Environmental Educator

Montour Falls NY

Cornell Cooperative Extension is a collaboration among Cornell University, the United States Department of Agriculture, the State of New York, and the residents of New York State.

The Environmental Educator will help residents and local organizations in the Village of Montour Falls learn about ways to procure nutritious food in an environmentally conscious manner, compost, and minimize food waste. The educator will also work with community partners, including local non-profits and businesses, to reach diverse groups of residents, with a focus on those with limited incomes and/or elderly populations. The educator will, in conjunction with partners, use a variety of creative options to provide useful and relevant information to audiences, including doing outreach at community events; presenting before large groups in different settings; speaking with people one-on-one over the phone or in person; coordinating with food waste generators in providing accurate information on the programs, etc. This position will also assist with training, engaging and coordinating the work of volunteers.

 

Required Qualifications:

Master’s Degree plus experience relevant to the role of the position. Bachelor’s Degree plus 4 years transferable relevant evidence-based research experience may substitute.

Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in English.

Ability to meet frequent travel requirements associated with this position.

Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

Proficiency in the use of basic modern electronic technology (e.g., video, audio, computers, texting, Microsoft Office Programs, etc.).

Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work effectively with elected officials, advisory boards, committees, community, residents, groups, and funding partners.

Ability to plan, organize, implement and present effective and relevant educational lessons to target audiences in group settings, and work with diverse audiences of all ages.

Ability to initiate, plan, organize, implement, teach, and evaluate informal educational programs.

Commitment to working in limited income neighborhoods with diverse program participants and the community based agencies that serve them.

Experience and comfort level with logic models.

Comfortable engaging partners and collaborators in working toward long range goals

Ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels using traditional educational tools and methods.

Ability to relate effectively to co-workers, advisors, community and professional leaders.

Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor.

Ability to work independently and to effectively participate in professional team efforts

Ability to work in a typical office environment which may include lifting, moving, and/or transporting office supplies, work related materials, and equipment with or without accommodation. Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with municipal recycling or food scrap composting programs

 

Position Details:

This is a part time, non-exempt position. Compensation paid at the rate of $17 per hour/year. Excellent benefits, based on eligibility, including:
