Postdoctoral Researcher, Marine Sediment Science

Position: The Chemical and Physical Ecology Program at Mote Marine Laboratory seeks a research scientist in Marine Sediment Science focused on the influence of terrestrial nitrate in submarine groundwater seeps on water chemistry and severe blooms of the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis. The applicant will study groundwater seepage where limestone aquifer strata intersect the southwest Florida shelf, either diffuse or via karst features, and how this may contribute to the marine nitrogen cycle, especially in regard to the role of dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium in benthic sediment. This research will build on the previous findings of Mote scientists working in this area. The research scientist will be expected to complete the proposed research involving field sediment and water collections and laboratory experiments, develop collaborations with other internal and external scientists, and publish research. This position will benefit from experience in enzyme-mediated nitrogen chemistry, ability to work with large datasets, and a strong background in experimental design and statistical analysis. Training in scientific scuba diving is desirable but not mandatory. The incumbent will be mentored by the manager of the Chemical and Physical Ecology and Ocean Acidification Programs, Dr. Emily Hall, and will receive additional mentoring from both internal and external scientists.

Mote Background: Mote is celebrating nearly 70 years as one of the few remaining independent, non-profit international marine research laboratories. The Mote research enterprise has over 25 diverse research programs, an array of STEM education/outreach programs, and an aquarium featuring working laboratories with more than 100 marine species. Mote currently has more than 40 PhD-level scientists, nearly 300 staff and approximately 1300 volunteers located on its main campus in Sarasota and across seven additional campuses/facilities, including a state- of-the-art 200-acre marine and freshwater aquaculture research park, and a 19,000 square foot International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration in the Florida Keys. Work on a new 110,000 square foot Mote Science Education Aquarium is nearing completion.

Application: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in marine chemistry, biogeochemistry, or similar field. This is a full-time position for up to 3 years (pending acceptable performance) and includes an expected initial annual salary of approximately $60,000, health insurance with family options, and benefits including an opt-in retirement plan with employer matching, leaves for holidays, illness, and vacation, and other benefits. The Research Position will also have established researchers assigned to serve as a Mentors. The position will be for a period of three years, assuming appropriate annual progress.

Environmental Coordinator

The Karluk Environmental Coordinator will operate the daily operations of the tribal environmental office and work closely with the Administrator to identifying environmental issues and program needs in the community. This is a temporary, one-year grant-funded position, but can lead to other opportunities within Kodiak Area Native Association.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Attend online monthly Kodiak Tribal Environmental Leaders and Professional (KELP) and quarterly Kodiak Tribal Environmental Consortium (KTEC) meetings.
Research programs and develop relationships with staff at EPA, ADEC and Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium.
Encourage environmental awareness in community through community bulletin board postings with a focus on solid waste and water quality.
Work with Tribal Administrator, Landfill Coordinator, Environmental Manager, ADEC and Council to develop a draft Integrated Waste Management Plan (IWMP).
Develop basic knowledge of solid and hazardous waste management issues and resources through internet research, local training opportunities and conference sessions.
Participate in Backhaul Alaska Project, including training, inventories and staging e-wastes, batteries and bulbs; pickups will be arranged by KANA and depended on funding
Conduct a Village Clean Up/Collection event with at least 20 participants with a focus on environmental issues associated with waste.
Work with Tribal Administrator to update old Gap Narrative to serve as the Tribal Priorities component of an FY25-30 EPA-Tribal Environmental Plan (ETEP); will work with Council to begin Environmental Inventory, select FY25 GAP focus areas and develop the ETEP.
Develop basic knowledge of solid and hazardous waste management issues and resources, water and water quality issues and climate change and erosion issues through internet research, local training opportunities and conference sessions.
Attend online HAZWOPER 40 hour or refresher course and Backhaul Alaska Training
Attend meeting with KANA direct supervisor, EPA Alaska General Assistance Program (GAP) Training and Alaska Tribal Conference on Environmental Management (ACTEM); will require travel to Kodiak and Anchorage.

