Program Coordinator, Environmental Law

Lewis & Clark Law School’s environmental law program seeks a program coordinator to serve as its administrative support. The program coordinator reports to the Associate Dean and Associate Director of the program and will provide administrative support for a variety of degrees and programs, including JDs, Master’s, and LLM students, and logistical and planning support for various events of the program, including an annual forum, short courses, speakers, student events, and other related events throughout the year. The position also assists with marketing and program outreach.

This position is represented by the Lewis & Clark College Support Staff Association Local 4912 of the American Federation of LCCSSA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Administrative

Provides Administrative support for the Environmental Law Program.

Works closely with the Associate Dean and Assistant Director of the program on all aspects of the program

Serves as logistical coordinator for all events hosted by the program, including annual conferences, visitors, lectures, trainings.

Supports other aspects of the program such as fellowships and specific clerkships.

Monitors the program’s multiple budgets, prepares reports, assists with strategic planning, and works with the environmental faculty steering committee for the program.

Supports faculty and other events at the law school as needed.

Student Coordination

Provides support for multiple environmental degrees and certificates for JD, LLM (online and in-person), joint JD-LLM, and MSL students (online and in-person), including assisting with marketing/recruiting, communications, curriculum and registrations.

Responsible for accepting and processing applications for LLM and MSL students and for tracking registrations.

Responsible for creating and maintaining student files for LLM and MSL students.

Supports various fellowship, scholarship, and clerkship programs, including Environmental Law Fellows, Wyss Fellows, Diehl Fellows, and BPA student clerkships.

Serves as a secondary resource for potential and current students’ questions and inquiries.

Event Coordination and Marketing

Works with law school event staff to oversee logistical support for the program’s various events on and off campus, including conferences, lectures, faculty visits, off-site trainings for federal employees, student events, and special events.

May also be called upon to assist faculty and/or help with other law school events and projects.

Works with program leadership on updating all marketing materials, including degree and certificate details and event publicity in print and on Web, including updating program’s Web pages, creating online event registration pages, and assisting with outreach marketing efforts and communications (including assistance with program newsletter).

Data Analysis and Reporting

Prepares budget reports, prepares tuition projections for LLM and MSL students, and tracks progression towards degrees for LLM and MSL students.

Prepares curriculum reports, attends all environmental faculty committee meetings and prepares minutes.

Conducts research for various program projects (e.g, enrollment statistics), updates and tracks program annual work plan, prepares and updates task lists for all events and activities.

Maintains program files, maintains LLM and MSL student applications and files (electronically), sends task reminders for work plan progress and various other tasks related to keeping the program office and files organized, monitors the program’s multiple budgets.

In April of 2023, NWF, in partnership with the University of Maryland (UMD) and our Hub partners, were selected by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as one of 17 Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Centers (TCTACs), specifically for the Mid-Atlantic region – the Mid-Atlantic Thriving Communities Hub, which encompasses EPA’s designated Region III (Delaware, Washington, DC, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia).

Principal Duties (Major Areas of Responsibility)

Reporting to the EJHCR Director of Programs and is under the supervision of the TCTAC program manager, this position will assist with provision of direct EJ assistance and outreach and logistics with communities and in performing research and drafting materials on environmental justice issues in Region III.

The environmental justice coordinator will work with the TCTAC Program Manager (30%) to provide assistance in implementing our TCTAC program. This position will work closely with multiple partners, including community-based core HUB partners selected due to their experience and expertise in environmental and energy justice work, and will be responsible for the build out of resources, collaboration and coordination, data monitoring activities and preparing reports on the program’s success. Additionally, this position will work to ensure that all TCTAC programs, particularly Region III, processes, structures, and strategies are interconnected, effective, and aligned with our programmatic goals and grant deliverables.

In addition, to support our growing environmental justice portfolio, this position will also work with the EJHCR Program (70%). The EJ coordinator will support our ability to develop and maintain authentic partnerships with community leaders and organizations and will serve a vital role in our ability to work in collaboration with various leaders to uplift shared wins and priorities for both wildlife and people. The coordinator will provide support to environmental justice team leadership to ensure the Federation is able to engage with a broader set of constituents in an effort to connect federal and state policy with community needs.

