Environmental Specialist

Coastal Research Engineer

Environmental Manager

The Environmental Manager (EM) reports directly to the Sr. Environmental Manager (Senior EM) assigned to their region and / or the Environmental Operations Director. At the discretion of the assigned Senior EM, the EM’s work activities are supervised, and specific duties are determined by the Senior EM. The EM is responsible for implementation of company policies and procedural plans related to all environmental media, including air, stormwater, groundwater, solid, and/or hazardous waste. The EM maintains regional facilities in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental laws, standards, and permits; and has responsibility for maintaining facility compliance with applicable environmental permit conditions.

This position has direct responsibility for conducting on-site fieldwork associated with sampling, monitoring, observing, and recording environmental data; and preparing reports, records, and plans required by regulatory permit, plan, or agreement. The EM assists in the overall planning, design, installation, and operation of pollution control equipment and associated metering and/or measuring devices. The EM delivers training programs and provides other advice to management on practical and necessary steps to prevent or abate pollution arising from operations and maintain compliance with regulatory requirements contained within a variety of environmental permits, plans and policies. The EM provides first line immediate environmental emergency responses to incidents, spills, releases, and accidents. The EM provides appropriate notifications to management and appropriate regulatory agencies and assists with site investigations and Remediation projects related to due diligence activities and other identified environmental issues.

This position operates within flexible parameters. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of environmental management, while providing the highest quality product safely, effectively, efficiently and in compliance with all applicable regulatory Requirements. Equipment & Maintenance

Ensures construction plans are reviewed to determine that pollution control considerations are adequate and provides technical supervision for construction and installation of pollution control equipment.

Works closely with maintenance department personnel to ensure proper management of maintenance-derived waste materials and appropriate permitting of maintenance equipment.
Inventory & Quality Control

Prepares and submits permit documents, reports, and records to regulatory agencies on time.

Maintains on-site records for all environmental regulatory Requirements and meets due dates for all associated submittals.

Maintains emergency response plans and operation and maintenance plans.

Position includes routine management of engineering contractors, environmental consultants, and other contractors. Supervision of pollution abatement equipment operators may be required as well.

Interpersonal Contacts:

Internal contacts include all levels of personnel, including senior management, to develop policies, recommend actions, discuss issues, and distribute information. External contacts are with legal and environmental consulting firms, government agencies, legislators and staff, trade associations, real estate brokers and developers, vendors, and private industries to gather information, resolve problems, and ensure regulatory compliance. Position does require effective communication and documentation skills, working closely with operations facility managers and other personnel in communicating environmental goals and compliance. Furthermore, ensuring an open and collaborative communication style and maintaining professional dialogue with key business partners (i.e., Regional Directors, Operation Managers, EHS peers, etc.) throughout the organization is essential to success.

Job Conditions:

Office and active field working environment including collection of samples for testing, general information gathering, and project management at various locations. It is necessary to be able to walk/climb in active industrial yards with uneven surfaces and to out-of-the-way areas. Must be comfortable with heights. Occasional exposure to inclement weather conditions and travel is required. Increased time spent involved in environmental issues at sites owned/operated by joint ventures and/or sister companies. Regional and domestic travel required. Position may have to respond to urgent situations on off hours and/or weekends and holidays.

Preference for person trained or certified in hazardous materials management, hazardous waste handling, site clean-up operations, and/or emergency response. Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental programs and regulations with approved sampling techniques and procedures. Strong analytical, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills required. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, environmental management systems, and environmental testing or analytical equipment. Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems; collect data; establish facts; draw valid conclusions in controlled situations; and read and understand engineering plans and specifications.

Watershed Restoration Engineer

As the Watershed Restoration Engineer, you will provide technical oversight for the completion of stormwater improvement projects to help restore local waterways as part of the Carroll County NPDES MS4 Permit. You will use your engineering expertise to manage restoration projects and ensure NPDES permit compliance. The work you do will support County agencies, municipalities and citizens within the goals and objectives of the Department.

