Borrego Solar Systems, Inc., a leading national engineering, financing, design, construction, operation and maintenance firm concentrating on the development of solar and energy storage systems for the commercial, utility, and public sectors, seeks a Director of Engineering to join our team in Chicago, IL.

About the Position: The Director Engineering will work with a team of professional engineers (EE, SE, CE), design engineers, project managers and engineering consultants to review and design, prospective commercial and utility solar PV projects ranging in size from 1MW to 20MW. Primary duties include the creation of plan sets, applications and due diligence associated with the permitting and entitlement of ground mounted solar systems as well as engineering support to the construction team through the construction phases of the project. Additionally, we are looking for right person to support in the hiring of associated positions for this up and coming market. Communication is critical as we expect this Director to lead by example and work to transplant the Borrego Solar culture in a new office and market.
Position Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
Balance due diligence efforts with projects risks for continued development of solar projects for Borrego Solar.
Coordinate the proposal and work of our outsourced partners.
Directly manage including HR responsibilities over a growing team proposed of 2 Senior Design Engineer, 2 Design Engineers, and an Electrical Engineer to be established in the first of the year.
Support the project level direction of the local civil team. Initially HR responsibilities of the civil team will continue to report up through the Director of Development Engineering.

Support the coordination of this office with other established departments located in other offices including finance and operations engineering.
Management of the team to annual revenue, cost, bookings and lead time goals.
Training and follow up of new employees on VSM, PDCA, BSOE, 4DX and general problem solving based on lean fundamentals.
Present to Borrego’s executive and investment groups regarding pipeline projects and status.
Implement Quality Control for the engineering component of our projects.
Other duties, as assigned by leadership.
Desired Skills and Experience:
Master’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering and 2 years’ experience as a designer on design/build projects in the Engineering/Construction industry.
Alternatively, the employer will accept bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Power Engineering and 5 years’ experience as a designer on design/build projects in the Engineering/Construction industry.
Minimum 2 years full-time experience in Engineering Management.
Ability to work independently and effectively with project managers, clients, consulting engineers, design, and technical personnel as well as manufacturing partners
Must be open minded, creative, and possess the ability to modify and expand theories to find creative solutions within the confines of the code.
The successful candidate must be a high energy, resourceful and organized engineering professional. The ability to manage multiple projects is a must.
Ability to effectively communicate design concepts and participate in meetings between clients, project engineers, code officials and third-party consultants
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Passionate about solar energy!
Specific Skills or Other Requirements:
Experience with relevant codes and the entitlement process.
Knowledge of PV system design.
Experience with cost estimation of designs.
Computer proficiency – AutoCAD, MS Office and MS Project a must; Salesforce experience a plus.
Possess the ability to substantiate code interpretations and mathematically prove design concepts.
