Deputy Director, Fisheries Science and Management

This position serves as the Division of Marine Fisheries Deputy Director, Fisheries Science and Management (FS/M) and reports to the Division Director. The Deputy Director provides operational leadership and management to the Fisheries Science, License and Statistics, Fishery Management and Policy sections in establishing and implementing division and program operational goals to allow the division to meet its mission of ensuring sustainable fisheries and habitats for the benefit and health of the people of North Carolina. The Deputy Director assists the Director in working with the Marine Fisheries Commission, other fisheries management councils and commissions, and other stakeholders external to the division in establishing fisheries management policy. The Deputy Director is assigned leadership roles for special projects as the Director deems necessary. The Deputy Director (FS/M) will work closely with the Division of Marine Fisheries Deputy Director, Operations to ensure that the overall DEQ and Division goals are met.

• Directs Section Chiefs to ensure accomplishment of DEQ and division goals and appropriate application of federal and state laws and regulations.
• Manage day-to-day operational priorities of the Secretary, Director, Legislative members, and public, progress toward longer term programmatic or management goals.

Lead Field Instructor

Description:

Renowned for its accredited research-based undergraduate field programs, Wildlands Studies seeks candidates holding an MSc or PhD to be the Lead Instructor for new academic field programs. Students consistently report that their Wildlands Studies experience added depth and meaning to their on-campus classes and “changed their lives”. Wildlands Studies instructors enhance their own credentials with unique opportunities to teach in the field while engaging students in active research.

The Lead Instructor will direct students on an academically rigorous, wilderness-based six-week field study to explore habitats and cultures of specific USA-based and international locales. We are specifically seeking new international locations that will attract students and cover a wide variety of topics and terrain within our mission. We specifically welcome proposals for new locales in the Pacific Realm (Fiji, Tonga); Southeast Asia including India; Europe, specifically Portugal and the Azores, Croatia, Norway or other Arctic Mountain regions; and South America particularly Brazil and Uruguay. Students earn 5-15 quarter credits for three field classes covering Environmental Studies, Field Research Practices, and Environment and Culture. Lead Instructor is responsible for on-going seminars, lectures, instruction, guided field work and field methods, and assessment of all student work, as well as group dynamics and the overall well-being of participants. Requirements:

Knowledge and experience of field study location required. Applicants must have Masters degree in hand; PhD Candidates and/or completed PhD preferred. A qualified Lead Instructor will have experience leading field study programs and teaching at the undergraduate level, specifically upper division environmental studies classes; a good sense of humor, flexibility, patience, and understanding; be a physically fit experienced outdoorsperson capable of leading students on day hikes and multi-day overnight backpacking trips; a capable and skilled group facilitator able to spend 24 hours per day, 7 days per week with up to 16 students aged 18-23 for the duration of the program managing associated interpersonal dynamics; an accomplished logistical planner capable of managing the overarching and day-to-day logistics, program finances and communications; certified in First Aid and CPR (preferably WFR) and able to competently and confidently manage medical emergencies and other medical situations should they arise. We require our program staff to be able to easily transport students in vehicles. Individuals must have a clean driving record, manual transmission experience, knowledge and competence driving in international locations and, if needed, the ability to drive a right-hand drive vehicle on the left side of the road. Great Lakes Water Resource Technician

The Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering (BEE) at Cornell University is one of the largest programs of its kind, with a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students. It focuses on three core areas: education at undergraduate and graduate levels, research in biology and environmental challenges, and public outreach. Through these efforts, the department aims to advance knowledge and help society apply scientific solutions.

