Writer and Community Coordinator

Arlington VA

Position Overview

The Writer and Community Coordinator will plan, write, and edit regular written content that leads to greater engagement of Oceanic Society’s constituents including travelers, donors, online community, Blue Habits community, and social media followers. Under the guidance of Oceanic Society’s Vice President of Outreach, this position works in collaboration with the program staff to plan and execute a regular schedule of written content for Oceanic Society’s email lists, blog, and social media profiles, as well as for print materials including travel brochures, flyers, and letters.

 

Job Responsibilities and Outcomes

Job responsibilities and key outcomes for this position include, but are not limited to:

Plan and Coordinate Written Content. Collaborate with the Vice President of Outreach, Conservation Travel Program Director, Blue Habits Program Manager, and other key staff to develop a regular editorial calendar of marketing emails, blog posts, social media posts, and other written communications that support community engagement. Includes:

Coordinate needs from multiple programs (travel, Blue Habits, fundraising, conservation programs) into a single schedule;

Conceive, propose, and create new written content that supports the community engagement needs of all Oceanic Society’s programs;

Conduct research on new potential written content (e.g. audience research, keyword research, market research) and evaluate existing written content for opportunities.

Communicate regularly with other staff regarding content timing, needs, and results.

Coordinate contributions of written content from Oceanic Society staff and partners.

Produce Written Content Regularly. Regularly create written content (e.g. blog posts, marketing emails, social media posts, travel guides/pamphlets, web copy) that supports community engagement in alignment with programmatic goals. Includes:

Write at least 1 original blog post and 1 marketing email per month, plus at least 2 unique social media post per week.

Produce a balance of timeless/evergreen and time-bound content.

Ensure all content is optimized for search and derived from research and planning.

Write and edit web copy for Oceanic Society’s websites as needed.

Edit and Repurpose Written Content. Edit written content created by other staff members and partners prior to publication, including trip reports, blog posts, fact sheets, trip information sheets, itineraries, trip descriptions, etc. Repurpose existing written content (blogs, web copy, fact sheets, etc.) as needed to support overall community engagement goals.

Publish Content. Format and publish written content to Oceanic Society email lists (via Mailchimp), social media profiles, websites, and blogs in accordance with editorial calendar.

Manage Lists. Work with the vice president of outreach to effectively manage and segment Oceanic Society’s mailing lists of donors, online community members, past travelers, and other constituents to support targeted communications and engagement.

Evaluate and Adapt. Track and compile qualitative and quantitative analytics regarding content performance to inform future content creation and strategic decision-making.

 

Expected Skills and Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required

2+ years of digital community management

2+ years writing in a professional context

Proven organizational skills and attention to detail

Excellent English writing, editing, grammatical, spelling, and proofreading skills

Self-directed and proactive

Experience writing for digital platforms and social media accounts

Experience with blogging / content management systems (CMS)

Working knowledge of ocean conservation themes and issues

Experience monitoring and using web analytics to inform decision-making

Familiarity with email marketing platforms (e.g. Mailchimp)

Familiar with collaborative business tools such as the Google suite of apps (Sheets, Docs, etc.) and Slack

Travel industry / ecotourism / nature-based tourism experience preferred

Non-profit industry experience preferred

Knowledge of SEO / SEM best practices and keyword research techniques preferred

Image editing and graphic design skills preferred

Desire to work as part of a mission-driven organization dedicated to ocean conservation

 

Salary & Benefits

This is a full-time position, and is eligible for all Oceanic Society benefits; salary commensurate with experience. The position is based in Oceanic Society’s office in Arlington, VA, USA.
