The Principal Wind Engineer will support 3500 MW of wind turbines across the United States through support of the field operations team, analysis, project management, and root cause analysis. This includes contribution to and development of the Asset Integrity Management and Asset Performance Management platforms for optimization.
The position is based in the Scottsdale, Arizona office.
Be the primary contact responsible for the development and execution of the turbine life cycle reliability platform
Project management of major technical issues to improve revenue generation for the wind fleet
Program management of the wind fleet technical optimization
Program development and execution of the Asset Integrity Platform for the wind fleet. Research operational and repair methods to improve the generation and lifespan of wind turbines
Contribution to and development of the Asset Performance Platform for the wind fleet
Occasional cross support to the Solar and Battery operations teams for mechanical support
Evaluate and perform root cause analyses (RCA) on turbine main component and high impact failures and faults.
Support teams of wind technicians to advise on field activities and corrective action.
Create and contribute to maintenance procedures, work instructions, safety procedures. This includes implementation of Reliability Centered Maintenance practices for the fleet.
Make recommendations on equipment maintenance, equipment manufactures’, and tooling based on objective observations.
Review of new technology to support new project development efforts
Development of engineering standards for the Clearway Energy Group
Perform engineering support to field personnel, for corrective and preventative maintenance of wind turbines.
Adhere to appropriate company health, safety, environment and quality processes for the business utilizing industry best practice.
Participate as a team member promoting initiatives to improve component performance, quality, and functionality.
Participate in continuous improvement process relating to fleet-wide initiatives
Travel, including overnight with short notice (up to 25%)
Knowledge & Skills
Capable of contributing in a team environment with site personnel as well as third party contractors
The ability to work independently and make decisions independently if necessary
The ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with site management, site supervisors, engineering staff, and regional management. Ability to communicate technical concepts to both a technical audience and a non-technical audience
Must have an in-depth understanding of rotating machinery and reliability of equipment
Must possess a good understanding of maintenance plans
The ability to interpret and follow technical instruction furnished in verbal, written, diagrammatic and schedule formats
The ability to read and interpret drawings, technical manuals, and commissioning reports
The ability to troubleshoot turbine faults, failures, and offline turbines.
Must possess a valid driver’s license
Knowledge of IEC 61400 standards for wind
Knowledge of proper use LOTO for energy isolation
Knowledge of FEM for loads the tower and foundation
Knowledge of FAST of BLADED for turbine loads
Knowledge of Python and SQL for analytical modeling
Understanding of full turbine lifecycle analysis and reliability program implementation
Knowledge of Monte Carlo simulation experience
Knowledge of Weibull or similar lifetime and failure rate prediction techniques
The ability to travel with a short-term notice to Clearway Energy sites throughout the continental U.S
Able to climb wind turbines with or without a climb assist. Capable of working at heights of up to 300 feet
Employee may be required to work flexible work hours
Experience & Education
Bachelor's degree in Engineering required. MS, or PhD in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is highly preferred
Minimum of 10 years of experience in engineering or field operations and maintenance, is required
Experience with multiple brands of wind turbines is highly preferred
Experience with setup and design of experiment for in field measurements
Experience with analytical processing of sensor data
