Founded in 2005, Western Conservation Foundation (WCF) is a 501(c)(3) public charity based in Denver, Colorado. Alongside our 501(c)(4) advocacy organization Western Conservation Action, Western Conservation Foundation provides grants to nonprofits to support their public education and lobbying activities that build stronger leaders to protect the West’s land, air, and water.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Principal Deputy Director of the Federal Public Lands Program, the Washington DC-based Federal Lands Program Conservation Fellow is a 2-year fellowship. The Fellow will support WCF’s national campaign operation, working on research and communications tasks that advance new national monument designations, support pro-public lands policies within Congress and the Administration, and fight against efforts to reduce protections or public access to public lands.

The Federal Public Lands Program Fellow will:

Research potential grantees and possible new partners and make recommendations to the Foundation’s program managers.
Complete office-based research in potential monument campaigns and new Administration appointees.
Support the Foundation’s Program Managers in working with national and Western grantees to drive national and local campaigns.
Draft earned media and other public materials for the Foundation’s grantees and partners, ensuring that each document reflects the authentic voice of the speaker.
Track legislative and administrative proposals that would weaken the Antiquities Act or reallocate funds from the Land and Water Conservation Fund and help the Foundation’s DC team develop appropriate communications strategies to fight these proposals.
Attend Congressional meetings and other events as assigned.

LOCATION
This is a full-time hybrid position based in Washington, DC. Fellows will be expected to work in the office at least 2-3 days week.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Vice President, Land and Habitat Conservation

The Vice President for Land and Habitat Conservation leads Defenders’ national policy work to conserve federal and private lands vital to maintaining and recovering this nation’s biodiversity. The Vice President develops and oversees policy initiatives designed to protect, connect, and restore federal lands critical to imperiled species with an eye to long-term transformation of federal lands systems for biodiversity. Current work focuses on the National Wildlife Refuge System, National Forest System, and National System of Public Lands. The Vice President also leads Defenders’ work to bolster and accelerate private land conservation through national-level administrative and legislative advocacy. These programs involve a wide range of policy, legal, advocacy communications, and scientific strategies to conserve wildlife.

Priority areas include protecting federal lands and waters important to the conservation of threatened and endangered species; developing and promoting incentives to conserve biodiversity on federal and private lands and waters; influencing federal administrative and legislative initiatives impacting imperiled species and ecosystems and other natural resources; and maintaining and enhancing the ecological integrity of priority wildlife habitat and biodiversity in general. The Vice President works closely with senior leadership to advance organizational vitality and diversity, equity, inclusion and justice values and goals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIE

Drive development and implementation of conservation programs and initiatives to achieve strategic and programmatic goals and objectives, in coordination with the Conservation Leadership Team.
Provide leadership to ensure resources are focused on high-impact conservation strategies and projects, while also making ongoing recommendations to executive leadership regarding future conservation investments.
Coordinate with other members of the Conservation Leadership Team to effectively deliver conservation outcomes and advise on issues related to federal and private land conservation policy.
Work with the Conservation Leadership Team, Development and Marketing departments and the CEO on fundraising to support and advance Defenders’ conservation priorities and programs.
Manage a high-performing team and provide results driven leadership by establishing annual work objectives and priorities and evaluating these objectives on an ongoing basis.
Work closely with the President & CEO, Senior Vice President for Conservation Programs, and other members of Defenders’ senior leadership to provide leadership direction on matters involving Defenders’ organization, programs and culture.
Provide senior leadership for Defenders’ land and habitat conservation work. In coordination with other departments, develop short- and long-range strategic plan objectives, organizational structure, and department staffing and budget requirements.
In consultation with Defenders’ leadership and other departments, develop wildlife habitat and land conservation policy positions to achieve Defenders’ strategic goals and priorities.
Manage Defenders’ programs to provide for the long-term conservation and sustainable management of federal public lands and waters for imperiled species and other wildlife, focusing on the National Wildlife Refuge System, National Forest System, and the National System of Public Lands.
Work with federal agencies, Congress, state agencies, tribes and other stakeholders to ensure appropriate consideration of the effects of climate change on biodiversity in management of lands and habitat nationwide and in determining public policy to address climate change.
Work with private landowners, land trusts, other nongovernmental organizations and other stakeholders to promote sound wildlife conservation on private lands.
Direct, coordinate, and/or assist Defenders’ advocacy efforts to influence legislation, regulatory processes, agency policies, and land management plans involving issues of land and habitat conservation.
Represent Defenders in public meetings, hearings, press events, conferences, coalitions, and in general communications with public officials, legislators, the news media, Defenders’ membership, the donor community, and the public.
Ensure optimum performance for individuals and group function. Recommend and implement techniques to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, and maintain state-of-the-art practices for the department.
Ensure communication of duties and responsibilities to direct reports and monitor performance. Provide regular coaching and counseling. Identify training needs. Prepare and deliver salary and performance reviews; review and approve performance and salary appraisals as necessary. Work with the Human Resources department, resolve staff disciplinary issues.

THE OPPORTUNITY

State Climate Policy Associate Manager

Pacific Environment seeks a State Climate Policy Associate Manager to advance our climate priorities and provide critical policy support for Pacific Environment’s campaigns on zero-emission shipping and ports in California. They will provide research, writing, and analytical support to implement the Climate Program’s legislative and campaign priorities, provide logistical support for meetings and events, and manage California policy and regulatory work streams. The successful candidate will have policy advocacy experience, specifically legislative experience, at the California or state-level, and a passion for solving the climate crisis.

