The Director of Sustainability champions campus sustainability by integrating climate action and resilience throughout the campus community. This dynamic role holds a range of responsibilities across policies, operations, infrastructure and culture. Responsibilities often include fostering a culture of sustainability among students, faculty and staff; identifying and prioritizing areas for institutional sustainability initiatives; planning and developing long and short range sustainability programs; engaging with institutional leaders to foster sustainability broadly across campus departments and offices; networking with peer institutions to maintain current working knowledge of sustainability best practices on college campuses; and, representing the College at regional and national sustainability meetings.

The Director of Sustainability serves as an important member of the College’s administrative staff by leading the Office of Sustainability. The Director of Sustainability can expect to serve as the internal leader and “go toâ€ expert for sustainability, monitoring emerging trends, programs and issues, and communicating and educating others on sustainability topics.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Campus-Wide

Collaborate with faculty, staff, students, administrators and campus committees on campus sustainability projects and environmental education.
Lead the Office of Sustainability, which provides centralized coordination, encouragement, and accountability to foster a campus culture that “cares for our common home.”
Chair the Presidential Task Force for the Environment which includes constituents across campus including students, faculty and staff.
Lead the effort to implement the College’s updated climate action plan as well as the 2040 carbon neutrality goal.
Sit on campus-wide committees, bringing the sustainability perspective.
Liaise with sustainability professionals at other education institutions, within the AJCU, local businesses, governments and the Worcester community to share experience and practices and promote collaboration.
Serve as the central point of contact for any and all interfaces with members of the campus community on the subject of sustainability.

Academic

Support the academic mission of the College and present at campus-wide staff, faculty, and student meetings and classes.
Act as the liaison between academics and operations in order to create a living laboratory environment for students around sustainability topics.
Aid in the implementation and development of educational materials as requested.
Provide support to students, faculty, and staff for the development of course content, academic projects, presentations and experiential opportunities related to sustainability.
Collaborate closely with the new Department of Environmental Studies.

Facilities and Operations

In collaboration with Facilities Department staff, provide direction for decarbonization and sustainability planning, which may include sitting on capital project teams.
Lead campus education and outreach efforts about waste reduction and diversion.
Work closely with Environment Services staff to develop and manage waste reduction and diversion programs, including the residential freezer composting program, end of the semester move-out diversion project, toner cartridge recycling and textile recycling.
Conduct the annual greenhouse gas inventory for the Climate Leadership Network requirements.
Find and apply for grant funding and incentives as needed, including at the federal and state level as well as private opportunities.

Student Engagement

Direct multiple co-curricular programs, including the Sustainability Project Developer program, Green Influencer Program, the Green Living Certification and the Pothos Project.
Hire, train and supervise student employees dedicated to campus sustainability efforts.
Support student organizations, ranging from advocacy to gardening.
Advise students involved with Purple Goes Green Week.
Direct the Holy Cross Green Fund, including recruiting prospective applicants, advising project leaders and advising the student manager.
Collaborate with the Division of Student Affairs on student programming that relates to sustainability.
Direct institutional sustainability activities as developed.

Employee Engagement

Support the employee affinity group (Biting Into Thoughtful Environmentalism) focused on sustainability.
Coordinate a community supported agriculture (CSA) site during the spring and fall semesters.
Direct the Green Office Program, supporting College units implementing sustainability practices.

Communications

Enhance campus wide communication and outreach about campus sustainability by building a relationship with the College’s Marketing and Communication team.
Design and disseminate the internal sustainability newsletter.
Manage the official PurpleGoesGreen Instagram account and the sustainability GroupMe account.
Monitor the monthly printing reports with the support of ITS.
Represent Holy Cross at regional and national campus sustainability meetings.

