Garden Manager

The Garden Manager provides the leadership and management necessary to maintain and advance the horticulture program of a 42-acre public garden. They oversee the day-to-day activities of the horticulture staff by providing supervision, training, and coordination of work assignments. Additional responsibilities include administrative duties, promotion and interpretation of the garden to the community and beyond, and the operation of heavy machinery and power equipment. The Garden Manager is required to occasionally work weekends, evenings, and holidays, as requested, to fulfill their responsibilities. This position reports to the Stoneleigh Director.

Primary Responsibilities

Manage all garden activities and projects on-site, including ecological horticulture, turf, arboriculture, and nursery programs. Supervise, train, develop, and evaluate horticulture staff and interns.
Oversee the annual horticulture operating budget and associated administrative tasks.
Lead weekly garden task scheduling and implementation, as well as the planning and managing of special projects.
Cultivate positive relationships, build support, and elevate general understanding of Stoneleigh’s and Natural Lands’ missions with guests, supporters, and the community through the participation in garden events, classes, tours, volunteer programs and membership activities.
Lead integrated pest management program; monitor and inspect plants for health deficiencies and problems, ascertain proper corrective measures and apply appropriate pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, plant selections or cultural practices.
With managerial approval, source, procure and purchase plants, supplies and materials such as trees, shrubs, seeds, mulch, soil and garden tools and equipment.
Supervise the plant collections management program.
Operate tractors, trucks, mini-excavators, lifts, and other heavy machinery. Also operate standard garden equipment such as chainsaws, blowers, mowers, and tillers, and perform heavy lifting as required.
Monitor for unauthorized use of the property, including vandalism and access after-hours.

Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, or related field and 3+ years of relevant work experience with 2 years in a supervisory role.

Agriculture Technician

The Monacan Soil and Water Conservation District is hiring a full-time Agricultural Technician serving Powhatan and Goochland Counties. This position will focus on providing administrative and technical support for implementing agricultural best management cost-share programs with farmers and landowners.

Applicant should be comfortable working with farmers and enjoy working outside as needed. Good organizational skills and attention to detail for file management and data entry are critical. Applicant will be required to earn conservation planning certifications.

Rangeland Ecologist

The Rangeland Ecologist joins a dynamic team of local conservation partners in collaborative conservation work across north-central Montana. This position provides range ecology and wildlife biology expertise and technical assistance to landowners, government agencies, and other conservation partners for mixed-grass and sagebrush habitat conservation. The rangeland ecologist will function as the leader of a Candidate Conservation Agreement with Assurances (CCAA) program managed by The Nature Conservancy, in partnership with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, for Greater Sage-grouse and four species of grassland birds. CCAA planning and delivery components include making landowner contacts, performing resource inventories, developing rangeland resource and ranch management plans, completing written agreements, and compliance monitoring. Stewardship projects done in conjunction with partner groups include mesic restoration projects, crested wheatgrass improvements, grazing systems on native range, and grassland reseedings across public and private land. The Rangeland Ecologist position is part of the Conservancy’s Northern Great Plains Program in Montana and works with other Conservancy stewardship staff based at the Matador Ranch near Malta and conservation staff in Montana, as well as conservation organizations, federal and state land management agencies, and research scientists. The Rangeland Ecologist works closely with rancher-led community collaboratives. This position is supervised by the Montana Northern Great Plains Director and supervises the Grassland Research Coordinator.

Responsibilities and Scope:
• Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development.
• Develops and fosters relationships with federal and state agencies, tribes, landowners, and non-profit organizations on projects, funding, and outreach.

• Serves as project lead for Candidate Conservation Agreement with Assurances program for greater-sage grouse and declining grassland songbirds.

Director of Land Preservation and Natural Resources

Research Assistant Professor in Wildlife Ecology

Non-tenure-track faculty position at the research assistant professor level, with the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Texas A&M University-Kingsville. This is a 12-month research-focused position that will address how environmental factors influence cervids. The results will contribute to our understanding of natural and anthropogenic selection, the design of harvest plans, and ultimately the sustainable management of natural resources. Main duties will be to conduct quantitative analyses as part of a long-term study on populations of wild white-tailed deer and elk. The chosen candidate will have the intellectual freedom to explore additional research topics of interest. Additional opportunities may include the ability to serve as Principal Investigator (PI) on grants, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and contribute to our ongoing fieldwork in South Texas.

