Painted Oak Nature School
The mission of Painted Oak Nature School is to be a nurturing community of learners that values kindness, cooperation, imagination, and respect for all living things. We cultivate habits that instill confidence, capability, and self-reliance. Through daily interactions with the environment, out school promotes a holistic nature-based education for preschoolers, grade schoolers, and their families that foster deep connections with the natural world and to each other.
The position of Summer Naturalist will provide programming, logistics, and support for our Summer Forest School. This class meets in weekly sessions, Monday – Friday, for 5 consecutive weeks in the summer. The class is held entirely outdoors from 9am – 12pm for children ages 3 years – 7 years old. Enrollment of the class is capped at 10 children, led by 2 teachers. Children may enroll in one week or more. Minimum Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have experience in offering youth environmental education programming, developing creative curriculum focused around local flora and fauna and stewardship, be adaptable to unexpected program changes, the ability to maintain a positive attitude while supporting emergent learning in an outdoor setting in all weather conditions, and demonstrate confidence and competence in regard to risky play experiences for young children. Instructor must also be able to lift objects weighing up to 25 lbs. on occasion, feel comfortable standing for extended periods of time, be able to hike up to 5 miles, and be first aid/CPR trained.
Summer season, 2020: The applicant must be consistently available Monday – Friday mornings (9am-12pm) for weekly programming. Seeking applicants to co-teach one or more weeks of Summer Forest School. Week One begins July 6. Week Five ends August 7.
Compensation: $450 per week
Job Duration: Temporary with potential to continue with the organization in the Fall running similar programming.
