Ecologist

Atlanta GA

HNTB is currently seeking an Ecologist to be part of a growing team of environmental professionals in the HNTB Atlanta office. This candidate will demonstrate a strong foundation of ecological/biological/life sciences principles to analyze the potential effects infrastructure/transportation projects may have on the natural environment. A successful candidate will participate in an array of infrastructure/transportation projects ranging in complexity under direction/supervision of more senior Scientist. They assist in performing basic scientific field studies, technical documentation, and investigations at project sites.

 

Primary Focus Will Include:

Ability to conduct ecological studies and prepare documentation for inclusion in environmental documents; including Categorical Exclusions, Environmental Assessments, Environmental Impact Statements and other technical reports as needed to assess impacts.

Conduct specialized field assessments including but not limited to wetland and stream delineations, endangered species/habitat assessments and surveys, plant identification/tree surveys, and land use studies throughout the state of Georgia.

Management of data collection, including entering and analyzing field data.

Assist in the preparation of Section 404 permits under the Clean Water Act. Permits may include Individual, Nationwide, or Regional.

Assist in the preparation of Georgia EPD Stream Buffer Variance applications.

Conduct technical planning studies in a timely and efficient manner and present results in concise, well-written documents.

 

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

Bachelors degree in an environmental field of study (Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Fisheries, Wildlife or related field) plus 0-3 years of related experience, and preferably experience related to ecological field studies and the preparation of environmental documents including Ecology and NEPA.

The ideal candidate should be dependable and detail oriented, and able to identify, assess and solve problems in the field and work place.

Strong analytical and technical report writing skills.

Computer skills with windows based programs such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook as well as ArcGIS.

Organizational/time management skills.

Understanding of ecology/biology concepts.

Ability to work well with others from an array of different fields.

 

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

Under direction of more senior Scientist, follows clearly established data collection methods to assist in conducting research projects and surveys.

Supports research efforts by gathering basic information from government agencies and clients, reviewing maps, assisting in field investigations among other supporting activities.

Based on prescribed methodology, sets up test equipment at proposed construction site to obtain scientific data.

Using established prescribed templates, prepares written reports, maps and statements of geologic, hydrologic, biologic and/or other scientific findings at project site as it relates to the design and construction of projects.

Maintains administrative records, collections and files related to specific projects.

Keeps current with trends, literature and new developments in ecology and environmental science.

Assists team in the production of project deliverables.

Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Archeology, Anthropology or related field
