CSS, a professional and technical services provider to government and commercial clients, seeks an Environmental Scientist.
The Environmental Scientist will be responsible for inspecting waste collection points in NIH laboratories and will have experience evaluating processes and identifying waste streams, properly collecting hazardous wastes, and ensuring compliance with RCRA and other environmental regulations. The scientist will provide feedback to researchers regarding the waste stream collection requirements. The Environmental Scientist will be familiar with chemical segregation including placing chemical wastes into temporary storage for offsite shipment. The scientist with collect, and analyze data obtained from inspections and suggest tools to increase compliance and or improve statistical outcomes. The Environmental Scientist’s understanding of applicable environmental regulations will be such that he/she will perform compliance inspections of waste accumulation areas and provide follow-up reports to the NIH. The person will perform an inspection of the clients’ spill control centers to ensure compliance with the NIH requirements.
Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline that qualifies them to evaluate hazards associated with chemicals and chemical wastes. Examples include: Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Biology, Environmental Science, etc. Must have 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification with recurrent training. The individual must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently. They must be able to pass a background check, allowing them to obtain an HHS site badge. Individual must have a valid driver’s license.
A working knowledge of environmental regulations (e.g. RCRA, CWA, CAA, EPCRA, NEPA, etc.) is desired. Knowledge of high hazard materials management/assessment and cylinder handling is desired. Must be in good physical condition in order to inspect waste areas throughout the NIH campus. Excellent skill necessary to effectively communicate with the laboratory staff and client personnel. Working knowledge or Microsoft Office suite software.
