Senior Director, Water for Birds and People

The Senior Director, Water for Birds and People, North America, leads Audubon’s Initiative to focus on the creation of a connected network of protected, managed, and restored freshwater rivers, lakes, and wetland habitats. Through improved science-based water management, long-term water policy solutions, demonstrations of successful on-the-ground restoration projects, and involvement of Audubon’s network and partners, this initiative will work to stabilize and increase populations of priority bird species that will in turn support clean water for people. The position will ensure work within its portfolio contributes impact toward the organization’s Habitat Conservation goals and other strategic initiatives.

Under the direction of the Vice President, Habitat, North America, the Senior Director will establish priorities, detailed goals, specific strategies and tactics for water efforts in the United States and advise on work in Canada and Mexico as part of supporting Audubon’s hemispheric vision. These solutions include both policy and on-the-ground conservation efforts. The position is expected to work closely with peers across the organization responsible for local, regional, and national-level plans that successfully implement and scale these strategies. They will work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure an integrated approach to water conservation across the hemisphere.

The Senior Director is expected to build and maintain relationships with key water leaders, coalitions, partners, and government officials and will serve as an important fundraising partner with Development. They will elevate Audubon’s leadership and profile with relevant external stakeholders and audiences.

This is a hybrid position based in Audubon’s New York City or Washington, DC offices. We will also consider remote candidates within the United States.

Qualifications and Experience:

10+ years’ progressive, professional experience in policy, government relations, advocacy, science on-the-ground conservation and/or public service, including time spent leading successful conservation efforts.

3+ years in a leadership position. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.

Solid expertise in developing conservation strategies, water management and/or wildlife conservation issues and policies, as well as strong connections with leading experts in this field.

Firm grasp of conservation issues and trends.

Demonstrated experience overseeing complex and multiple projects in a matrixed environment to success, including meeting financial goals, project deadlines, and communicating and coordinating closely with key staff and partners.

Overall Function

The Senior Manager, Texas Clean Affordable Power leads EDF’s regulatory advocacy in support of clean energy in Texas. This primarily comprises representing EDF before ERCOT and the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT), in collaboration with legal staff, to advance EDF’s policy positions with respect to generation sector decarbonization, efficient end-use electrification, and energy affordability. This position also supports EDF’s legislative advocacy related to clean energy, particularly with respect to Texas. Subject-matter areas of focus include utility forecasting and planning; grid infrastructure buildout; leveraging distributed energy resources; load flexibility and demand response; grid reliability and resiliency; vehicle and building electrification; and electricity rate design. In addition to engaging with administrative agencies, this position will also work with external and internal partners to develop strategy, refine policies, generate thought leadership, and leverage external communications to support and amplify clean energy advocacy across the country.

Qualifications

8+ years of relevant professional experience, including at least 4 years of ERCOT and/or PUCT practice, and a Bachelor’s degree required. Experience in both ERCOT and non-ERCOT regions of Texas preferred. A Master’s degree or equivalent may substitute for up to 2 years of relevant experience; J.D., Ph.D., or equivalent may substitute for up to 4 years of relevant experience.

Policy Director

Founded in 2012 by landowners and managers, the organization aims to increase the wellbeing of working lands in the American West and the living communities, including human and wildlife, that depend on them.

Position Overview: The Policy Director will lead the organization’s state and federal policy strategy, working with leadership, advisors, members, and partners to identify priorities and execute strategies to achieve policy goals. The American Flood Coalition is seeking an experienced people and project manager to build and lead our growing team of regional state government relations directors. Vice President, Rockies

The National Audubon Society seeks a dynamic, entrepreneurial, and strategic candidate to lead and grow Audubon’s programs in the Rockies region (Colorado, Utah, Wyoming). The Vice President, Rockies leads Audubon’s work and team across the three states and ensures impact toward the organization’s strategic plan. They will advance habitat, climate, policy, and community building strategies in the region that directly contribute to Audubon goals and strategic initiatives, while also building and enhancing relationships with partner organizations, influential stakeholders, and funders in the region and neighboring states to support increased conservation impact.

