Executive and Development Associate

Blue Ridge Conservancy is a successful, nationally accredited land trust that serves the state’s seven northwestern counties – Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, Wilkes, Avery, Mitchell and Yancey. Our mission is to work with landowners and local communities to permanently protect land and water resources with agricultural, ecological, cultural, recreational, and scenic value. BRC has protected over 20,000 acres. In addition, development of the Middle Fork Greenway, a paved bike and pedestrian path that will connect the communities of Boone and Blowing Rock in Watauga County, is a current major project.



Boone is a progressive community with a strong tourism economy, agricultural heritage and is home to Appalachian State University. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, Boone and the surrounding area offer numerous recreation opportunities. These opportunities include Grandfather Mountain, New River and Elk Knob State Parks, hiking on the Mountains to Sea Trail and other trail networks, canoeing on and fishing in beautiful rivers, such as the New River and Watauga River, and cycling on the Blue Ridge Parkway, as well as other scenic byways in the area.



Blue Ridge Conservancy’s Executive and Development Associate will be a motivated, skilled, innovative team-player who thrives in a hard-working environment and enjoys taking charge and achieving results. He or she must be an independent, strategic thinker with strong analytical and organizational skills. The ability to manage multiple priorities with tight timelines is essential. The successful candidate will work closely with the Executive Director, other staff, volunteers and the Board of Trustees to assist in all areas of development, including fundraising, implementing strategies and initiatives for increased funding, developing relationships with all donors, stakeholders and prospects to advance BRC’s mission. It is preferable that he or she will possess experience in nonprofit board administration and working with chief development officers.

The Executive and Development Associate will play a key role in the organization and requires that the individual have a confident, polished approach. The person must present a professional image coupled with excellent verbal, written and presentation skills. He or she must understand the interpersonal dynamics involved in effective fundraising. The successful candidate must be articulate, sociable, intelligent with integrity and have the ability to develop strong relationships with investors in BRC. It isessential that he or she must share the staff’s passion and interest for conservation, land protection and environmental work.


Qualifications and duties

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and ability required.

-Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five (5) years of experience as executive assistant providing administration and development support to chief executive or nonprofit executive director.

-Demonstrated ability to work in a team setting with a high level of energy. The ability to work independently on his or her own initiative with a high sense of integrity.

-Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate projects and programs. Specific experience in projects that are designed to raise funds and expand an organization’s base of support is preferred.

-Ability to listen perceptively and verbally communicate with a wide range of people.

-Exceptional written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills, ability to maintain confidentiality with a history of exercising discretion.

-Strong skills with word processing and preferably experience with donor database software (Little Green Light). Proficient with Microsoft Office, Excel and Power Point. Familiarity with and comfortable with social networking sites and internet fundraising.

-Work closely with the Executive Director to prepare written materials, including correspondence, solicitation letters, acknowledgement letters and regular communications as part of the development program.

-Work closely with the Executive Director to assist in soliciting gifts from major and mid-level donors and assist in targeting foundations and corporations to meet organizational funding needs.

-Comfortable in settings with donors and discussing BRC programs and activities while listening for opportunities for gifts and donations. Soliciting donations directly when appropriate.

-Managing contacts, solicitations, and appropriate interest/background information for donors and prospects. Ability to anticipate and help the Executive Director respond to the needs of major and mid-level donors.

-Coordinate Board members, staff and volunteers to help implement development program and fundraising events. Coordinate and assist the Executive Director in executing donor cultivation and recognition events.

-Assist the Executive Director as lead staff member for Development Committee and as liaison to Board of Trustees.

-Work closely with and assist the Executive Director in soliciting planned gifts and provide stewardship to donors who have already committed to such gifts.

-Personal passion for the environment and the mission of BRC. A working understanding of land conservation and ability to communicate a personal conservation message.

-Ability to travel to assist the Executive Director in development and fundraising events and meetings. Weekend and evening availability required.



Salary range is $45,000.00 - $55,000.00, plus benefits, including retirement and monthly health insurance stipend. BRC is an Equal Opportunity Employer without regard to race, color, age, sex, sexual orientation, religion, or national origin.
