Transportation and Energy Policy Advocate

The North Carolina Justice Center is seeking a full-time Transportation and Energy Policy Advocate to support the Consumer and Energy Project of the NC Justice Center. They will provide policy analysis and advocacy related to transportation electrification, energy efficiency, clean energy, utility policy, and other energy and housing-related topics. One area of focus for this position will be on transportation topics, including an equitable transition to electrified transportation, transportation-related air pollution, infrastructure strategies, mass transit, alternate forms of transportation such as biking and ride-sharing programs, barriers to electric vehicle ownership, and electrification of public transit, school buses, freight, and delivery fleets. This position will also include advocacy on our broader energy policy areas related to promoting affordable, safe housing, energy efficiency, and renewable energy in NC, including energy insecurity, energy efficiency, weatherization, urgent repair, and payment assistance funding and programs. The Transportation and Energy Policy Advocate will serve as a resource for advocates and partners across the state, coordinate campaigns related to these issue areas, coalition-building, media outreach, research, and writing.

· Conduct policy research and evaluate effective strategies for promoting electrification of transportation in NC that benefits low-income communities.

· Develop and maintain expertise on transportation and energy policy issues that impact low-income individuals and communities; remain current on advancements in energy-related technology, state and local policy developments, and changing federal policy landscape.

· Monitor and advocate in the NC General Assembly on legislation related to transportation and energy policies that impact low-income individuals and communities.

· Meet with government officials and stakeholders and attend and testify at legislative or public agency meetings.

· In coordination with our Communications team, grow awareness and understanding of key transportation and energy issues via messaging, storytelling, traditional media (press releases, media alerts, press events), email campaigns, social media, website content, newsletters, and action alerts.

· Participate in and lead a diverse coalition of advocates, including transportation advocates, partners from community-based organizations, and environmental and environmental justice organizations.

· Build and maintain relationships with partner organizations, community members, elected officials, decision-makers, allies, stakeholders, and others.

· Engage in advocacy and work to reduce energy insecurity in communities of color and low-income communities by improving energy efficiency, weatherization, and urgent repair programs to renters in multifamily and single-family homes and eligible single-family homeowners to increase the availability of LIEAP and CIP and other related programs.

· Participating in and or monitoring Duke Energy / Utility Commission rate filings and participating in working groups and collaboratives.

· Work collaboratively with other Justice Center projects and advocates to coordinate cross-project advocacy where appropriate.

Qualifications:

We’re looking for someone with a Masters’ Degree in Environmental Science, Public Policy, Planning, Law degree, or equivalent experience in transportation or other energy policy areas. Candidates must have a minimum of two years of advocacy experience in transportation, energy, sustainable development, environmental, or other similar policy issues. A successful candidate will have strong communication skills, including writing, speaking, and listening to a wide range of audiences, including state officials and community members. Candidates must have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, the ability to work on multiple projects independently and with others, and the ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure. They will have the interpersonal skills necessary to work effectively with various colleagues, funders, and state and federal officials, as well as enthusiasm for collaboration and learning from colleagues. Policy Director

Friends of the Inyo, a 501(c)(3) conservation nonprofit, is looking to hire a Policy Director. The right candidate will lead and provide strategic direction for Friends of the Inyo’s policy programs to help fulfill our mission “To protect and care for the public lands of the Eastern Sierra,” working to ensure the health and vibrancy of the ecosystems of public lands throughout California’s Inyo and Mono Counties.

The position reports directly to the Executive Director. The Policy Director is a permanent position that could be part- or full-time and could be remote, but frequent travel to California’s Eastern Sierra is required.

