Wetland/Rangeland Ecologist

The Wetland/Rangeland Ecologist supports the mission of the International Crane Foundation (ICF) by conducting crane habitat use, habitat management, and wetland research. With the Director of the Gulf Coast Programs, the incumbent will promote land conservation and implement best management practices for water conservation, wetland restoration, and climate change adaptation on the current and potential wintering grounds for Whooping Cranes. The incumbent will work collaboratively with many partners, including private landowners, coastal communities and businesses, government agencies, universities, and other conservation organizations, to advocate for land use policies and practices that jointly benefit people and wildlife, namely cranes. This work will advance our goal of achieving a resilient ecosystem and sustainable future for Whooping Cranes, other biodiversity, and all who depend on a healthy Texas coast environment today and in the future.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Expand the research and monitoring program in Texas:

Design, develop, and conduct research on Whooping Crane habitat use, changes in the vegetation community over time, and habitat management.
Communicate the results of research to partners, landowners, donors through various outlets.

Protect and manage coastal land to ensure a growing, sustainable population of Whooping Cranes:

Develop personal relationships with coastal landowners and guide them through a myriad of options to protect, maintain, and/or restore their land and water resources in accordance with their economic needs and vision for land conservation.
Assist partners and landowners with habitat management work such as prescribed fire implementation, well installation, brush management.
Support identification of current and planned locations of commercial and industrial sites within the Whooping Crane wintering range; support proactive steps early in the planning process to recommend alternative siting of development projects or mitigation of development impacts at suitable alternative wintering areas.
Serve as an active liaison among partners involved in land and water conservation projects in the wintering range of Whooping Cranes, updating partners periodically on progress (extent of land conserved, ecological benefits, new projects).
Maintain regular contact with federal and state agency leads to set priorities for Whooping Crane habitat conservation.
Guide conservation partners through acquisition, conservation easements, and management of coastal lands that ensure future habitat for Whooping Cranes as sea levels rise.

Ensure that adequate freshwater is available in the coastal bays and estuaries and on the landscape to sustain cranes, other wildlife, and livelihoods:

Advocate for an incentives program through which farmers are paid to flood rice fields for current and potential wintering Whooping Crane freshwater habitat and support those farmers in maintaining their priority to receive water on their lands through their state water permits, particularly during drought periods.
Work with landowners and partners to obtain funds and implement wetland restoration projects.
Work with landowners and partners to obtain funds and implement prairie restoration projects.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Work with the Whooping Crane Biologist to collect behavioral data.
Work with the Grants Officer and Development staff to raise funds for the Gulf Coast Programs.
Help maintain our GIS Database on habitat work across the Coastal Bend of Texas.

A Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree strongly preferred) in Wetland Ecology, Rangeland Management, or related field with 3 plus years’ experience in the Natural Resources profession (experience in habitat management preferred).
Strong vascular plant identification skills.
Strong knowledge of wetland and/or rangeland ecosystems and their management.
Experience conducting research and supporting study design and publication efforts.
Experience with vegetation sampling.
Valid state driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

It shall be the Mission of the Forest Preserve District of Kane County to acquire, hold, and maintain lands within Kane County, which contribute to the preservation of natural and historic resources and habitats, flora or fauna; to restore, restock, protect and preserve such lands for the education, recreation, and pleasure of all its citizens.

Job Summary:
Responsible for planning, organizing, directing and managing all functions and activities of the Natural Resource Management department, including land management, wildlife management, habitat restoration, and compliance with all federal, state and local laws. This position also provides expert professional assistance to District staff; fosters cooperative working relationships with other District departments, elected officials, volunteers, local environmental organizations and regulatory agencies, and various public and private groups.

