SolarFarmer Modelling Specialist

The Energy division of global engineering consultancy DNV GL works at the cutting edge of renewable energy. Our expertise helps clients around the world to get the most out of wind farms, solar farms and new technologies including wave, tidal and energy storage. The Software Tools & products (STP) department is our in-house software team designing, creating and managing applications relied upon by engineers across the renewable energy industry on desktop, web and mobile platforms.

DNV GL’s global solar PV advisory business operates globally, providing a broad range of services to our clients including energy yield assessments, production reconciliation, preliminary plant design, technology reviews and due diligence services.

SolarFarmer is a desktop PV plant design and modelling package that has been developed by STP in conjunction with the solar PV advisory business. As the product nears internal testing and validation prior to an external release, there is a need for a dedicated PV modelling specialist to join the project team and augment the expertise present in DNV GL’s global solar advisory team.

The position is within the Software Tools and Products (STP) department which is a 40-strong department of software developers, computer aided engineering experts, user experience specialists, testing and operations staff, and product managers responsible for the development of software and digital services with the Energy division of DNV GL. The majority of the STP department is based on our Bristol, UK office. DNV GL’s solar advisory business has staff located in many offices around the world, but key expertise for SolarFarmer is located in the Bay Area, California.

In this position, the individual will report into the Head of Section, Developers’ Software Portfolio and will work with Solar advisory staff, STP developers, testers, UX specialists and Product Managers throughout DNV GL Energy.

 

Tasks May Include

Research and develop new algorithms modelling the behaviour of PV system components in response to ongoing technological developments and advisory business requirements; collaborate with other DNV advisory specialists doing the same

Gain a deep familiarity with and take ownership of the calculation chain in SolarFarmer, consistently evaluating its performance (accuracy and speed) and proposing enhancements as appropriate

Work closely with software development team on implementation, testing and optimisation

Test and validate new models as they are developed

Work with SolarFarmer Product Owner to prioritise and schedule development work

Provide input to the SolarFarmer product plan to help define the future direction of the product, anticipating changes in the market and staying abreast of the rapid pace of innovations in PV technology

Engage with DNV GL internal staff and external clients to discuss SolarFarmer performance and feature requests

Participate in development team meetings, including daily scrums and sprint reviews and planning

 

Position Qualifications

Postgraduate qualification in Engineering or Physics required

5 years of experience in PV modelling and analysis required

Willingness and ability to travel, approximately 20% of the time domestically and 20% of the time internationally

Able to apply broad and detailed knowledge of PV system modelling techniques to derive industry-leading modelling algorithms

Excellent attention to detail

Uses testing and validation of software performance to identify issues and areas where accuracy and or performance can be improved

An ability to multitask across several R&D projects, potentially running simultaneously

An ability to work successfully within the constraints of the project: quality, time, budget.

Ability to clearly define and document algorithms ready for implementation by software developers

Demonstrates user engagement in the development of software solutions through product discovery (including user interviews), story map generation, wireframe creation and user testing

Effective communication with key stakeholders including product owners, other subject matter experts, software developers and testers, users

Works efficiently and effectively