Legislative Affairs Manager

RESPONSIBILITIES

Serve as one of EnviroVoters’ main liaisons with the legislature.
Make recommendations and provide valued input on positions that EnviroVoters should take on legislation and policy issues.
Work with the Senior Legislative Manager to develop and implement EnviroVoters’ legislative accountability campaigns and strategy.
Work with the legislative team to strategically plan and budget to achieve annual goals.
Work with the EnviroVoters Communications and Organizing teams to develop and implement strategies that amplify our efforts to hold elected leaders accountable, advocate for priority policies, apply public pressure to advance a climate justice agenda, and build public support through socializing policy solutions with voters.
Work with the Senior Legislative Manager to manage the legislative affairs team to ensure all EnviroVoters and EnviroVoters Education Fund legislative and policy efforts are consistently aligned and are working to meet the organizations’ strategic direction.
Manage the legislative team to effectively and strategically advance the organization’s legislative and policy agenda and to coordinate coalitions and networks that EnviroVoters’ participates in or facilitates.
Assist in the production of the annual EnviroVoters Scorecard to provide voters with an invaluable tool to understand California Legislator’s voting records on climate and environmental legislation and to hold elected leaders accountable.
Provide timely and relevant updates to the EnviroVoters Program Committee, prepare materials, and participate in committee meetings.
Represent the organization in an array of coalitions, networks, and groups including the administration and elected officials, the nonprofit community, political community, funders, and the press as needed.
Occasionally serve as a spokesperson for the organization.
Assist in writing communications to the organization’s membership to keep our supporters and members updated on important climate legislation and opportunities for the public to engage.
Support the implementation of the EnviroVoters Education Fund Green California Program, a network of over 100 environmental, environmental justice, and health organizations who work together to pass climate and environmental policy priorities, which includes an annual Advocacy Day event which is a powerful event where advocates come together to advocate for collective priority legislation.
Partner with other staff to facilitate internal briefings on complex issues within the environmental community.

Research Assistant/Associate, Conservation Policy

American Progress has an immediate opening in its Energy and Environment department for a Research Assistant or Associate on the Conservation Policy team. This position will focus on conservation, natural climate solutions, agriculture, and/or energy policy, including moving toward pollution-free public lands and ocean as well as ensuring a just transition for communities.

Director, International Policy

The Director, International Policy leads the development and implementation of IFAW’s strategy for engagement with prioritized Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) and other international treaties, conventions, agreements, and institutions. These include the UN biodiversity and Rio conventions (CBD, CITES, CMS, UNFCCC, UNCCD) and the International Whaling Commission (IWC), as well as UN institutions such as UN Environment, UN Division on Oceans and Law of the Sea (DOALOS), and the UN General Assembly and High-Level Political Forum as necessary, and the World Conservation Union (IUCN). Other relevant agreements and institutions may also be included under the Director, International Policy’s management remit (for example, UNESCO/World Heritage Convention and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

By identifying opportunities for policy change at MEAs and other relevant agreements and institutions that align with IFAW’s Institutional Strategic Plan, the Director, International Policy, works in close collaboration with the Executive Management Team, Deputy Vice Presidents, Program Directors and Country/Regional Directors, to guide and oversee the delivery of priority IFAW campaigns and projects directly related to these MEAs, international agreements and institutions.

The Director, International Policy leads IFAW’s direct engagement with Secretariats, governing and advisory bodies to relevant MEAs, international agreements and institutions and provides leadership and direction to Program teams, country/regional campaigners, and other relevant staff in their engagement with Parties to relevant agreements and institutions, including mentoring, supporting, and training staff as required.

Role and Responsibilities

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Conduct new employee training and orientation for litigation assistants and paralegals.
Partner with the Managing Attorney and/or other staff to evolve the effectiveness of litigation support and institute and implement best practices in the face of changing technology, norms, and rules.
Assist litigation assistants in career advancement by identifying and encouraging appropriate training and professional development opportunities and creating development plans.

