Energy Storage Engineer

Houston TX


The Energy Storage Engineer is responsible for managing the technical aspects of project development for EDPR-NA’s utility-scale renewable (PV/wind) + storage and stand-alone storage projects. The person in this role will be evaluating available and emerging storage technologies along with analyzing projects during the prospecting and due diligence phases of the development cycle.


Main accountabilities:

• Conceptually design utility-scale energy storage systems and renewable assets + storage that minimizes the levelized cost of energy (LCOE)

• Perform energy storage degradation modeling for multiple project-specific use cases and energy storage technologies across the projects’ useful life

• Determine optimal energy storage system sizing based on technology, modeled degradation, augmentation, and system life

• Provide detailed cost inputs to CapEx and OpEx models

• Coordinate cross-functionally to prepare technical specifications relating to energy storage systems that may be used in EPC agreements and competitive bids

• Collaborate closely with various departments including Development, Origination, Procurement, Finance, Energy Assessment, Engineering, and Construction to conduct technical planning and due diligence evaluations

• Support value-engineering approach when designing energy storage systems in multiple project-specific use cases

• Provide reports to management by producing regular and frequent project status updates and other reporting documents

• Communicate information continuously and effectively to cross-functional teams

• Assist in technical vendor reviews and qualifications

• Review and evaluate technical aspects of EPC bidder’s proposals pertaining to energy storage during the course of EPC selection

• Provide technical support to the Development, Engineering, and Construction teams for preparation and execution of bids

• Provide technical support to the Procurement team for the preparation and execution of RFP’s for vendors and contractors

• Additional duties as required


Direct reports: None

Travel: up to 50%


Minimum qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited educational institution

• 2 - 4 years of technical/engineering experience in the energy industry

• Experience in energy storage designs required (specifically battery-based)

• Strong verbal and written communication skills required

• Experience in PV performance modeling preferred (e.g. PVSyst)

• Strong knowledge of Solar PV technology and engineering is preferred

• Proficient knowledge of the full Microsoft Office suite; high proficiency in Excel required

• Knowledge of engineering economics and design optimization

• Existing relationships and familiarity with energy storage equipment vendors a plus

• Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills

• Ability and willingness to travel and work extended hours as needed


Physical Requirements:

• Sitting/Standing/Flexibility: Ability to stand and sit for 8 or more hours when in an office environment

• Walking: Ability to walk .5 to 2 miles per day, including across unpaved and rough surfaces when on project sites.

• Speech/Reading: Ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently and deliver a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form

• Lifting: Ability to lift items weighing up to 10 pounds

• Vision/Hearing: Ability to understand a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form

• Tolerance to Extreme Weather Conditions: Ability to work in adverse weather conditions 25% of the time while on project sites.

• Safety: Ability to understand and communicate safety precautions when necessary




Bachelors or better in Engineering.