Administrative

Oversee the budget for the Office of Sustainability, including forecasting, tracking and verification.
Steward the Pepsi Co. grant funding that is dedicated to campus sustainability projects.
Provide supervisory guidance for staffing levels, training programs and in planning the use of resources to ensure that the College achieves sustainability goals.
Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities and activities may change at any time with or without notice.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience; advanced coursework a plus.
Five to eight years of experience in management, sustainability, or related programs required; experience in academic setting desired.
Knowledge of sustainability theories and practices and local, national and global sustainability and environmental initiatives; familiarity with the networks of organizations (governmental, non-governmental and academic) involved in advancing sustainability policy and action.
Excellent communication skills including writing, public speaking and computing skills.
Exhibits sound judgment and professionalism in all aspects of the position. Able to differentiate between conflicting priorities and issues to identify underlying causes. Manager of Sustainability

The Bentley University Office of Sustainability is seeking an experienced sustainability professional to help support the university in implementing its Sustainability Climate Action Plan and Bentley’s mission. The Manager of Sustainability will be responsible for managing and maintaining strong relationships for the office, leveraging strong communication skills and thriving in a dynamic work environment. This person will support the office in managing the day-to-day work of the Office of Sustainability. The manager will be responsible for overseeing much of the office’s project management, student career development and will contribute to the thoughtful leadership for many of the exciting programs run through the Office of Sustainability. Essential Duties

Provide project management to essential Office of Sustainability programs including:

Leading the implementation and project management of Energy and Building Systems and Lifelong Learning and Engagement goals of Bentley’s Sustainability Climate Action Plan.
Co-leading the Student Sustainability Leadership program (5-7 student interns) which includes supervision and mentoring.
Partnering with Facilities Management to achieve Bentley’s energy reduction and renewable energy goals. Including, leading the implementation of an electrification study completed in Spring 2024.
Giving guest lectures on sustainability topics in undergraduate and graduate classes and in other venues.
Chairing committees and facilitating meetings.
Co-advising the student group Students for Sustainable Business.
Representing the Office of Sustainability in all capacities across campus.

The Manager of Sustainability will report to the Director of Sustainability.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in an environmental science, sustainability, sustainability and business, policy, ESG, behavior change or related field.
Two to four years of work experience in the fields listed above.
Excellent project management skills, the ability to manage multiple competing priorities (including budget and timeline) in a rapidly changing environment.

Senior Program Officer

The Green & Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI) is a 501(c)3 entity with the mission to address the social determinants of health, opportunity and equity through the creation of healthy, safe and energy efficient homes. By delivering a standard of excellence in its work, GHHI aims to eradicate the negative health impacts of unhealthy housing and unjust policies for children, seniors and families to ensure better health, economic and social outcomes in historically disinvested communities – with an emphasis on communities of color.

The Green & Healthy Homes Initiative is one of 11 organizations selected by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to serve as an Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Grantmaker. GHHI received $50 million to provide subgrants to community-based nonprofits and other eligible subrecipients in EPA Region 3 for assessment, planning, and project development activities. Grantmakers will alleviate much of the burden that the federal grants process places on small, resource-constrained community-based organizations supporting underserved communities and marginalized populations. The 11 Grantmakers are a combination of community-based nonprofit organizations in potential partnerships with a federally recognized Tribal government or an institution of higher education. Grantmakers will design competitive application and submission processes, award environmental justice subgrants, implement a tracking and reporting system, provide resources and support to communities, all in collaboration with EPA’s Office of Environmental Justice and External Civil Rights.

Position Overview

The Senior Program Officer for Strategic Operations will support the EPA Region 3 Thriving Communities Grantmaker (TCGM) project. The TCGM Project, in collaboration with the EPA, will award $40 million in EPA funding, flowing from the Inflation Reduction Act, to fund eligible projects in historically disinvested communities throughout EPA’s Region 3. To further ensure equity and transparency, the Project includes a dedicated Advisory Board comprised of 10+ organizations which will provide outreach support, applicant engagement, and ensure equitable, transparent project implementation. To ensure subrecipients’ technical assistance needs are met, the Project will also include a dedicated team of technical assistance partners with subject matter expertise congruous to the projects selected to receive TCGM subgrants. This position will support the start-up, three-year project strategy, ongoing operations, and subrecipient grants support. This position will work to ensure that barriers are lowered for applicants and subrecipients, that subrecipients are adequately supported with capacity building and technical assistance, and that there is strong coordination between the project team, partners, networks, and the EPA Region 3 TCTAC center. This position will report to the Senior Vice President for Thriving Communities, for the duration of the three-year project period.