Essential Position Duties & Functions:
Administration:

Hires, directs, manages, evaluates, promotes, disciplines or effectively recommends such action for assigned personnel with the consent of the Executive Director, following procedures established by the District.
Oversees the management of the department; Develops and implements department policies and procedures designed to improve natural resource management and wildlife conservation; minimizes operating costs and effects greater utilization of labor and materials; recommends policies and provides technical and operational advice in areas of expertise (i.e. assessment of natural resources and ecological trends).
Manages and directs the administrative operation of the Natural Resource Management department; meets regularly with Restoration Ecologist and Wildlife Biologist to establish current and upcoming seasonal field work initiatives; coordinates major project task and component planning with other departments.
Evaluates current and potential properties for ecological and preservation value and makes recommendations to the Executive Director.
Prepares and maintains various short- and long-term natural areas planning reports, including feasibility studies, restoration plans, flora and fauna inventories, etc.
Investigates new grant sources, advises the Executive Director of grant opportunities, writes and administers grants for natural resource projects; attends grant hearings and makes presentations; responsible for departmental grant follow-up compliance and reporting.

Acts as departmental liaison, along with Restoration Ecologist and Wildlife Biologist, to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Illinois Nature Preserves Commission, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Chicago Wilderness, Morton Arboretum, Chicago Botanic Garden, Lincoln Park and Brookfield Zoos, Chicago Field Museum, local colleges and universities, etc. on matters concerning natural areas management, ecological research, regional conservation goals and planning initiatives, plus threatened and endangered species concerns.
Represents the Executive Director and the District at public functions to interpret and explain the Forest Preserve District’s natural resources and facilities; handles public questions and requests; counsels community and volunteer groups to determine basic needs and improvements concerning the operation of the District in areas of natural resources.
Researches, plans and supervises the preparation of the Department’s budget and the control of expenditures; develops procedures for efficient cost effective operations; approves all expenditures not requiring Commission resolution; follows procedures set forth in purchasing policy.
Advises the Executive Director of upcoming needs for supplies, equipment, staffing, and cost estimates for current and future projects.
Formulates policies, regulations, organizational goals, and program priorities of the department for presentation to the Executive Director in compliance with generally recognized land management, restoration and wildlife management methods.
Recommends natural resource project budgets, directs and performs detailed on-site assessments, and technical research studies and compiles planning data for feasibility and alternative analysis studies; recommends ecological restoration alternatives and implements recommendations into preserve master plan and annual preserve management plan.
Researches, writes and/or reviews staff generated specifications for bids and request for quotes related to land management projects, wildlife and other scientific studies and equipment purchases.
Develops and maintains land management, wildlife conservation and restoration plans including prescribed burning, farmland management, reforestation, prairie restoration, wetland restoration, deer population evaluation and management, endangered and threatened species protection program and invasive species control; prepares ecological reports and assessments of sites for nature preserve dedication, site inventories, nature preserve annual reports, grant reports and easement requests.
Coordinates implementation of natural resource improvement projects with crew, including selection of outside consultants, specifications, bidding, contract and project administration as well as determining any necessary changes, resolving contract disputes, and preparing, submitting and recommending change orders and payment requests.
Organizes natural resource activities in conjunction with other District departments, volunteers, legal council, standing committees and outside agencies.
Forms partnerships with other land management agencies to assist with the planning and implementation of natural resource projects.
Prepares and presents information and recommendations relevant to the Executive Director.
Promotes the advancement and understanding of the District and its natural resource initiatives to the general public, media and other public agencies through speaking engagements, public meetings, and representing the District on inter-agency committees.
Collaborates with the Planning & Operations department on the creation of conceptual designs, master plans and grants to ensure the protection of the District’s various ecosystems.
Coordinates and communicates departmental activities with other Department Heads and outside agencies and organizations.
Prepares and submits periodic reports to the Executive Director and Commission regarding Department activities.
Coordinates with Human Resources department all activities within the Natural Resources department concerning employee benefits, recruitment, training, performance evaluations, workers’ compensation, selection and promotion, job analysis and classification with the consent of the Executive Director.
Performs other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Works irregular hours, including weekends, evenings and holidays.
Possesses and maintains a valid and current Illinois Driver’s License free from suspension or revocation during term of employment; must maintain insurability with the District’s fleet insurance carrier.

Obtains and maintains all required licenses and certifications and keeps up-to-date on professional trends and developments related to position accountabilities.

Establishes positive relationships with community, volunteers, staff, commissioners and preserve users.
Provides first aid and CPR to injured preserve users and/or employees.
Assists preserve users by providing information and answering questions.

