The Operations and Maintenance Division of the Department of Land Use and Transportation is currently hiring for a Principal Engineer. This group's primary responsibilities include: maintaining and repairing roads, bridges and drainage ways; tending to roadside vegetation; and overseeing private construction activities that occur with the public right-of-way.
As the Principal Engineer, you will work independently under the general supervision of the Division Manager to provide technical and engineering oversight for the Division's road and bridge maintenance activities. This includes, but is not limited to, working closely with maintenance crews, engineers, inspectors, and technicians, planners, elected officials, and the general public. You will coordinate work, projects, and initiatives that involve other jurisdictions, agencies, and work groups both internal and external to Washington County. This position provides policy coordination and development within the County by working collaboratively with other divisions and work groups to establish sustainable and practical approaches to maintenance activities associated with transportation infrastructure projects.
Successful candidates will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to communicate effectively with the full spectrum of internal and external customers including technical and non-technical personnel. In addition, you should have excellent reading comprehension with an ability to interpret written and graphical information as it relates to transportation projects and infrastructure. Ideally, you will also be competent with modern software programs associated with word processing, spreadsheets, scheduling, presentations, databases and other office productivity tools. This role supervises professional, technical and administrative support staff, so the supervisory skills of the successful candidate must include positive influences such as team building, collaboration, and motivation.
Education and Experience
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- A Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering, or closely related engineering field; AND
- Eight (8) years of increasingly responsible experience in civil engineering theory, principals, and methods, and/or experience in municipal engineering design, construction, and contract management, which includes a minimum of two (2) years lead or supervisory experience.