This position will report to the Climate Policy Director.

Location

This position is remote and requires working West Coast time zone hours, with a strong preference for physical presence in Sacramento, California. While most work will be completed remotely, there will be travel obligations for in-person legislative and regulatory hearings, meetings and events.

Salary Range for New York based applicants: $121,000 – $152,000 annually (Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location and other factors permitted by law).

Legal Intern

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is the government agency responsible for protecting air quality in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Air District is tasked with regulating stationary sources of air pollution in the nine counties that surround San Francisco Bay: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, southwestern Solano, and southern Sonoma counties. It is governed by a 24-member Board of Directors composed of locally elected officials from each of the nine counties. The Air District’s mission is to create a healthy breathing environment for every Bay Area resident, while protecting and improving public health, air quality and the global climate.

The Air District is recruiting for the position of LEGAL INTERN in the Legal Office. This is a temporary, exempt summer position. There are two (2) vacancies.

DEFINITION

Under close supervision by a licensed attorney, performs various work related to, and in support of, legal casework being undertaken by attorneys in the Legal Division. Staff Attorney

Appalachian Mountain Advocates is a non-profit public interest law firm with offices in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. We have worked for nearly 25 years to bring polluters and state and federal regulators into compliance with environmental laws, sometimes with success.

Position Details

We seek a lawyer to work in our Pittsburgh office. We are an aggressive, litigation-oriented organization. We typically bring cases under state and federal environmental statutes such as the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, NEPA, ESA, RCRA, and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act through citizen suits, court challenges to agency action, and state common law. We bring precedent-setting, complicated, and expert-intensive cases, generally representing national, regional and local environmental groups. We seek a creative lawyer with the desire and ability to develop and pursue their own cases (with the supervision of senior lawyers); this is not a typical associate or “law-fellow” position.

The successful applicant will handle a wide range of litigation primarily in Pennsylvania, with some work as in neighboring states. We have offices in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Lewisburg and Charleston, West Virginia; and Charlottesville, Virginia.

Qualifications:

Experience as a judicial law clerk is preferred but not required.
Admitted or willing to apply for admission to the Pennsylvania Bar

Strong work ethic and the ability to work with a team or independently
3Ls may apply.
1 to 3 years litigation experience is preferred, but not required (i.e. we will hire directly from law school, but would prefer candidates with some experience)

Environmental Compliance & Permitting Intern

Phoenix-based SRP, the nation’s third-largest public power and water utility, is currently recruiting for an Environmental or related sciences major to fill a College Intern position in our Environmental Compliance and Permitting Department in Tempe, AZ.
What You’ll Do

Within this role, the intern would be expected to support the air quality team with environmental compliance related activities, which include but are not limited to, emission calculations, recordkeeping, reporting, data collection/review and reading, and interpreting and applying environmental regulations.
Education
College level coursework (100+) from an accredited institution will be evaluated on an individual basis according to the skill/level to determine if applicable to the position by management.

Campaigns & Government Affairs Advocate

The Campaigns & Government Affairs Advocate will lead Evergreen’s advocacy efforts on key climate issues, build strong relationships internally and with federal decision-makers, and drive impactful campaigns that advance bold climate policies. The Advocate will navigate political challenges, champion issues like utility accountability, transportation, and industrial decarbonization, and spearhead high-priority initiatives during critical political moments.

What You Will Do

Engage Federal Policymakers: Build and manage relationships with key Congressional offices and federal agencies, serving as Evergreen’s primary point of contact for climate policy issues. Lead briefings and meetings with decision-makers.
Collaborate with Coalition Partners: Establish and strengthen relationships with climate justice organizations, labor unions, and other advocacy groups. Identify opportunities for collaboration and alignment to drive collective impact on shared campaign goals.
Lead Campaign Strategy: Develop and execute comprehensive strategies for issue-based campaigns, ensuring coordination across Evergreen’s departments. This includes setting goals, tracking progress, and adapting to emerging political opportunities.
Coordinate Cross-Team Efforts: Work closely with the policy, communications, and research teams to ensure that campaign efforts are well-integrated and aligned with organizational objectives.
Represent Evergreen Publicly: Act as Evergreen’s voice in coalitions and advocacy tables, participating in or leading coalition meetings and webinars to build Evergreen’s profile and amplify key issues.
Monitor Legislative and Regulatory Developments: Stay updated on relevant climate legislation, regulatory actions, and partner priorities. Share insights with the Evergreen team to guide advocacy strategies and adjust campaigns accordingly.

What You Bring

5+ years of government affairs experience, ideally in lobbying or advocacy roles. Familiarity with Congressional processes, agency rulemaking, and climate policy is a plus.
Proven ability to lead campaigns: Experience developing and managing issue-based campaigns, working across teams, and driving measurable outcomes.
Strong relationships with policymakers: Existing contacts in Congress or federal agencies are highly valued.
Strategic thinking: Ability to quickly adapt to shifting priorities, identify opportunities, and deliver results under tight timelines.
Excellent communication skills: You can articulate complex climate policies to diverse audiences, including policymakers, partners, and the public.
