Center Manager/Educator

Cranbury NJ

Job Classification: Year round – Variable Hours Seasonally:

April 1 – August 31, Full-time, 40 hours per week

September 1 – March 31, Part time, 24 hours per week.

 

Job Description: The Center Manager/Educator has duties primarily in the education branch of NJ Audubon and manages the day to day administrative and educational operations at the Plainsboro Preserve including managing the NJ Audubon’s Center’s program calendar, scheduling, hiring and training part-time teacher naturalists and interfacing with the public. NJ Audubon and Plainsboro Township share the operations of Plainsboro Preserve on a seasonal basis. This person will conduct seasonal programs including summer camp, school and scout programming in spring, and additional programming as needed during the rest of the year.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manage the administrative operations on a seasonal basis

Manage all aspects of NJ Audubon’s educational programming at the Preserve including the Center’s program calendar, program registration and scheduling. programs

Conduct, plan and develop (as applicable) natural history programs for children and adults including summer camps

Work with the Vice President of Education to hire and supervise seasonal education staff to conduct programs including school, scout and summer camp

Maintain lesson plans, educational materials and all other related programming information as required

Coordinate and manage the Plainsboro volunteers (seasonal)

Oversee in the care, feeding, and wellbeing of live animals that are presented for educational purposes

Work collaboratively with the Township of Plainsboro and their Parks and Recreation staff as part of a shared operations team

Strive to increase NJ Audubon membership base

 

Other

Prepare written reports, proposals and plans as required.

Attend center, department and NJA meetings

Participate with staff to adopt a “team” approach towards daily operations at the assigned center

Assume additional responsibilities as requested

 

Qualifications/Knowledge and Skills

A. or B.S. in the sciences or education preferred

Demonstrated ability to organize and manage a nature center or similar type of educational facility

Demonstrated knowledge of New Jersey’s natural and built environments; knowledge of environmental and conservation issues a plus

Prior experience working with young children in an outdoor setting

Demonstrated experience in management/supervisory positions and coordinating volunteers

Excellent computer skills – Microsoft Office and Social Media Skills to fulfill job requirements

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Excellent organizational, time and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, shifting priorities and meet deadlines

Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to relate to and motivate a diverse range of people, exercise cultural competence and inclusion, and accept direction and constructive criticism

Motivated self-starter with capacity to work productively in a team setting with the ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude

Strong professionalism and work ethic with the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality

Flexibility to adjust hours to meet deadlines and special needs of the sanctuary and the Organization

Must have the physical capacity to walk throughout the land and buildings of the sanctuary, able to move materials and to lift 50 lbs. and operate mechanical equipment as needed

Participate in an orientation/training session

Valid First Aid, CPR, and other public safety certification appropriate for the activities at the site

Obtain a satisfactory background check

Must have a reliable car and valid driver’s license and be able to operate a vehicle in NJ.

 

Start Date: February 15, 2020

Salary: Commensurate with experience