This is a full-time, in-person position based in Syracuse, New York. This is a one-year term position, with additional one-year terms pending performance and funding. Core hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with flexibility as needed.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct environmental field sampling of streams and lakes following established protocols and QA requirements
Calibrate, maintain, and operate field sampling equipment (e.g., multiparameter sondes)

Regional Biologist

The Southern Region of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU) is seeking an experienced Regional Biologist for south Louisiana. The biologist will work under the direction of the Manager of Conservation Programs for south Louisiana and become part of a team of biologists, engineers, and other professionals that are based out of Lafayette, Louisiana. The focus of this position will primarily be the enhancement and restoration of wetlands and associated habitats important to migrating waterfowl and other wetland dependent fish and wildlife species. This position will assist with implementing conservation projects on private and public lands in south Louisiana.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in a natural resources field—an advanced degree is desired.
Applicants must also have at least five years of relevant experience and be knowledgeable about wetland and waterfowl ecology and management.
A strong background in ornithology with an emphasis on waterfowl and other wetland dependent birds is desired.
Experience in providing technical assistance to landowners on how to better manage wetlands for waterfowl is also desired.
Related experience in soil and water conservation as it pertains to rice agriculture is preferred but not necessary.
Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.
Proven proposal/grant writing skills, project management capabilities, and wetland restoration and enhancement experience are necessary.
Familiarity with the region’s biological resources, local and regional environmental issues, and private and public stakeholders is beneficial.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter adept at finding, initiating, managing, and delivering wetland enhancement, restoration, acquisition, and protection projects with a focus on DU priority areas in south Louisiana.
This position will be responsible for project initiation and management.
Project initiation duties include identifying potential projects, developing/maintaining relationships with public and private partners, and obtaining funding from a wide variety of sources for project work. This also includes writing and submitting proposals to various agencies, foundations, and other funding sources to secure project funds.
Project management and delivery duties include coordinating with agency partners and other stakeholder groups, DU engineering staff, consultants, and regulatory agencies to ensure timely and on-budget delivery of projects.
This position will be responsible for developing project agreements, drafting reports, managing project budgets, providing technical assistance, and data entry.
Candidate must also assist with fundraising and outreach events, represent DU at wetland conservation venues/events, and help with other conservation activities.
Candidate would be required to establish and maintain relationships with key DU volunteers and development staff and provide DU management with timely communication on project work/issues.
Finally, candidate will assist communication staff with developing articles to promote and describe DU projects.

Assistant Marine Scientist

The successful candidate will join our Shellfish Research Team at the Marine Resources Research Institute to assist with our Section’s work related to molluscan ecology, oyster reef mapping, oyster restoration, living shorelines and shellfish aquaculture. Specific duties will include laboratory and field research, data collection and analysis, biological sample collection and data management, preparation of reports and presentations, authoring technical manuscripts, coordination and supervision of team personnel, proposal preparation, and budget management. Some projects will include work on multi-disciplinary teams.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A Ph.D. in field related to job duties. Writing skills, as evidenced by at least one (1) peer-reviewed publication
Preferred Qualifications

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in biology, marine science, or a closely related field. Individuals should have demonstrated abilities to conduct applied molluscan ecological research including experimental design, sample collection, data acquisition, management and analyses, as well as manuscript and report preparation. Experience working in tidal creeks and estuarine environments and knowledge of South Carolina oyster reef ecology preferred. Experience with population and community ecological analyses preferred as well. Publication record required; successful grant funding record preferred. Applicants must also have knowledge of current molluscan research needs and the capability to work independently as well as effectively on teams. Strong communication, leadership, quantitative, organizational, computer, writing and inter-personal skills required. Ability to swim, lift heavy objects and be comfortable working in the field on a year-round basis; ability to safely and effectively operate small (<24ft) vessels in inshore waters preferred.

District Professional Engineer

SUMMARY

This position administers Title 25, Chapter 102 of the Department of Environmental Protection Rules & Regulations of the Clean Streams Law involving earthmoving activity in Montgomery County to protect, reclaim and restore water quality. Main duties are associated with the review of NPDES permit applications. He/she also promote, conduct and coordinate environmental education and outreach.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs Post Construction Stormwater Management (PCSM) reviews of NPDES permit applications in accordance with Chapter 102.
Participate in NPDES pre-application meetings and coordination with the design engineer and applicants through the permit reviews.
Conceptual and technical evaluation of proposed Erosion and Sediment Control (E&S) Best Management Practices (BMPs) and Post Construction Stormwater Management (PCSM) BMPs.