Reporting to the Vice President, Conservation Action, Western Flyways, the Vice President, Rockies will be a strong team leader who designs and drives execution on programs to successfully scale and implement Audubon’s initiatives supporting its strategic plan. The Rockies region is uniquely positioned to advance Audubon’s water, working lands, grassland habitat and protected areas programs. The Vice President will collaborate closely and provide leadership and alignment on these initiatives with regional staff, and with Audubon’s leaders of Habitat Conservation, Climate Action, Policy, and Community Building initiatives. They will work collaboratively with colleagues across Audubon’s Conservation department to ensure their program’s work contributes to an ambitious and hemispheric approach to conservation.

The Vice President will be responsible for effectively managing their budget, serving as an important fundraising partner with Audubon’s Development team, driving public funding opportunities, and collaborating on projects and proposals that secure funds to advance Audubon’s conservation priorities.

This position is classified as hybrid preferred, but we will also consider remote candidates within the Rockies region, in accordance with Audubon’s “Where We Work” Policy. Whidbey Environmental Action Network (WEAN) is seeking a Program Director to support our mission of protecting ecosystems on Whidbey, Camano, and beyond through civic education, policy advocacy, and litigation. This full-time role will help us design and execute campaigns to shape land use policy outcomes that protect ecosystems in Island County and beyond.

The Program Director is WEAN’s lead strategist for policy advocacy campaign design and execution. This role shapes how we understand the environmental advocacy landscape— carrying priority issues forward, analyzing data, identifying policy and enforcement gaps, and building mission-aligned campaigns that move people to act. A qualified applicant will have demonstrated expertise in environmental science, environmental policy, or land use planning; strong analytical and written communication skills; and experience designing and executing public engagement campaigns or civic education programs. Familiarity with Washington State environmental law and/or land use policy and the ability to work independently in a small-organization setting are essential.

Coordinator, Conservation Law

This position involves a broad range of administrative and advocacy responsibilities in support of the Department. This role has responsibility for assuring the efficient administrative functioning of a fast-paced department, including staff attorneys with administrative and other support on legal cases; administering Defenders’ litigation docket, Conservation Law Department budgets and web content; handling information requests on legal program issues; representing the department in internal and external meetings on select issues; and coordinating office procedures to facilitate accomplishment of work plans. In addition, the coordinator regularly functions as the Vice President’s liaison to staff, environmental organizations, Defenders’ members and the general public.

This role is expected to develop strong knowledge of current legal cases and projects and provide general assistance to staff members on various matter relating to those projects. This position requires substantial discretion in determining how to meet assigned goals and competing deadlines.

The coordinator must be extremely well-organized and have excellent administrative skills; possess strong oral and written communication skills; be capable of articulating Defenders’ position on complex issues; and possess a commitment to natural resource conservation.

Senior Manager, California State Affairs

The State Affairs program of the Political Affairs department leads EDF’s efforts to achieve our policy goals through legislative, regulatory, and political engagement at the state and local levels. Our lobbyists, communicators, organizers and experts work together to achieve progress on our priority issues.
Overall Function

The Senior Manager, California State Affairs will lead the development and implementation of key aspects of EDF’s California-based work. Reporting to Senior Director, California, the Senior Manager’s responsibilities will include leading the collaborative design and implementation of effective education and policy advocacy campaigns to support EDF’s major workstream priorities in California. This work will entail managing consultants, coordinating among multiple EDF workstreams and experts, coordinating with partner organizations, owning relationships with key stakeholders, influential decisionmakers and/or government agencies, and representing EDF and organizational positions to external stakeholders. The Senior Manager will be a key “on the ground” presence for EDF and EDF Action in Sacramento, representing the organization and its priorities.

Flexibility and willingness to learn and develop functional subject matter expertise in the areas of climate change, clean energy, forestry, water, and/or clean transportation is required. The Senior Manager will take responsibility for tracking policy for specific subject areas and coordinating with the relevant EDF experts, external stakeholders and policymakers.

The Senior Manager will manage 1-2 junior staff members, will independently guide and manage specific projects, and serve as the main point of internal and external contact for discrete projects or campaigns. Independent judgement is required to plan, prioritize, and organize workload. Ideal candidates are driven self-starters with the ability to learn new subject matter, with demonstrated success in California government or government relations.

Qualifications

Minimum of eight years’ experience working to effect change in California, including a demonstrated history of success in state environmental policy through engagement with industry, regulators, elected officials and other public-interest stakeholders.

Salary: $110,000 – $120,000 USD/Yr.