Environmental Specialist

Environmental Specialists apply scientific theory and methods to identify, research, and resolve environmental issues in the areas of regulatory compliance, public health, environmental health and pollution prevention.

Environmental Specialist is a single class with two levels: Environmental Specialist (Level II) and Environmental Specialist (Level I). The level at which initial appointments are made and when advancements occur are at the discretion of the appointing authority. Incumbents may advance from Level I to Level II, if they have: (1) met the minimum and special qualifications, and (2) have demonstrated the ability to perform the responsibilities required at the higher performance level.

The County of Sacramento’s Environmental Management Department consists of two divisions, Environmental Compliance and Environmental Health. Environmental Analyst – Water Quality Division

Seeking a full-time Environmental Analyst to facilitate the implementation of various water-related initiatives to help the states of the Northeast preserve and advance water quality.

What You’ll Do

As a NEIWPCC Environmental Analyst, you will:

  • Manage a variety of projects related to Water Quality Standards (WQS), nutrient and numeric water quality standards, mercury, Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDLs), Clean Water Act 303(d) national listing, and related topics, and provide leadership for workgroups on these topics.
  • Develop and administer work plans, budgets, and contract/grant amendments, and serve as project manager for the Long Island Nitrogen Action Plan (LINAP), which includes the supervision of regional staff.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners on cross-cutting issues, develop and review Quality Assurance Project Plans as needed, maintain appropriate webpages on NEIWPCC’s website, and assist with the development of water quality-related education and outreach materials.

Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a passion and interest in preserving and advancing water quality. Ideally, the candidate will have:

  • A master’s degree in environmental studies, public policy, public health, biology, chemistry, or related field, and have at least five years of related technical or professional experience.
  • Experience working with a broad range of stakeholders in implementing environmental programs.
  • Knowledge and experience with aspects of water quality, watershed management, and federal environmental laws and regulations is required.
  • Program Management experience with developing, managing, and tracking project budgets, schedules, and deliverables to ensure projects are completed on time according to policy, grant agreements, and best management practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, strong computer skills and the ability to perform basic statistical analysis is desired.

Logistics

This full-time position will work 7.5 hours per day and is based out of NEIWPCC’s Headquarters office in Lowell, MA. Duties will be performed largely in an office setting with occasional travel, for which a valid driver’s license and private means of transportation is required. Principal Environmental Engineer

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for managing planning and design projects related to the rehabilitation and capital improvement of wastewater facilities and infrastructure. Engineering Technician

Job Summary/ Objective:

Performs professional work in the review and inspection of land development and public improvements; assures compliance with County ordinances as well as State and Federal Laws. Performs responsible professional, technical and administrative work in support of the erosion and sediment control and storm water management requirements of County Ordinances.

Essential Functions:

Review erosion and sediment control plans, storm water management plans, mitigation plans, and building permit applications for compliance with the County’s Water Protection Ordinance and State design standards and guidelines.
Perform field inspections of roads, drainage improvements, grading, stormwater management (SWM) facilities, and erosion and sediment control (ESC) measures.

Working knowledge of computers, tablets, Microsoft Office Suite tools, and other tools essential to the effective performance of this position.
Maintain effective professional relationships with contractors, developers, and the public.
Effectively read and interpret construction documents, including ESC plans, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans, Pollution Prevention Plans, and SWM plans.
Express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
Effectively enforce VSMP/VESCP program inspection requirements.

Required Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with coursework in civil engineering or construction.
Minimum two years of experience in site development, site design, or surveying.
Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) ESC Plan Reviewer and ESC Inspector certifications required within 6months of start date.
DEQ SWM Plan Reviewer and SWM Inspector certifications required within 12 months of start date.

Preferred Qualifications/Certifications:

Possession of a valid appropriate driver’s permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
