Senior Sustainability Planner

The Senior Sustainability Planner at The University of California, Irvine’s Campus Planning & Sustainability office, plays a pivotal role in advancing sustainability initiatives and helps achieve sustainability goals. Serves as a lead in supporting the implementation of the UC Sustainable Practices Policy including reporting responsibilities, AASHE STARS reporting, climate action and resiliency planning, managing sustainability programs (including Green Labs) and initiatives, staff sustainability training, award submittals, web and media communications, sustainability-focused tours, facilitates collaboration across campus and with community stakeholders, participates in system-wide sustainability work groups, and manages up to four student interns. Job Purpose – Water is one of the biggest concerns in Colorado, and Resource Central’s popular Slow the Flow program is celebrating twenty years of helping people conserve water – with more than 170 million gallons of water saved! The Water Conservation Associate will play an essential role in the Slow the Flow program by completing sprinkler system checkups and providing simple recommendations to reduce water use on lawns. This is a field-based conservation role that involves driving from home to appointments daily and providing outstanding customer service. The position starts June 3, 2024 and is expected to last into August (or September) 2024. Compensation includes $18.50/hr, mileage reimbursement, cell phone stipend, paid training, and paid sick leave. Principal Responsibilities – The essential duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Help people conserve water by conducting sprinkler system checkups at homes, businesses, and other properties; we provide training.
Travel from home to worksite locations daily; appointment locations will be assigned to minimize commute times when possible; we provide mileage reimbursement.
Test sprinkler systems, collect data, and make small adjustments to sprinkler heads to conserve water and improve system performance.
Program sprinkler control clocks to provide a more efficient watering schedule.

Officer, Preventing Ocean Plastics

Pew’s preventing ocean plastics project aims to provide the evidence base for concerted global action to reduce the flow of plastic into the ocean. The project focuses on evaluating and implementing the economically and politically viable steps and catalyzing effective and efficient efforts and investments globally to reduce the flow of plastics entering the world’s oceans. Specifically, the project aims to help develop policies to address in-country plastic use and waste, unintentional microplastics, and plastics trade as well as increased accountability of public and private actions, all supported by the dissemination of research and tools.

Position Overview

The officer, preventing ocean plastics, will serve as a subject matter expert, focused on ensuring the policy positions advanced by the plastics team are based on the best available information. This position will focus on bridging the technical analyses conducted by the team with policy development and collaborate with team members across all six workstreams, which span modeling and scenario analyses to metrics development to policy advocacy. This position will also advise on the best approaches for multilateral policies and assist in developing and implementing strategies to deliver those policies.

Reporting to the project director, preventing ocean plastics, this position is based in Washington, DC (or London) and will participate in Pew’s core in-office days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will have flexibility to work from home the remainder of each week.

Responsibilities

Policy Analyst

Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) is seeking a Policy Analyst to join our team working to protect New England’s environment for all people. Environmental Justice Research Fellow and Policy Engagement Leader

Resources for the Future is seeking experienced researchers and policy specialists ready to lead team-based research, fundraising, and policy engagement activities on U.S. environmental justice issues, including analysis of the demographic and geographic distribution of climate change and climate policy impacts. Candidates should have a deep understanding of economic and other social outcomes affected by climate change, adaptation, and resilience policies; the design of policies that affect social outcomes and their distribution; have experience working in partnership with community-based organizations; and have an understanding of EJ’s history and current issues.

Legislative Affairs Manager

The Center for Climate Integrity (CCI) seeks an experienced policy manager to oversee the development and execution of a national state legislative strategy. Wading Bird Research Specialist

The Wading Bird Research Specialist will work closely with the State Director of Research at the Everglades Science Center. Their primary responsibilities will be a combination of fieldwork and office projects. This is a full-time position where the Specialist will manage multiple field projects including, but not exclusive to, the capturing, banding, and tracking of Roseate spoonbills, organizing, and leading physical surveys of nesting colonies to quantify roseate spoonbill nesting success and gather nesting numbers of all waterbird species in those colonies. Furthermore, the Specialist will develop the best techniques and equipment needed to assess the efficacy of using nest cameras as a substitute for physical surveys of colonies thereby achieving contractual targets. This is a hybrid role consisting of fieldwork and work done in the office at the Everglades Science Center. The standard work week is 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, with occasional work on the weekend.