Support the Senior Vice President for Thriving Communities and project team in:

People Management

Manage a team of four Program Officers. These Program Officers will lead Grant Management Teams for each subrecipient and will provide support, provide technical assistance, monitor grants, and ensure requirements are met for compliance.

Project Management

Develop, launch, and provide ongoing management of the project management tracking and reporting system.
Establish process for Grant Management Team composition to support subrecipients.
Create and manage a knowledge library to support the diverse set of subrecipients.
Support ongoing operational management of the Thriving Communities Grantmaker project.

Support ongoing monitoring and reporting of grant activities.
Support ongoing use of the grants management system, ensuring that the system is used to support various grant management processes, including but not limited to applications, review, award, pre-award readiness, grant monitoring, and reporting.

Support feedback processes to facilitate Advisory Board engagement throughout the project.

Energy Engineer Intern

Energy Engineer Intern: Responsible for aggregating and analyzing building data in order to generate recommendations and client consultation reports to help clients make their buildings better. Provide analysis of client’s energy & utility data, and assist Applied Building Insights (ABI) team members with data analysis and reports.

– Collect and aggregate building data sources (HVAC, energy, water, etc.) and assist Optimization Engineers with analysis and development of operational and efficiency improvements in buildings.

Senior Environmental Specialist

The New England Senior Environmental Specialist is responsible for supporting the New England Environmental Sustainability Director to drive achievement of National Grid’s environmental sustainability goals across the US business, with a specific focus on New England.

This role is important for ensuring the New England (NE) business unit is positioned to deliver on these goals by –
1) maintaining up-to-date internal and external greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting, reporting, and compliance, in alignment with our corporate Responsible Business Charter and various external mandatory and voluntary commitments
2) collaborating with team members and stakeholders across the New England business to update and embed environmental commitments and ambitions into business operations, plans, and governance structures
3) operating efficiently through supporting development of in-house tools and projects
4) sharing industry best practices through engagement with peer organizations
Key Accountabilities

1. Environmental Sustainability Performance Management
a. Responsible for calculating and distributing NE performance reporting updates on GHG emissions reductions performance compared to plans
b. Partner with key stakeholders to support the management of the GHG inventory spreadsheets and databases for the NE business by collecting and assessing data from across the business and calculating business-specific emissions for scopes 1, 2, and 3
c. Contribute to GHG reporting, accounting methodology documentation and testing as part of annual Responsible Business Report data verification and publication
d. Support external regulatory, mandatory and voluntary GHG reporting and compliance efforts (including EPA, MA DEP, CDP and others) through data calculations and summaries

3. Sustainability Program & Project Management
a. Support in-house sustainability programs and data systems, which may include emissions calculation and reporting tools, maintaining file sharing platforms

4. Peer Engagement and Best Practice Development

Climate Campaign Associate

The Southern Environmental Law Center is hiring a new Climate Campaign Associate in either our Birmingham, AL. or Charleston, SC. offices, although other SELC offices can be considered. SELC’s strategic plan has three core pillars: Climate Change reversal, Environmental Justice and producing national solutions from our work protecting the South. This individual will join our Climate Initiative, reporting to our Climate Initiative Leader. At its core, the focus of this position will be defining and driving forward climate policy campaigns and advancing climate policies in target States. This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly successful, nationally recognized organization that is effectively addressing some of the most pressing and challenging environmental issues throughout the South and the nation.