Principal Engineer – Environmental Engineering

Duties

Managing a team of Senior Engineers responsible for the review/approval of engineering plans for residential subdivision and linear project development in the County, ensuring that plans comply with State and Federal requirements for erosion control and stormwater management, to include the Virginia Stormwater Management Program (VSMP) and Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act, as well as with the County’s Stormwater Management and Water Quality, Floodplain Management, and other applicable ordinances. Conferring with consulting engineers, developers, and contractors. Responding to inquiries or complaints from the public pertaining to erosion control and drainage issues. Developing and enhancing the skills of subordinates and coworkers. Performing other work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in civil/environmental engineering, including coursework in hydraulics/hydrology. Five years of increasingly responsible experience in civil/environmental engineering or closely related field; one year of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity preferred; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Professional Engineer license required. Strong PC skills and experience with hydraulic modeling software required. Excellent verbal/written communication skills and experience in working with engineers, developers, contractors, and the public are essential. Certification by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) as a Stormwater Management Plan Reviewer is required within the first 12 months of employment. Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Record must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date. Environmental Engineer or Scientist

Hydrologist II

The Kent Conservation District (KCD), a governmental subdivision of the State of Delaware, is seeking applicants for the contractual services position of Hydrologist II with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), Division of Waste and Hazardous Substances- Director’s Office.

JOB SUMMARY

The Hydrologist II supports Delaware’s efforts to protect its water and soil resources from the impacts of emerging contaminants, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The successful candidate will participate in the Delaware’s PFAS team, assist with data analysis to prioritize projects, and support/liaise with the Department of Public Health and other agencies as required. Duties include environmental field sample collection, data analysis, report generation, coordination of point of use treatment deployment activities, and coordination of various logistics & response activities. The successful candidate will plan/coordinate meetings and events with key internal and external stakeholders as needed. They will also liaise with various laboratories that perform PFAS/emerging contaminant analyses for Delaware and will ensure that reported data is properly managed in our database.

Under limited supervision, coordinate logistics and operations that support the needs of the sea otter rehabilitation and research program, and USCA coastal ecosystems research goals, including logistical and planning support for sea otter rehabilitation operations both onsite and with partners, database management, permitting and compliance, grant requests and reports, budgeting and accounting, and event planning. Perform other duties as required.

Core Activities:

Perform scientific data entry in a variety of software, including those in specialized formats like TRACKS. Work with sea otter care, research, and veterinary staff.
Review data entry for accuracy and conduct other data organization activities (e.g., creating data subsets, etc), as directed.
Draft, revise, and renew all relevant permit applications and reports with feedback from the Sea Otter Program Manager to include those required for surrogacy transport, captive placement, research, USDA and AZA permits. Maintain multiple deadlines and requirements for renewal to ensure continuous and uninterrupted compliance.
Process contracts, purchase orders, and vendor agreements; conduct purchasing of supplies including otter food and research equipment and manage invoicing; track expenses and produce regular reports as directed by the Sea Otter Program Manager.
Coordinate budget information needs for grant requests.
Track expenses and produce monthly reports to align annual budgets for SORAC and Coastal Ecosystem research programs with work plans and strategies.
Provide administrative support for the expansion and maintenance of surrogacy partnerships and otter care operations including the administration of MOUs, communication strategies, and related construction and facility requests.
Plan and support facilitation of online and in-person meetings/events related to recovery and reintroduction of sea otters. Create agendas, manage invitations, take notes, and follow up on action items, in collaboration with Sea Otter Program Manager.
Assist the sea otter research and program staff in planning and facilitating the annual volunteer appreciation event. Coordinate with volunteers services, aquarium events, and other department staff as needed in implementation.
Organize partner and VIP/donor visits to the SORAC program facilities. Coordinate logistics with staff from Guest Experience, Animal Care, and other relevant departments.
Coordinate needs associated with short-term staff, including interns, fellows, and others (assist with recruitment, liaison with relevant Aquarium divisions and partner institutions, manage space and technical needs, assist with onboarding and separation, etc.).
Represent the department on internal groups and committees, including those related to planning, budgeting, facilities, and operations.
Reserve lodging, vehicles, and schedule other activities for off-site sea otter research and operations.
Develop and maintain a calendar of program-relevant research and program events. Coordinate with departmental events.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSAs):

Minimum 5 years’ experience in program or project management
Minimum 3 years’ experience in accounting and creating and tracking budgets
Experience in event planning
Experience in compliance tracking and reporting, particularly scientific permitting
Interest in and knowledge of ocean conservation
Expertise in project, data, and budget management programs and software
Expertise in scientific data entry and quality assurance and control skills
Excellent organizational and communication skills
Excellent collaborative skills, especially in working with and maintaining positive relationships with internal colleagues and external partners
Ability to work independently and within teams with a high degree of self-motivation, productivity, and dependability
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

Hourly Compensation Range:

$27.50 – $31.73 USD per hour. Starting rate will vary based on previous experience and relevant skills/knowledge set.
