected end date in mid-August to November. The duration of employment is location-specific and will be discussed in more detail during the interview.

The rate is $15 per hour plus an additional $3 per hour to offset living expenses, for a total of $18 per hour.