Responsibilities:

Conduct data analyses for long-term data sets on elk and deer

Required Qualifications

Priority 1 – Horticulture Leadership

Provide leadership to the horticulture specialists in the implementation of the plant programming across the entire campus.

Collaboratively design, coordinate, and implement all plant displays in your area of responsibility in alignment with overall goals for the planted campus.

Regional Biologist

Ducks Unlimited, Inc., the world’s leading wetland and waterfowl conservation organization, seeks an experienced biologist to join our South Atlantic Conservation Team. As a Regional Biologist you will work with a team of biologists, engineers, and land protection professionals to identify, develop, fund and implement wetlands restoration and enhancement projects across the South Atlantic states of South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia to support DU’s waterfowl and wetlands conservation mission.

Assist with fundraising, development, and outreach events, represent DU at wetland conservation venues, and help with other conservation activities.
Establish and maintain relationships with key DU volunteers and fundraising staff and provide DU management with timely communication on project progress and challenges
Assist communication staff with developing information to educate and promote DU’s wetland conservation efforts

SCHEDULE: This is a full-time, salaried position. Working hours will be a balance of office and field work, with the approximate allocation dependent on scheduling, seasonal priorities, and other factors. The position is predominantly office-based with frequent travel required, including overnight and out of state trips. Other positions may be available based upon experience and education.

This position will report to the Manager of Conservation Programs with a preferred location in our South Atlantic Field Office in Hanahan, SC, with potential location flexibility for exceptional candidates.

Agriculture Technican

The Agriculture Technician serves to assist agricultural operations in identifying and remediating pollutant sources and environmental risks. The technician can expect to work with a diverse array of clients, commodity types, and business structures on a range of projects such as emergency plans, composting facilities, and grazing management. Clients will work with the technician to ensure they comply with the Generally Accepted Agricultural and Management Practices and be evaluated through the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program (MAEAP) verification process. Once verified, the technician continues to serve as a contact point for the operation for pollution events, other environmental concerns, or for continued participation in other conservation programs.

This position is currently funded through a grant from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) to carry out MAEAP activities. While funding for this grant is contingent upon annual renewal, the Allegan Conservation District intends to continue funding this position in the case that grant funding lapses.

WORKING LOCATION AND CONDITIONS

The position will be based in the Allegan Conservation District Office in Allegan, Michigan. Workdays are generally Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm and time is split between office work and field work. Occasional evenings or weekends will be required for workshops, meetings, or major events. The incumbent will frequently be on farms, which may involve traversing uneven terrain or wetlands, working around livestock, manure, and farm waste, and working in a wide range of weather conditions. The incumbent may work in the vicinity of crews using hand tools, power equipment, and heavy machinery.

COMPENSATION
The MAEAP Technician is a full time, hourly position starting at $21/hour with increases dependent on experience and completed trainings. Benefits include paid federal holidays, paid time off, retirement, healthcare, and hybrid work schedule.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

· Coordinate all aspects of MAEAP in Allegan County and be fully familiar with, and adhere to, relevant grant agreements and guidelines for conducting the program.

· Conduct environmental risk assessments for agricultural lands.

· Assist clients in identifying, planning, and implementing mitigation measures to reduce risks and meet MAEAP verification requirements.

· Plan and conduct field days and other educational events that promote conservation practices, highlight MAEAP and other environmental assistance programs, and promote farmer-to-farmer learning.

· Assist producers in responding to Right to Farm complaints if they arise, to bring them into conformance with Michigan’s Generally Accepted Agricultural Management Practices (GAAMPS).

· Maintain accurate records, in an online database as well as on paper, and a well-organized filing system for those records.

· Work closely with the United States Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS) and other partners to leverage federal, state, and local resources for farmers.

· Collaborate with Conservation District staff and external partners to promote MAEAP and educate diverse audiences on the importance of resource protection.

· Promote conservation practices and programs through displays and booths, newsletter articles, group presentations, demonstrations, public service announcements, news releases, radio programs, social media, and other means.

· Perform other essential activities as required by the MDARD grant agreement or as assigned by the Executive Director or Board of Directors.

QUALIFICATIONS

· A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in agriculture or natural resources management from an accredited college or university. Relevant experience working in on-farm crop or livestock production may be considered in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.

· Strong understanding of farm operations and issues.