Job Summary

The Paralegal – Environment and Sustainability position is responsible for providing a wide range of support services to the Vice President, Environment and Sustainability (E&S), enabling the VP to focus on more advanced responsibilities. This position also assists the wider, field-based E&S Department in the organization and functioning of various different systems and tasks. NJ Farm Bill Wildlife Biologist I or II

Overview: In partnership with the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife (NJDFW); this Farm Bill Wildlife Biologist will coordinate and implement wildlife-related conservation programs and provide technical assistance within the Northern bobwhite quail (NBWQ) focal landscape of New Jersey. The position location will be based in a USDA Service Center and provide service to multiple counties and Service Centers in southern New Jersey. Staff will work in joint capacity with partner agencies to promote, coordinate and implement conservation provisions of the Federal Farm Bill, with primary focus on the Working Lands For Wildlife Northern Bobwhite Grasslands and Savannas Framework. Conservation delivery may involve other relevant Farm Bill programs such as the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP), and the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP), as well as state level habitat programs and initiatives. General duties will include all aspects of wildlife habitat planning, contract coordination, conservation plan writing, site assessment/eligibility determination, program promotion/outreach, landowner technical assistance, monitoring, and reporting.

Specific Duties:

Provide technical assistance (wildlife habitat focus) and guidance to private landowners, government agencies, non-government organizations and other groups for USDA NRCS conservation programs. Training provided jointly by NRCS, NJDFW, and PF & QF.
Coordinate the implementation and application of wildlife programs within the Working Lands For Wildlife Northern Bobwhite Grasslands and Savannas Framework landscape in cooperation with partner agencies.
Complete conservation plans, job sheets, wildlife habitat evaluation guides (WHEG) and other required documentation for the conservation programs requiring biological expertise in cooperation with the listed partners.
Communicate program requirements, complete site visits to determine eligibility, and develop contract documents for applicants and participants of USDA-NRCS conservation programs and other local and state programs.
Review plans and specifications for feasibility for implementation under Farm Bill program contract rules, etc.
Conduct conservation program outreach including workshops, field days, demonstration events, and landowner mentor events.
Provide on-site landowner technical assistance for conservation practice implementation.
Conduct grassland bird and vegetation monitoring as part of the Northern Bobwhite Grasslands and Savannas Framework outcomes research.
Work with local QF chapters to assist with habitat program education and outreach and provide technical assistance for habitat projects.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

AZ Water Program Policy Specialist

The AZ Water Program Policy Specialist works closely with Arizona Water Program staff, Arizona’s Director of External Affairs and other Conservancy professionals to form a partner leverage strategy for Arizona to achieve objectives established through conservation area plans. Will provide specialized guidance in forming, maintaining, developing existing partnerships with scientific/research institutions, governments, community groups, NISP consortia, indigenous organizations, NGOs. Position helps to raise funds for overall functional initiatives and/or specific projects, by providing input for proposal writing, negotiating with bilateral and multilateral agencies, corporate business sector and cultivating donors, as needed.

A. Support Local and Regional Policy (approx. 50% of time)

Support water project work in Northern and Southern Arizona.
Engage with diverse groups of stakeholders including agricultural water users, elected officials, tribal governments, municipal and county employees, and state and federal agency employees. This may be through meetings that are convened and managed by Specialist, participation in meetings managed by others or through one-on-one meetings.
Provide direction and support in relationship management at the regional scale.
Provide policy guidance for project implementation based on direct knowledge or by seeking input from professional sources.
Develop tools such as policy statements and written reports for TNC or in collaboration with one or more partner or stakeholder.
Initiate, negotiate and formalize, with support from Arizona Operations staff, formal agreements such as Memorandums of understanding.

B. Support Statewide Policy (approx. 40% of time)

Supports fundraising efforts for overall Water Program initiatives and/or specific projects by providing input for proposal writing, negotiating with bilateral and multilateral agencies and the corporate business sector, and by cultivating donors as needed and collaborating closely with Arizona’s Development staff and Grants Specialist.
Develop and update annual water policy agenda for Arizona Water Program of The Nature Conservancy.
Manage relationships with state and federal based conservation and other interest groups that influence water policy.
Supports cross-cutting communication and coordination within TNC and with partners by convening in multi-party stakeholder meeting, attending meetings and direct communications. Document agreements through written meeting reports or other forms as appropriate.

In addition, the Research & Policy Coordinator should have:

Associate Attorney

Baykeeper is seeking an attorney to join our team working on high-impact legal advocacy and environmental enforcement. Baykeeper’s legal team works on a docket of 10-15 cases, using the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, California Fish and Game Code, the Public Trust Doctrine, and other state and federal laws, to achieve concrete legal justice for the Bay’s watershed and the surrounding communities that rely on clean water and healthy ecosystems.