SELC has a hybrid work model that offers employees the flexibility to work remotely up to two days per week. This is a full-time, exempt, three-year term position. All employees must reside in our region. SELC will provide relocation reimbursement for those relocating for an SELC position.
Primary Responsibilities:

Create state opportunity landscape assessments to advance climate policies in target states, mapping existing and potential partner organization capacity and related priorities, key stakeholders and decision makers, potential new partners, leverage points, resonant messaging, target audience strategies, and more.   
Develop one to two potential climate campaign concepts with recommended strategy and tactics in the target states. Each concept will be developed in partnership with state teams to determine whether and how to move forward.  
Provide project management support for target campaigns. In some instances, participate in and directly manage the resulting advocacy.  In others, coordinate with the state program advocates and coalition partners primarily handling that advocacy. 
Explore opportunities for additional research on climate-related topics to support campaign goals and elevate issue visibility and SELC thought leadership, working with program teams and Communications.   
Advise program staff in state offices on climate priorities and opportunities.  
Participate as a thought partner with program staff in developing advocacy strategies. Possible areas of policy work include decarbonization of TVA, implementation of federal climate funding and incentives, defense against regional gas growth, state and local resilience policies, and clean transportation.  
Identify new partnerships and build and participate in coalition efforts to support climate goals. 
Build and cultivate strong relationships with key decision-makers including public officials and staff, partners and other external stakeholders. Coordinate externally with partner organizations and allies to advance climate campaign objectives.  Attend and represent SELC in meetings among partner groups as appropriate.   
When appropriate, chronicle and analyze campaign activities to capture and share lessons learned for the benefit of future strategic campaigns.

Environment and Resiliency Intern

Sustainability Coordinator

Coordinate and implement student outreach programs including: Penn Green Pre-Orientation programming, New Student Orientation sustainability efforts, RA/GA training, and other programs as created. Assist the Sustainability Director in the implementation of Penn Sustainability’s communications strategy. Coordinate and implement the Green Living Program. Work closely with Residential Services and others to embed the Green Living Certification into the student experience at Penn. Track progress and incentives for participation.
Coordinate and implement the Green Office Certification program. Manage receipt and review of applications, provide sample policies, and arranging for presentation of signed and framed certificates. Work with offices across Penn to certify spaces, provide guidance on completing the checklist and update the checklist to ensure relevancy and impact.
Coordinate and implement sustainability annual events and campaigns including the 30×30 challenge, Earth Week events, Creating Canopy, Community Martin Luther King Jr. Environmental Justice events, Climate Week events and others as needed.
Assist in the development of newsletter content, website articles, maintain email lists, and develop internal communications for sustainability-related events and announcements as needed. Write and edit sustainability content for internal and external audiences. Work in partnership with communication professionals from across Penn to gather sustainability-related content to advance and highlight Penn’s sustainability efforts.
Support various sustainability committees and projects in service of Penn’s Climate and Sustainability Action Plan goals. Serve as point person for student groups and attend and support student groups as needed.
Manage academic year and summer interns focused on sustainability outreach and communication programs and projects.
Coordinate and implement Penn’s faculty/staff Eco-Reps programs by scheduling meetings, handling meeting logistics, and managing list serve of participants. Manage communications such as Red Day notification, weather-related initiatives, and seasonal change messaging. Assist with and provide organizational support for Green Teams.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Arts and 2 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Environmental or sustainability management major is strongly preferred.

This position supports Penn’s Climate and Sustainability Action Plan by providing outreach, communications, project management, logistical, and scheduling support for the Sustainability Office. The selected candidate must be able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multi-faceted setting, and be capable of handling several ongoing projects simultaneously with limited supervision. Background in environmental sustainability and higher education management is a plus.

The Sustainability team is focused on meeting Uber’s public commitments to reach net zero emissions (Mobility & Delivery) and zero unnecessary packaging waste (Delivery).

We’re accelerating the switch to electric vehicles for drivers & couriers, addressing challenges with EV charging, improving our ride offerings like Uber Green and Comfort Electric, making sustainable packaging more attainable for merchants & eaters, and more. Our work touches every corner of Uber’s business.
