JOB SUMMARY

The Forest Collaborative Manager is responsible for the facilitation, leadership, and administrative support to the Northern Blues Forest Collaborative (NBFC) which spans two national forests in NE Oregon and SE Washington State: the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest (WWNF) and the Umatilla National Forest (UNF). This position’s main purpose is to assist the NBFC with advancing landscape and watershed-scale forest restoration across the northern Blues and actively engaging with multi-party monitoring to enhance learning, strengthen relationships and build broad support for restoration activities. This work includes advancing the new Northern Blues All Lands Forest Restoration Project – an ambitious ten million acre collaboration restoration initiative involving both forests, private landowners, counties and tribes.

The Forest Collaborative Manager’s performance is evaluated by NBFC’s Steering Committee, which includes Wallowa Resources’ Executive Director. Wallowa Resources’ Board acknowledges and respects the primacy of the NBFC Steering Committee in providing strategic direction and annual priorities for the NBFC, and establishing relevant NBFC specific operational policies procedures and work plans.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans, facilitates, and attends monthly meetings and conference calls with the members of the NBFC Steering Committee: establishes content, creates agendas, and sends notices and relevant supporting documents.

  • Ensures that meeting objectives are met, discussion is open and fair, differing opinions are heard and respected, and stakeholder participation is maximized through effective meeting facilitation and leadership. 

  • Creates and distributes meeting minutes and follows up in a timely manner on the tasks, action items, and duties of Collaborative members, USFS staff, and others after each meeting, conference call, special meeting, or work session.

  • Coordinates guest presenters, lecturers, panelists, and other experts for the NBFC, and arranges occasional daylong field site tours on both National Forests.

  • Arranges all logistical details for meetings, guest presenters, site tours, special workshops, trainings, and symposiums: reserves rooms, venue spaces, and presentation equipment; creates meeting materials; coordinates transportation and lodging; etc.

  • Maintains open, clear, and timely communication on a regular basis with individual Steering Committee members Collaborative members, stakeholders, landowners, staff members, government officials, members of the public, and others.

  • Provides direction and administrative support to all committees, both standing and ad hoc, and sub-working groups of the Collaborative.

  • Maintains and updates relevant materials, documents, announcements, and scientific papers and publications on the NBFC website.

  • Writes grant applications, including mid-project and post-project reporting.

  • Provides community outreach and engages in involvement opportunities whenever beneficial and/or necessary.

  • Reviews and updates the Operating Principles, Vision/Mission statements, Strategic Plans, and central goals and objectives of the NBFC Collaborative with the Steering Committee on a regular basis.

  • Attends and actively participates in weekly WR staff meetings and to ensure WR remains up-to-date on the NBFC, and opportunities to leverage resources and opportunities are identified and pursued as appropriate.

  • Attends WR Board meetings, fundraisers, and events as deemed appropriate by the NBFC Steering Committee.

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The following are the minimum levels required to successfully perform the Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Communications, Natural Resources Management, Community Development, or related field, or relevant equivalent experience is required. A background or strong interest in public land management is preferred.

  • 5 years of experience working directly with boards, community organizations, and/or non-profit associations to lead, educate, and facilitate groups to successfully achieve organization goals and mandates is required.

  • 5 years of project leadership and/or management experience in business operations, media communications, project management, or related field is required. Experience writing grants and fundraising is preferred.

  • A valid Oregon Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record according to WR’s auto liability policy requirements.

  • Must consistently demonstrate teamwork and positive day-to-day work relationships and interactions with staff, board members, members of the collaborative, other community stakeholders, and the public.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment and Physical Requirements: The Forest Collaborative Manager works primarily in an office environment; however, the position visits field locations including forests and wood product business sites. Those locations are subject to a variety of extreme weather conditions including rain, snow, wind, and dust. The position frequently requires travel by car to attend meetings and occasional overnight travel. The Forest Collaborative Manager interacts constantly with Collaborative committee members, staff, visitors, government agencies, and others. The position sits, stands, walks, bends, lifts, and moves intermittently during working hours. The incumbent must be able to lift, push, pull and move files and equipment in excess of 10 pounds.

Hours: Typical office hours are full time from 8:00a.m. to 5:00p.m., Monday through Friday. The Forest Collaborative Manager may be required to work extended hours and travel on non-work days. This includes evenings, weekends, and holidays.