Staff Supervision:

Supervises Restoration Ecologist and Wildlife Biologist; carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Age Requirement: 21 years old.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in ecology, botany, natural resource management, land management, or closely related field; Master’s degree in these areas a plus.
Experience: 6 – 8 years of progressively responsible land and/or wildlife management; five (5) years of senior-level management experience, preferably in conservation agency, park and recreation or an equivalent combination of relevant education, experience and training. ArcMap GIS experience a plus.
Certifications/Licenses: CPR/1st AID/AED, Pesticide Applicator, S-130/S-190 Prescribe Burn; all licenses/certifications must be obtained within one year of employment.

Environmental Analyst – Water Resource Protection

NEIWPCC is seeking a passionate full-time Environmental Analyst to join our expert, resourceful and collaborative team. This position will work closely with other staff and stakeholders to advance the mission and vision of NEIWPCC with a focus on the interaction between the Clean Water Act (CWA) and Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).  

The successful candidate will assist with projects and grants focused on source water protection and contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) as a technical expert and liaison to our partners. This position will be responsible for developing and implementing workplans, budgets, and contracts with state governmental agencies, and will oversee remote NEIWPCC staff working alongside those agencies on source water protection initiatives throughout the region.

The successful candidate will hold a degree in environmental science, natural science, public health, earth science, biology, chemistry, or related field. Must have knowledge of and experience with aspects of water quality and watershed management and quality assurance plans and programs. Excellent communication, organization, and computer skills, as well as comfort working in a very collaborative environment required. Experience with budget preparation, grant writing, and contract management preferred. Candidates with alternative qualifications or who have taken a less traditional career path may be considered if an aptitude for success and a strong willingness to learn is clearly apparent. Executive Director of Climate & Sustainability

Salary range: $57,188 – $85,000 annualized

This is a mayoral-appointed management position in a challenging work environment requiring strong administrative skills to direct and coordinate resources in addressing climate and other environmental sustainability policies and practices in the City of New Haven. Special focus is on addressing the health and economic impacts of climate change on already distressed populations from COVID-19 and other factors.

This position reports directly to the Mayor and Chief of Staff and will provide a key new role in working not only with New Haven city departments, but also with community members and organizations to help manage a city-wide climate emergency and sustainability portfolio. The position may also report to other individuals in the organization as designated by the Mayor and/or Chief of Staff. The position will focus on the impact of the climate emergency not only on City operations but also the broad community in balancing the City’s shared objectives for a healthy environment, an excellent quality of life, and continued economic vitality.

Graduation from an accredited college or university; master’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Management, Public Administration, Urban Planning, Architecture or a related field preferred. Two to five years of supervisory experience in a sustainability setting are also not required but preferred. Experience with media and communications strategy is also desirable. Ability to communicate in Spanish and GIS skills are a plus but are not required.

Executive Director

The Northeast Recycling Council (NERC) seeks an experienced leader with well-developed management and facilitation skills who can broaden NERC’s impact on minimizing waste, conserving natural resources, and advancing a sustainable economy through facilitated collaboration and action.

Organization

NERC’s programs are the result of an 11-state collaboration (Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont) that emphasizes source reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, environmentally preferable purchasing and decreasing the solid waste stream. Their projects and staff often impact national dialogues, contributing solutions to strategies for sustainable materials management.

A 35-year-old, $750K 501(c)3 organization, NERC acts as a facilitator to member states, the private sector, and other organizations, providing varied vehicles for collaboration, information sharing and direct support. NERC’s Board of Directors is comprised of a representative from each member state recycling agency and authorities, along with four ex officio members. The Board meets regularly with NERC staff to prioritize projects and directions. There are also 100 Advisory Members consisting of representatives from trade associations, all aspects of the recycling industry, local government, and environmental groups, providing input to committees, conferences and directly to the Board.

The NERC office is currently located in Brattleboro, Vermont, though much of the three staff members’ work is done remotely. This position has the potential to be in-office, hybrid or remote.

The scope of social topics is wide, including land tenure issues, challenges faced by smallholders and communities, Indigenous groups and their rights, labour-related issues such as worker treatment, minimum wage and living wage, child labour, gender-related issues, human rights, temporary and migrant workers and families associated, and other topics. As such, part of the task for this position will be to help in the prioritisation of these topics. 