The Specialist will also manage the collection and entering of biological data from Florida Bay and the Everglades. The Specialist will need to train seasonal technicians (usually two direct reports) and coach them as to where and how best to assist in accomplishing these tasks to reach operational targets. This role will have a permanent direct report. The overall operation at ESC is accomplished through an integrated network of several data collection teams (hydrology, vegetation, prey fish and wading bird teams with the Specialist acting as lead on the wading bird team). Collecting the data will rely on a great deal of teamwork on the part of the Specialists’ ability to integrate with these other tasks by being flexible with not only their own time but the seasonal employees’ time as well. Working with the Center Director to complete reports as required. Wading bird nesting colonies are monitored at scheduled times from as early as October to as late as June. The Specialist will be asked to assist with other projects associated with wading bird ecology in Florida Bay. Colonies will be accessed using powerboats, rowboats, canoes, kayaks and on foot (wading).

Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field (or equivalent in field experience) required; understanding and respect of the scientific method is paramount.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated manager to establish and lead a ground-breaking effort to drive adoption of clean energy land-sharing in order to transition from fossil fuel production. The Clean Energy Program Manager will successfully plan and implement new wind and solar projects, oversee community and industry engagement, and launch new tools to make the transition accessible throughout the wider market in the Western United States. The ideal candidate will have a background in program management and team leadership within a climate or environmental advocacy organization or government, and a keen understanding of renewable energy project development, state and federal energy policy, community engagement, and the oil and gas industry.

The new Clean Energy program will lower the barrier to entry by partially absorbing the “first moverâ€ costs to establish clean energy pilot projects on federal and state oil and gas lands, and undertaking outreach and advocacy across the energy industry, communities, and policymakers. The program will drive scale through developing online interactive toolkits to help small business owners transition away from fossil fuels; and driving legislative and administrative policy changes to remove barriers and unlock funding.

The Program Manager will work with Planet Reimagined’s leadership to build the Common Grounds team, lead fundraising and donor stewardship efforts, facilitate collaboration with local and national partners, organize project timelines and budget, and manage stakeholder engagement to to successfully deliver project objectives. The Program Manager is a senior role reporting to the Managing Director.

Key Responsibilities:

Recruit, build and oversee a diverse team of 4-6 people across relevant disciplines

Achieve significant collaboration and coherence across staff and advisors with different backgrounds and expertise including engineers, advocates, grassroots organizers, lawyers, and business professionals

Manage project budgets, timelines, and reporting on KPIs to a range of stakeholders

Facilitate fruitful relationships between oil and gas operators, renewable energy developers, and others to develop and implement comprehensive project plans, staying mindful of project scope and timeline

Act as the primary point of contact for program stakeholders, expanding and maintaining strong relationships with funders, advocacy partners, local communities and project developers

Stay informed of the latest trends and advancements in the renewable energy and oil & gas sectors and ensure compliance with industry standards, environmental policies, and the changing regulatory environment

This is a virtual position and can be based anywhere, though you need to have U.S. work authorization and be available to regularly join meetings in Eastern Time Zone hours. This is a full-time salaried position.

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $125,000–$140,000

Full time employees are eligible for paid holidays and vacations

Additional stipend to recognize the high cost of health care

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Engineering, Environmental Science or Environmental Policy, Business, Project Management, or related field. A Master’s degree or additional professional certifications is a plus

Minimum of 6+ years of program management experience within an environment/climate advocacy organization, energy-related government position, renewable energy or oil & gas industry or related field

Strong understanding of project management principles, methodologies, and tools

Excellent leadership and communication skills with a management approach likely to thrive within Planet Reimagined’s collaborative culture of shared values and mutual respect

Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail, with the ability to be effective leading a nimble start-up initiative and the continuing flexibility and adaptability needed for speedy growth.
