Fishery Policy Specialist

Position Description

Will work with NOAA Fisheries regional offices to identify national solutions to improve effectiveness of the Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) program under Magnuson Stevens Act (MSA). Identify and implement methods to advance habitat in the agency's ecosystem-based fisheries management policy and roadmap. Review and evaluate federal activities for compliance with the EFH statute of the MSA. Will coordinate with other NOAA line offices to review their federal actions and assess the potential effects of these actions to EFH. Develop a plan for ensuring the line offices actions align with the EFH provisions of the MSA. Will assist in making policy, developing guidance, and tracking performance to inform national level decision-making. Participate in regional fishery management council meetings and workshops held by Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to advance strategic habitat priorities.

 

Required Skills

2 years of specialized experience directly related to the position. Must have knowledge of the principles of coastal and marine habitat conservation and fisheries management. Practical experience applying natural resource policies and regulations, preferably in coastal and marine environments. Knowledge of the federal fishery management process, including habitat provisions in the Magnuson Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA).

Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks. Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

 

Must be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility.

 

Education

BS in environmental management, policy, science, related field or equivalent. MS preferred.