What you will do 
As a Social Programme Manager, you will be our first expert with knowledge of the social topics. You will be involved in different issues and activities, from development and projects to training. Other duties will include:

Leading the development of Preferred by Nature’s social engagement and impact strategy in coordination with other relevant Preferred by Nature divisions and units 
In coordination with the implementation divisions, lead strengthening our social expertise and impact in the areas of Preferred by Nature services 
Providing social expertise for project development and fundraising
Participating in developing the sector and commodity strategies to bring social focus and expertise
Engaging with relevant stakeholders and partners and representing Preferred by Nature externally in relation to the areas of priority social topics
Conducting risk assessment and field visits in key regions 
Identifying regional social leaders and helping to increase social capacity
Helping to develop regional social teams, including external consultants
Developing training programmes

Program Services Specialist – Organics Reduction and Recycling Ordinance Project

The Program Services Specialist position primarily consists of fieldwork to perform site inspections of commercial and multifamily properties and office-based program support for implementation of a county-wide ordinance designed to reduce the amount of recyclable and compostable materials going to the landfill. On occasion, the position will also include site visits to monitor the use of reusable carry-out bags, field sampling for scientific studies, and program support for the Agency’s Facility Fee project. The position will receive direction from staff working on these projects. StopWaste offices are located at 1537 Webster Street in downtown Oakland, but the Program Services Specialist will also be performing fieldwork throughout Alameda County.

 Conservation Evidence Research Scientist

Bat Conservation International (BCI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to ending bat extinctions worldwide, seeks a Conservation Evidence Research Scientist to join BCI’s Science Team.

The CE Research Scientist will join a dynamic organization and a highly progressive team of conservation scientists, reporting directly to the Chief Scientist. The Research Scientist will conduct scientific research that contributes evidence to support actions that protect bat populations.

The CE Research Scientist must be highly collaborative and enjoy working within an environment that is mission and results-driven, where they can bring their whole self to work and contribute to positive ecological and social change. This position is ideal for an early career scientist interested in applied conservation with interest and experience conducting rigorous scientific research, including analyzing existing datasets, writing scientific publications that contribute conservation evidence, and working collaboratively. This position will focus initially on analyzing and publishing existing datasets but includes some opportunity to lead fieldwork, specifically in Texas.

BCI is a distributed organization with staff across the United States with two offices in Washington, DC and Austin, TX. The Research Scientist can live anywhere but is preferred to be based near Austin, Texas. The Research Scientist will work closely with BCI’s Chief Scientist and BCI’s Science Team to publish scientific findings that inform conservation efforts.

Position Description:

The Conservation Evidence Research Scientist will:

  • Analyze data and produce scientific publications that inform bat conservation
  • Contribute to BCI’s scientific research efforts by ensuring experimental design, data collection, data management, and result dissemination is rigorous and timely
  • Develop research questions and outputs related to bat conservation strategies
  • Disseminate results of research in presentations, reports, and peer-reviewed publications
  • Collaborate effectively with BCI’s science and conservation teams and external partners

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

Required Knowledge/Experience

  • Ph.D. degree in a relevant field such as biology, ecology, wildlife, conservation, or a related field
  • Proficiency in scientific writing and written communication skills, including a strong academic publication record related to bat ecology and conservation
  • Proficiency in quantitative analyses, including use of advanced statistics and proficiency in reproducible and open science tools
  • Proficiency in data visualization
  • Demonstrated interest in hypothesis-driven research and applied conservation
  • Demonstrated familiarity with bat ecology and conservation
  • Ability and interest in communicating results to diverse stakeholders and audiences
  • Proven success with managing multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and accurately with attention to detail and the ability to prioritize under the pressure of deadlines
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of staff, government agencies, industry, landowners, and other partners

Preferred Knowledge/Experience

  • Experience and interest in engaging with different communities and developing opportunities that encourage and grow a diverse, equitable, and inclusive conservation science community
  • Demonstrated ability and interest in proposal writing to support research
  • Familiarity with field research with bats
