Conservation Officer

Being a Conservation Officer (CO) is not just a rewarding career, it’s an opportunity to make a difference by protecting Minnesota’s natural resources and the people that use them.

Conservation Officers work to ensure public safety and compliance with state game and fish, recreational vehicle, and natural resource commercial operation laws. Responsibilities include law enforcement, public safety, and education in the following areas: hunting and fishing seasons, methods of taking animals and fish, possession limits, public safety, especially where it concerns alcohol use while hunting or operating recreational vehicles and watercraft, commercial use and possession of natural resources and products, the protection of the state’s land, air, and water, and youth and adult safety training and hunter education classes.

Conservation Officers work variable hours to meet the seasonal needs in their assigned patrol areas and often work from a 4×4 patrol vehicle, a snowmobile, ATV, or from various watercraft. Conservation Officers are expected to work nights, weekends, holidays and game and fish season openers.

Selected candidates will attend a 15 week training academy at Camp Ripley in Little Falls, Minnesota where you will be expected to live onsite Monday through Friday. Following the 15 week training academy, successful candidates are then required to complete 16 weeks of field training where you will work closely with an experienced Conservation Officer.

Minimum Qualifications

Must possess a valid MN Peace Officer’s License.

Or be eligible to be licensed by the MN Peace Officers Standards and Training Board (POST) by October 28, 2024;
Or complete basic police training and be certified as a full-time peace officer in a state or federal law enforcement agency with which Minnesota has reciprocity and pass the POST Board reciprocity exam by October 28, 2024.

Must be able to act with or without direct supervision and exercise good discretion and judgement while working independently or as a team.

Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with both internal and external customers.

Reading comprehension skill sufficient to interpret law, statutes, etc.

Oral and written communications skills sufficient to clearly, concisely and effectively communicate in English legal and non-legal information to various people/audiences.

No felony or gross misdemeanor conviction in Minnesota or crime in any other state or federal jurisdiction which would have been a felony if committed in Minnesota.

No other criminal convictions involving serious natural resource violations, crimes involving moral turpitude or two or more alcohol related driving violations for the past ten years. No DWI, reckless or careless driving, or other serious driving violations within the last five years.

In addition to the above minimum qualifications, candidates must pass the general written exam to be admitted to other portions of the exam/selection process.

Policy Analyst, Land and Water Program Implementation

You will help advance the team’s policy work addressing the sustainability of water and land resources and helping communities implement meaningful policies and practical solutions that recognize their connection. You will work closely with our Lincoln Institute land and water team evaluating resilient futures for water, food, and agriculture through scenario planning and adaptive management approaches, building cross-disciplinary partnerships and networks, and advancing innovative approaches to effectively address smart land and water integration in planning, decision making, and land and water management through research, education, training, and demonstration projects.

This is a full-time position in our Phoenix office at 37.5 hours/week reporting to the Associate Director, Land and Water Program Implementation. This position requires up to 10% travel, primarily throughout the western U.S. with occasional national and international travel.
What You Will Do

The Watershed Agricultural Council, a non-profit organization working to protect the NYC Watershed, while supporting farm and forest land uses, is seeking a Conservation Planner. Advising and counseling executive leadership and staff from the Department of Public Health and Environment; the Office of Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency; and the Mayor’s Office regarding environmental law, renewable energy, government contracting, municipal law, administrative hearings and rulemakings, and related topics

Drafting and negotiating contracts and grant agreements

Participating in the City’s most complex real estate development projects as the senior expert on environmental issues

Drafting and interpreting City ordinances, rules and regulations, and charter requirements

Conducting and/or supervising legal research

As assigned by the City Attorney, providing City officers and employees with counsel and advice and formal legal opinions on complex matters, in specialized legal areas

Providing guidance to associate and entry level attorneys

Performing other related duties as assigned or requested.

What You’ll Bring

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience with:

CERCLA, RCRA, CWA, CAA, and/or renewable energy

Drafting and negotiating contracts

Municipal law

Administrative hearings and rulemakings

Preferred experience must be demonstrated on application/resume.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Education requirement: Doctor of Jurisprudence degree or Bachelor of Laws degree.

Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of experience as an attorney at law.

Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.

License/Certifications: Possession of a license to practice law in Colorado from the Colorado Supreme Court by the date of hire or a reasonable expectation of becoming licensed by the Colorado Supreme Court by the date of hire in accordance with C.R.C.P. 203.2, 203.3, 203.4 and 205.6.

Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
