Location: Lorrimer Sanctuary, Franklin Lakes, NJ
Reports To: Sanctuary Director
Job Classification: Teacher Naturalist (hourly) approximately 8 hours per week
The Teacher Naturalist has duties in the education branch of the NJ Audubon mission and provides environmental education programs to schools, interested groups and the public. The Teacher Naturalist takes an active role in promoting New Jersey Audubon as a membership-based conservation organization.
Plan and conduct environmental education programs for schools, special interest groups, nature camps, general public and family programs.
Maintain lesson plans, educational materials and all other related programming information.
Play a key role in developing a suite of programming at Lorrimer Sanctuary to be offered yearly.
Work with the Sanctuary Director to create fundraising events and educational events for members and the public.
Assist with program preparation and clean-up and with care and handling of program materials and equipment.
Occasionally help with seasonal property maintenance of the sanctuary.
Participate with Center staff and volunteers to adopt a “team” approach towards daily operations at the Center.
Assume additional responsibilities as required.
Satisfactorily complete Center-specific programmatic training.
Obtain and maintain certification for First Aid, CPR, and other public safety certification appropriate for the activities at the site.
Obtain a satisfactory background check.
Participate in ongoing training as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
A. or B.S. in the sciences or education preferred.
Two to three years in the Environmental Education field, or comparable experience.
Excellent Computer Skills – Microsoft Office
Excellent written and oral communication skills, and knowledge of NJ Audubon and the natural world helpful.
Excellent organizational, time and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, shifting priorities and meet deadlines.
Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to relate to and motivate a diverse range of people, exercise cultural competence and inclusion, and accept direction and constructive feedback.
Motivated self-starter able to work independently in the execution of his or her responsibilities while collaborating with other staff and organizations with the ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude.
Strong professionalism and work ethic with the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
Must be flexible to adjust hours to meet deadlines and needs of the organization, including availability to work occasional evenings.
Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle in NJ.
Ability to walk on uneven surfaces as needed for outdoors events and lift up to 50 lbs.
