Central Park Conservancy is seeking an Associate Director of Interpretation & Programs.
The Associate Director in the Visitor Experience Department is responsible for the leadership, program management, and administration of public programs and is part of a team that manages Visitor Experience as a whole.
Working under the general direction of the Director of Visitor Experience, the Associate Director is primarily responsible for the overall management of public programs. It is expected that the Associate Director will work in collaboration across departments and with the other Park managers to perform their primary tasks.
Hire, supervise and perform annual performance reviews of all employees and ensure supervision and performance measurements are aligned with CPC standards; oversee team of seasonal intern(s) and regular volunteers
· Lead, coach, and develop employees and volunteers using established performance management techniques to ensure engagement and productivity
· Delegate and holds subordinates responsible for satisfactory performance of assignments
· Plan, direct, and coordinate through subordinate-level managers, department’s work plan; meets with management and staff to identify and resolve problems
· Working with the Director of Visitor Experience, implement training programs for program facilitation, safety, and work techniques that are current with professional standards and administered at appropriate intervals; keeps current on safety rules, procedures, and industry trends; review on an annual basis
· Coordinates with outside organizations, developing strategic partnerships, and work with NYC Parks (or other City Agencies) as necessary
· Collaborate with other managers in other departments to achieve set work plan goals
· Collaborate across the organization to develop core interpretive content for dissemination in a variety of forms, increasing accessibility to and understanding of the Park’s assets
· Coordinate and communicate with other departments at CPC and disseminate pertinent information to employees
· Keeps Director of Visitor Experience informed of all matters related to public programs and the Park as a whole; ensure any issues are addressed appropriately and timely
Participate in the strategic planning and growth of interpretation and programs that directly support the goals and mission of the Conservancy and enhances the overall visitor experience in the Park
· Create programming agenda and coordinate priorities and work load with other department Associate Directors to ensure all Visitor Experience work is achieved throughout the Park
· Working with Director of Visitor Experience and other Managers, develop an annual budget and monitor expenses throughout the fiscal year; plan for large expenditure purchases if necessary
· Establish programmatic performance indicators and continually monitor and assess work against established indicators and work processes
· Develop and document all procedures relevant to program operations
· Ensure compliance of organizational standards of methods and practices, safety and other established requirements, including the proper handling of cash
· Use computer-based management systems for budget control, scheduling, timekeeping, and reporting.
· Oversee public program and tour activities, along with their associated interpretive resources, throughout the Park
· As appropriate, shape and present lectures, tours, and other programming or collaborate with other staff to do so
· Make all purchase requests and provide supporting documentation justifying requests as necessary
· Ensure proper tracking of statistics and use of systems
· Establish inventory control system and ensure proper care of all programming supplies, ensuring all upkeep schedules are strictly adhered
· Prepare reports and proposals to supervisors and funders as requested/required
· Perform related work as assigned
1. Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college in a related field; 10 years of increasingly responsible experience in the field of interpretation, public programming, community engagement, or work of a similar nature including a minimum of 8 years in the management and supervision of others; or
2. Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” above. However all candidates must possess the 8 years of management and supervision of others
3. Valid Drivers’ License that must be maintained for duration of employment
4. Possess a fundamental understanding and knowledge of Visitor Experience management using modern practices; experience in high-visitation settings is desirable.

2. Ability to engage in critical thinking skills that allow for prioritizing issues, coordinating multiple projects and problem solve
3. Ability to interact with the public in a courteous, diplomatic, and professional manner at all times
4. Ability to serve as a collaborative and flexible part of a team
5. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, e-mail, and Internet applications; experience with point of sale and/or ticketing systems and/or ability to quickly learn new systems
6. Ability to work weekends, evenings, holidays and/or outdoors as needed
7. Ability to lift 30 lbs. and perform work that requires long periods of standing, walking to various locations throughout the Park as needed, and driving
