YMCA Camp Orkila seeks Full-time, Year Round Site Director for Outdoor Environmental Education
Camp Orkila is situated on the north side of Orcas Island-part of the San Juan Islands in the Salish Sea-and is accessible by ferry from Anacortes, 75 miles north of Seattle. Orkila offers over 285 acres of forest, grassland, marine and fresh water ecosystems, as well as, a small salmon hatchery, a marine education center, many challenge course elements and a working organic garden. YMCA Camp Orkila serves over 7,000 guests annually within our OEE program, serving schools from all over Western Washington & beyond. Camp Orkila happily serves a diverse range of school groups and works hard to fundraise scholarship money so that cost is no barrier for those that wish to attend. The Site Director is responsible for hiring, training, supervising and mentoring up to 50 seasonal staff. We offer OEE programming from March-June and September-October. This position ensures that excellent customer service and an overall quality experience are provided for each group that visits camp. The Site Director actively runs camp operations including bus driving, directing meals, orchestrating camp cleaning and managing emergency situations. This person is a member of the Orkila management team and works with other on-site managers to ensure the successful operation of all camp programming. In the summer, the site director manages Day Camp staff and programming as well as supports in overnight camper transporation. In the winter this position plays a large part in staff recruitment, curriculum development and annual campaign fundraising.
Additional Responsibilities include maintaining current partnerships within the local community and management of both the organic garden and marine center.
Requirements & Qualifications: The ideal Director is familiar with Outdoor Education Programming, has an undergraduate degree, and 2 years of relevent experience. Applicants must demonstrate strong organizational and management skills. Experience with Microsoft Office is required. Must have the ability to obtain a CDL and drive buses. The ideal applicant has a passion for the outdoors, experience with BEETLES and SEL curriculum and a high level of cultural competency to ensure quality and culturally appropriate programs are delivered to the diverse groups we serve. Applicants should also enjoy working with children, be a team player, have a sense of humor, possess the ability to think creatively, and have a strong work ethic.
Housing, Health Benefits, and YMCA Retirment contributions (12% added automatically from the YMCA) are offered in addition to salary.
Start date for this position is January 6th, 2020 (however flexible)
