Senior Director of Urban Forestry

Washington DC

SUMMARY: The senior director of urban forestry is responsible for planning, strategizing and overseeing implementation of American Forests’ urban initiatives.


Responsibilities include:

A. Direct the Urban Forests for Climate & Health initiative;

B. Direct the Tree Equity: Career Pathways initiative;

C. Direct Community ReLeaf partnership initiatives in cities nationwide;

D. Direct the National Register of Champion Trees initiative;

E. Direct management of Vibrant Cities Lab (vibrantcitieslab.com) with the US Forest Service;

F. Direct the Roots of Rock forest health initiative;

G. Speak, write and serve as a visible urban forestry leader to help communicate the work and values of American Forests to diverse audiences;

H. Manage budgets, reporting, developing new initiatives and other duties as assigned.


Six staff and a senior advisor currently report to this position.


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: A minimum of five years of experience specifically in the field of urban forestry is required. The ideal candidate is a self-motivated, interdisciplinary thinker with a passion for urban resilience and sustainability, entrepreneurial motivation, and an attention to detail. The candidate must have very strong personnel management, project management, and written / verbal communication experience and skills. The candidate should have experience transforming grant deliverables into impactful actions. A combination of education and professional experience will be considered in determining qualifications.

REQUISITE EDUCATION OR CERTIFICATIONS: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in urban forestry, natural resource management, forestry, environmental science, landscape architecture or related field. Working knowledge of the urban forestry discipline and organizations is required. Master’s degree in a relevant field and ISA Arborist certification are favorable.

WORKING CONDITIONS: This position is mandatorily based at our headquarters in Washington, DC. Regular travel will be required outside of the Washington, DC area, including speaking at outdoor events and conferences. Most work will be in a general office environment, with some local meetings outside of the office.
