Environmental Associate II (Coastal Scientist)

Michael Baker International’s civil engineering professionals manage and staff active projects in over 40 countries on five continents. DESCRIPTION

Michael Baker International has an exciting opportunity for a Environmental Associate II (Coastal Scientist) to join our Hamilton, NJ office. The successful candidate will become part of a high performing team that provides clients with multi-disciplinary engineering and science-based solutions to coastal management challenges including coastal flood risk (vulnerability assessments) and dredged material management. Responsibilities include leading and supporting the technical execution of projects within the Northeast Region while collaborating with our National Coastal Practice.

Perform coastal flood hazard analysis and mapping with respect to both present day and future conditions.

Support regional dredged material management and coastal restoration efforts including wetland restoration.

Conduct small- and large-scale climate change vulnerability assessments related to coastal hazards for a wide array of clients from both public and private sectors.

Manage, process, and analyze large geospatial datasets using an ESRI platform.

Provide technical support to staff locally and across the national Coastal Practice.

Produce written documentation via reports and memos of study methodology and results and provides recommendations based on findings.

Navigate the intersection of flood risk mitigation and the economic, social and policy challenges that accompany these risks.

Communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders to increase flood risk awareness and support resiliency planning through written, verbal, and visual means.

Actively participating in the development of project work plans and being responsible for voicing recommendations for next steps or identifying issues with data or methods and proposing solutions.

Develop methodologies to analyze coastal flood vulnerability and mitigate flood hazards; developing plans to beneficially use dredged material; conducting coastal management analyses using Geographic Information Systems (GIS); and writing reports and memorandums for a variety of different audiences.

 

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree with a focus on coastal/ocean science or engineering, oceanography or related field; Master’s degree preferred.

4-6 years of experience with analysis of coastal processes including wave and surge modeling as well as sediment transport; implementing concepts of flood hazard analysis and coastal resiliency planning.

High level of proficiency using ESRI software, including ArcGIS 10x.

Experience programming in MATLAB and/or Python a plus.

Experience with stakeholder and community engagement a plus.

Knowledge of FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program and experience implementing FEMA’s coastal flood hazard analysis and mapping methodologies.

Knowledge of dredged material management best practices.

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Flexible working on technical projects within multidisciplinary teams.

Demonstrated history of technical leadership and independent success.

A passion for increasing our Nation’s flood risk resiliency.
