Cultural Resource Team Lead

Portland OR

Are you passionate about quality cultural resources work and superior client service? SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an experienced, self-motivated cultural resources consultant to lead our Portland cultural resources team. You should reside or have experience in the Pacific Northwest and be prepared to be a key member of our Portland office leadership group.

As Cultural Resources Team Lead, you will support office goals by pursuing project opportunities, managing large projects and clients, directing cultural resource fieldwork, and supervising and mentoring staff. Duties

Provide strong, positive, forward-looking leadership for your team

Ensure the quality and integrity of the team's technical products

Supervise, mentor, and support staff in all aspects of their responsibilities, including on multi-disciplinary projects

Lead and assist with business development efforts in the Portland/Oregon market

Enhance SWCA's professional reputation and relationships with clients, stakeholders, local/state/federal agencies, and tribal communities

Build client relationships; take initiative and resolve issues to ensure that client needs are met effectively and quickly

Serve as project manager for a variety of cultural resource projects, including survey, monitoring, and data recovery/excavation/mitigation projects involving both archaeological and architectural resources

Author, co-author, and edit technical reports, permit applications, NEPA documents, and proposals

Organize equipment and logistical arrangements for field projects

Attend and/or present at local, regional, and national conferences and forums

Work closely with SWCA's other staff in both natural and cultural resources throughout the company to promote SWCA's business interests in adherence to its mission, vision, and values

Act with commitment to the Portland office's core values of integrity, teamwork, and communication

 

Requirements 

Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in archaeology, historic architecture, or a related field is required; graduate degree preferred

Minimum of five (5) years of experience conducting cultural resource technical work in a consulting context and at a high (e.g., Project Manager or Principal Investigator) level

Extensive working knowledge of federal, state, and local cultural resource laws and regulations in the Pacific Northwest, and particularly with those of the state of Oregon and local governments in the Portland metro area

Experience with tribes and with local, state, and federal agencies in the Pacific Northwest of the sort that is required for successful project completion

Demonstrated business development success and consulting acumen, including established credibility with federal and state reviewing agencies and clients, as well as success in proposal writing

Demonstrated experience in supervising, mentoring, and providing leadership for other professionals

Advanced skills and knowledge in one or more specialty technical areas (e.g., artifact analysis, historic architecture, etc.)

Prior experience using GIS software (ArcPad) and Trimble GPS units

Must be able to travel and be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, in sometimes inclement weather conditions, including walking up to 10 miles per day, often in rugged terrain, and be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds

Prior primary report authorship in a cultural resources consulting context for a variety of project types, in a variety of regions, and with a variety of agencies

Excellent writing skills and ability to record accurate field notes

Ability to conduct library and internet research

PC computer skills including a strong working proficiency in MS Windows and MS Office (Excel/Word/PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat

Ability to take initiative, resolve problems, and ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective manner

Flexibility and willingness to learn company procedures, and ability to try new, improved techniques