The Associate Attorney will work collaboratively with our staff of scientists, attorneys, and our outside partners to strengthen water quality policies through advocacy and litigation. Specifically, the Associate Attorney will work on matters related to freshwater flows to protect the health of communities and ecosystems, restore native fish in the Bay and its watershed, and support our legal and investigation teams on industrial and municipal pollution enforcement, among other water quality issues.

Essential responsibilities include:

Support legal advocacy and litigation to improve freshwater flows into San Francisco Bay and protect water quality and fish for healthy fisheries and communities.
Support legal advocacy and litigation to strengthen and enforce water quality laws and regulations against industrial, municipal, and other polluters for a more resilient Bay and Bay Area communities.
Conduct legal research and policy analysis to support Baykeeper’s mission and fulfill program priorities.
Advocate in meetings and hearings before regulatory agencies and local officials.
Collaborate closely with science staff, work with the legal team (currently comprised of our Managing Attorney, two Staff Attorneys, and an experienced legal volunteer), and coordinate with outside counsel representing Baykeeper.
Assist communications and fundraising staff with requested information, as necessary.
Contribute to a cohesive and collegial Baykeeper team.

Preferred qualifications include:

At least three years of post-law school experience, including researching and developing cases, engaging in administrative advocacy, drafting briefs and comment letters, and/or working with technical experts and outside counsel on complex policy analysis.
Admission to the California Bar, or a willingness to apply for admission.
Knowledge of federal and state environmental laws, including Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts.
Interest in science and a desire to protect health of fish and communities who depend on clean water.
Strong communication skills and the ability to integrate technical and scientific information into legal and policy advocacy.
Willingness to attend meetings around the Bay Area, Stockton, and Sacramento, and conduct research in the field, including in inclement weather and occasionally outside of normal business hours.
Ability to set and meet internal and external deadlines under pressure.
Ability to exercise sound judgment, integrity, and maintain respect of others in stressful situations; tendency to approach work settings with a problem-solving mindset, grace, and a sense of humor.

Work Location

The Associate Attorney is primarily a remote work position, and the employee must live in the Bay Area or be willing to relocate at their own expense.

While working remotely, the employee must be online and focused on job duties during regular work hours, typically Monday-Friday 9am to 5pm, including availability for messages, phone calls, and online meetings throughout the day. Employee will be required to work at times in the Baykeeper office as needed for meetings, legal filings, or other in-person coordination. Baykeeper’s office is in downtown Oakland, convenient to 19th Street BART station and other public transit.

Physical Demands

The physical demands of this position include utilizing computer equipment, traveling to and actively participating in public meetings, verbal communications with partners, counsel, media representatives, and others both in person and by video and telephone, occasional travel by boat to conduct visual and sensory inspections on and around the Bay. Compensation, Benefits, and Values

This is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Managing Attorney. The salary range for new staff in this position is $60,000 to $75,000, depending on experience, with an expectation to work 40 hours per week (typically, Monday through Friday 9am – 5pm with occasional evenings and weekends).

Director, Environmental Policy

The Director of Environment Policy directs, develops and executes Illinois Farm Bureau (IFB) advocacy efforts regarding environmental policy affecting Illinois agriculture. Directs, develops and executes the organization’s environmental programs, communications and information. Oversees department staffing to ensure efficient operation of the function.

This position offers a hybrid work schedule and is based out of our corporate offices in Bloomington, IL.

How does a Director of Environmental Policy make an impact?

Fosters strategic alliances and positive relationships with various external entities to advocate on environmental policy issues, coordinate programs and strategies, and advance IFB priorities. May prepare and present testimony, respond to questions before legislative committees and/or represent IFB before various local, state or federal regulatory agencies, on various boards, committees or groups throughout the state, as assigned.
Collaborates with internal contacts to develop IFB positions, review and monitor the progress of proposed legislation and regulation, and effectively communicate key policies or issues within assigned area of responsibility.
Performs research, prepares reports, and provides information and counsel to the IAA Board of Directors, relevant committees and other entities, as requested. Serves on IAA committees as designated.
Serves as a member of the Governmental Affairs and Commodities leadership team, participating in the study, reporting, decision-making, budgeting, and planning activities of the Division.
Exercises professional leadership by keeping abreast of current trends, issues, developments, technology and opportunities within field of responsibility.
