National Great Rivers Research and Education Center is seeking an Environmental Educator.


Purpose of Position

Work with the Director of Environmental Education, NGRREC scientists and education team to plan, develop, deliver, and evaluate National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC) educational programs relating to: aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems; river and floodplain ecology and management; watershed ecology and management; population and community ecology of riverine and floodplain biota; outdoor recreation and eco-tourism opportunities; economics of river communities and river resources; and public attitudes or social issues related to the management of large rivers and their watersheds. Programs are directed toward all age groups. Assist with other NGRREC and L&C programs as determined by the Director of Environmental Education and environmental education program team.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following are duties that are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.

• Plan and deliver NGRREC environmental education programs to multiple audiences and stakeholders

• Identify specific strategies to reach target groups including, but not limited to schools, the general public, home and landowners, retailers, businesses and tourism entities

• Network, form partnerships and/or collaborate with local community, regional, state and national organizations, groups and cultural institutions to assess environmental education needs and develop programs to address those needs

• Work with school districts and teachers to integrate environmental issues and materials into their existing activities and curricula

• Work with scientists and researchers to develop scientifically-based and relevant education programming

• Assist with the following programs coordinated and delivered by NGRREC: RiverWatch, Illinois Project Water Education for Teachers (WET), the Swarovski Waterschool USA Mississippi River

• Write grants to support NGRREC programming

• Cultivate and solicit corporate sponsors to fund educational programming and events

• Develop informational and promotional materials such as newsletters, brochures, etc., regarding environmental issues and program activities

• Represent NGRREC at conferences and events

• Maintain content for NGRREC website pages related to programming areas

• Maintain a library of resource materials

• Assist in development and execution of a strategic plan for the program


Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Training, Experience, Skills and Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

• Highly motivated, creative, organized, experienced individual who wants to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

• BA or BS in biology, education, environmental science or other related fields required. MS preferred

• Experience in community-based outreach education with at least one to three years teaching in formal or non-formal environment is highly desired. Experience with a broad range of ages desirable

• Excellent writing, presentation, and public relations skills

• Proven grant writing and fundraising experience

• Strong organizational and time management skills

• Independent judgment in development, implementation and evaluation of programs and plans

• Frequent travel to various greater St. Louis area locations and throughout the state, including the transport of materials and equipment

• Willing to work weekends and evenings as needed

• Familiarity with National and Illinois Learning Standards is desired

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and willingness to learn new computer applications

• Ability to lift 25 pounds


Preferred Qualifications

Work Hours Monday-Friday, 8:00-4:30 , Some Evenings , Some Weekends
