The Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership is a transformative learning community on Hurricane Island in Penobscot Bay, Maine. Our mission is to integrate science education, applied research, and leadership development through year-round educational programs and a seasonal, environmentallysustainable island community. Through experiential education programs and research opportunities in STEM disciplines we aim to excite people about doing science and about being leaders in the next wave of scientific discovery and environmental conservation.
The Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership (HICSL) Educators will work closely with the Director of Education and the Education Manager to help implement delivery of HICSL’s hands-on, experiential science education programs to (primarily) middle and high school students attending the various programs on Hurricane Island.
Educators are additionally expected to be integrated into the day-to-day operations of the island and help HICSL maintain our collaborative and intentional community.
• Collaborate with school teachers, program leaders, and HICSL staff to design and deliver holistic learning opportunities that align with Hurricane Island teaching philosophies, program goals, and student needs, including, but not limited to:
o Facilitating place-based, student driven learning experiences within a culturally responsive, inclusive learning community;
o Creating and leading evening programs with student participants;
o Managing group dynamics, leading team building exercises/games, andfacilitating participant comfort in outdoor settings.
• Assume primary responsibility for student care and wellness including, but not limited to:
o Overnight supervision and overnight on-call duties as necessary;
o Managing student physical, social, and emotional safety in outdoor settings;
o Safeguarding student health needs and confidentiality according to existing medical records and emergent conditions;
• Mentor an undergraduate Teaching Intern including, but not limited to:
o Assisting in goal setting and accountability;
o Providing feedback on lesson plans and delivery;
o Supporting a progressive assumption of responsibility by the Intern up to full lesson ownership and co-teaching.
• Maintain a growth mindset and participate in program improvement by
o Ensuring delivery of all HICSL evaluation instruments to program participants and consistently integrating feedback from evaluations into practice;
o Participating in weekly reflections on best practices in teaching and learning with other education staff members;
o Documenting lesson plans, program schedules, and program notes within established formats and with an eye to future replicability and improvement.
• Participate as a full member of HICSL’s intentional community, including:
o Following and enforcing campus policies and community expectations;
o Welcoming visitors to the island and communicating about HICSL’s mission and work;
o Participating in community tasks including daily and weekly chores; and performing other duties relating to the organization’s goals and mission as required.
o Assisting with implementation of HICSL and student-led field research projects.
A successful candidate must possess these Essential Qualifications:
• Demonstrated experience and enthusiasm for teaching and leading experiential programs for youth (preferably middle and high school age);
• Experience with facilitating student driven projects, preferably within a place-based context;
• A growth mindset including a willingness to be coached and openness to feedback;
• Commitment to equity and inclusion within our community and participation in a culture of continual learning around equity and inclusion work;
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills;
• Demonstrated initiative to identify and complete projects and work independently or as part of a team with minimal supervision;
• Ability and willingness to:
o work and live in a remote island community with rustic and off-the-grid accommodations where all staff share living and work spaces;
o work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed;
o perform physically challenging work in the outdoors and in all weather conditions on uneven terrain while monitoring and maintaining student safety;
• Current Wilderness First Responder and CPR certification or be willing to complete training prior to beginning work with students (course offered on Hurricane Island in April 2020);
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in science, education, environmental, multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary studies, or any related field; and
• U.S. Citizen or non-citizen permanent resident.
Preferred additional qualifications include:
• Previous experience conducting ecological field research and/or mentoring student driven research;
• Working experience with racial and ethnic minority groups, English language learners, urban youth, low-income communities, immigrant communities, LGBTQ+ communities, people with special needs, and other groups that are underrepresented in the field of environmental education;
• Involvement in community service projects, leadership, and social and environmental justice;
• Experience developing and assessing curriculum; and,
• Additional relevant certifications (e.g., climbing, boating, lifeguarding, etc.).
This is a paid, contracted position without benefits. Employees receive full room and board on Hurricane Island for the entirety of their contracted employment. All wages are commensurate with experience.
