Development Assistant

Farmington CT

The Farmington Land Trust’s mission is to protect open space in perpetuity through acquisition, stewardship, education and advocacy. As one of Connecticut's oldest land trusts, The Farmington Land Trust has pursued this goal since its founding in 1971. Thanks to the generosity of its donors, the Land Trust now protects 300 acres of fields, forests, wetlands, scenic vistas, historic sites and wildlife habitat from development.

The Land Trust is governed by a Board of Directors as a private, non-profit, tax-exempt organization supported by town residents dedicated to the preservation of open space. It is run out of its office in Farmington Village with a part time Executive Director, an active Board of Directors, and a large group of enthusiastic volunteers.



The Development Assistant is a temporary three-year, part time position responsible for assisting the Executive Director and volunteers in the administrative activities of the Land Trust’s Capital Campaign and other organizational development efforts (with the possibility of continuance beyond the three-year tenure). Reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Chairs of the Capital Campaign, Development, and Membership committees.


Job Responsibilities

DonorQuest software

Enter incoming contributions

Create and manage donor categories

Generate mailing lists

Produce reports for analysis


Annual Fund and Membership

Support Executive Director and Committee efforts to generate fundraising letters

Generate thank you notes to donors

Assist in creating membership recruitment vehicles


Fundraising Events

Support Event Committee volunteer efforts

Assisting with event planning


Education Programming

Assist Executive Director and Development Committee with program calendar

Follow up with speakers/presenters for scheduling, payment, etc.


Capital Campaign

Support Capital Campaign committee volunteer efforts

Track donor outreach on DonorQuest

Support Executive Director and Committee efforts to generate fundraising letters

Generate thank you notes to donors



Occasional backup to Treasurer inputting development data into QuickBooks


Experience, Abilities & Skills

Minimum 1-3 years in office administration, non-profit development experience, project coordination, and event management preferred.

Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, follow through, and strong time management; skills in working with volunteers and team building; problem solving and ability to prioritize multiple tasks required.

Writing, proof reading, and good grammar skills required.

Ability to work independently and take initiative required.

Excellent skills and experience in word processing, internet research required.

Experience in DonorQuest or other donor software, and QuickBooks, a plus. The ability to learn new software is required.

Flexibility in work schedule is required.



Temporary, three-year position with possible continuance past the three-year tenure.

Salaried non-benefited position at 30 hours a week. Flexible schedule to accommodate special and weekend events.

Remote work, with possible onsite as pandemic conditions change. Farmington Land Trust is committed to a safe and secure environment for staff and employees.

Compensation is commensurate with skills and experience.