Evaluate descriptive narrative including watershed, soil type, contours, surface water runoff calculations, and E&S/PCSM design specifications.
Attends pre-construction or complaint investigation meetings as needed.
Communication with landowners, municipal officials, state and federal agencies, consulting firms, developers, utilities, and conservation associations as needed.
Visual and hands-on inspection of entire tract of land to verify implementation and maintenance of E&S and PCSM BMPS.
Provides technical assistance to the public on conservation of soil and water resources.
Develop, coordinate, and complete various environmental education programs.
Provide environmental presentations and workshops for private and public sector.
Write newsletter articles for publication and provide presentations for the public.
Maintain required time keeping/tracking records and provide a written monthly report of activities to the District Manager.
Attend regularly scheduled training sessions, conferences, and meetings as assigned. Conducts general administrative duties and assists with other District programs.

Field Technician, Gulf Coast

The Atlanta Botanical Garden’s (ABG) Conservation & Research Department is seeking a Field Technician to assist with field work and data entry related to several projects located throughout the Florida panhandle and lower Alabama. This is a field-based position with the ability to work from home during data entry activities. This position has variable hours (up to 40 hours/week) depending on project needs and plant phenology. The position requires overnight trips of up to 4 nights at a time. Fuel, lodging, and meals are covered during these trips.

This is a temporary position beginning in early May and ending in September or October, upon completion of 987 hours

Key Responsibilities

This position works closely with the Gulf Coast Program Manager on plant conservation efforts in the Florida panhandle and Alabama. Tasks include but are not limited to:

Inventorying and monitoring of rare, threatened, endangered, and culturally significant in-situ plant populations across the Florida panhandle and lower Alabama
Searching for new populations of rare species
Assisting with field collection of seed, leaf tissue, cuttings, herbarium vouchers, and other plant materials using methods consistent with department protocols
Landowner outreach
Support field-related operations in and out of the field, including preparation for fieldwork, driving ABG or personal vehicles to and from field sites and ensuring that all equipment, data, and samples are organized at the end of fieldwork
Maintain and prepare data for reporting

Senior Aquarist

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for the day-to-day husbandry operations in the Aquarium. Primary responsibilities include the care and wellbeing of all animals under the facility’s care; maintenance of all habitats; and positive team approach within the Life Sciences Department.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Supervise and undertake daily operations within the Life Sciences Department to ensure highest level of safety, courtesy, education, efficiency and operational readiness at all times.

Hydrologist

Trout Unlimited seeks to hire a self-motivated and highly capable project manager to identify, plan, and implement projects to benefit aquatic resources, watershed health, and native and wild fish populations in Northern Colorado. The hydrologist will work cooperatively with partners of diverse backgrounds and interests to develop and implement a variety of projects. The project manager will represent Trout Unlimited (TU) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) in collaborative settings, actively and effectively participating in stakeholder groups to advocate for positive outcomes for coldwater fisheries.

The hydrologist position is responsible for planning and administering watershed-related projects and providing professional expertise in hydrology programs across the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and the Pawnee National Grasslands (ARP). The hired candidate will be employed by Trout Unlimited (TU) and will work directly with U.S. Forest Service (USFS) staff to support agency capacity on watershed restoration projects. TU and the U.S. Forest Service anticipate this position to be stationed at a District Office on the ARP.

The hydrologist will provide support for watershed restoration efforts on the ARP. This may include activities ranging from low-tech process-based restoration to large infrastructure projects with road and culvert improvements.

Desired Qualifications:

Minimum of a graduate degree in hydrology, biology, ecology, or a related field, or five years of relevant experience in watershed restoration, fluvial geomorphology or hydrology, biology, or a related field.
Experience working in post-fire landscapes and implementing projects to reduce impacts from wildfires.
Field work experience, including collection of field parameters and creation and operation of Survey 123 and Field Maps, familiarity with operating instrumentation (e.g., transducers, water quality probes, temperature and/or water quality loggers, etc.) for pre- and post-treatment monitoring.
Experience with state and federal environmental compliance permitting, such as NEPA and Clean Water Act 404 permits, a plus.