Qualifications:

College degree preferred.
Three plus years of experience in a related litigation position.
Paralegal certification or equal mastery of skills.
Expert user of software and other technology used to support litigation and program work, including Microsoft Word, Adobe PDF, and PACER/ECF.
In-depth understanding of legal practice relevant to our work, including the rules and procedures in venues where office or program practices, primarily federal courts and in particular the federal courts located in the District of Columbia.
Ability to work independently to identify, analyze, and complete tasks.
Excellent organizational, problem-solving skills, and verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage complex information.
Ability to handle a varied workload and prioritize as needed.

Policy Manager

The American Forest Foundation seeks a highly motivated candidate to assist the AFF Policy Team in advancing forest carbon incentives and policies at the state and federal level. In the U.S., forests occupy more than 750 million acres and serve as the nation’s largest terrestrial carbon sink, capturing carbon and storing it in trees as well as in the forest products that you use every day. The Policy Manager will work with the Policy Team and consultants on advancing AFF policy priorities at the state and federal level. Some specifics about the job
The Policy Manager will be responsible for ensuring policy supports AFF’s Family Forest Carbon Program and AFF’s regional conservation work. You will provide analytical support and research on specific issues related to carbon, taxation, climate policy, natural climate solutions, and forests as an integral role in the carbon cycle. Track federal policies that focus on climate mitigation goals, wildfire risk reduction, disaster recovery, markets for wood products, and more. You will work alongside an incredible team to advance both federal and state government policy and funding that empowers family forest owners to act on issues like climate change, biodiversity protection, and wildfire risk reduction. Support regional conservation work by engaging in policy that relates to incentive-based programs, proactive tax policies, and forest product markets. Develop and cultivate relationships with key congressional targets, and government agencies relevant to above noted policy issues. Attend meetings and briefings on behalf of the Executive Vice President as assigned and provides summaries, alerting the EVP of important issues and deadlines. This also includes providing talking points to the CEO, EVP, VPs, and Directors when needed. Oversee all logistics for fly-ins and field tours, in partnership with Policy coordinator. Helps facilitate grass tops engagement and advocacy campaigns that help push decision makers. Through oral and written communication present findings to internal and external stakeholders. This also include participating in and presenting at conferences, events and webinars, and evaluating collaborative opportunities with external organizations. Develop fact sheets, policy memos, and other materials for Hill staff, that represent AFF policy goals and supports organization-wide initiatives. Strong ability to work and build relationships with partners that represent broad interests and engage in coalitions with key stakeholders

Your First Year
After your first year on AFF’s Policy team, you’ll have built an understanding, always with room for continuous learning, of the critical conservation issues that family forest owners can impact and how we can leverage government policy and funding tools to empower family forest owners to achieve even greater conservation impact that also meets their needs.

You will have built reliable, collaborative, trust-based relationships with your AFF colleagues, in addition to coalition partners, family forest owners, and key contacts in the Administration and on Capitol Hill.
You will have developed a nuanced understanding of AFF’s federal policy priorities, as well as the most effective legislative and regulatory pathways to achieving those priorities; you will also have the acumen to know when a change in advocacy strategy and/or tactics is necessary and how to best execute such a change.
You will have made progress toward advancing AFF’s current federal forest carbon policy goals, in addition to identifying and prioritizing additional opportunities for AFF to provide thought leadership, influence policy outcomes, and deliver positive results for family forest owners.

Staff Attorney

NEIWPCC is seeking collaborative, thoughtful and dedicated candidates for a full-time Staff Attorney (Program Manager) position within our established interstate water organization. This position would provide legal expertise on policy matters of significant importance, as well as independent advice and recommendations on a wide range of topics for senior management within the agency. This position requires knowledge and expertise in environmental law, experience writing and interpreting state and federal contracts, as well as the ability to provide expert and independent legal advice in both oral and written formats.

Supervisory, leadership, budget preparation, grant writing, and contract management experience desired.

This position is based at NEIWPCC’s Lowell, MA headquarters office. Duties will be performed largely in an office setting, but with a need for regional and national travel, for which a valid driver’s license and private means of transportation is required.
