We are currently seeking an Attorney who will work within the Research & Policy division. The division engages with government, nongovernmental, and private sector stakeholders to help them improve the legal and institutional frameworks governing sustainable development at the international, national, and subnational levels. Current initiatives cover a wide range of topics, from educational programs on the Clean Water ActÔÇÖs total maximum daily load program, to educating judges about the latest climate science, to the sustainability of small-scale fisheries in Southern Africa, to tracking and disseminating recent movement at the state and federal levels relating to environmental justice; and these initiatives involve varying tasks, from in-depth research to convening small- and large-scale events.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Serve as a subject matter expert and perform extensive legal and policy research and analysis in a professional, timely, and self-directed manner as well as communicating on areas of expertise to support partners or external communications.
Serve as a project manager by designing, developing, and managing projects, consistent with ELIÔÇÖs mission and project parameters. This includes performing, assigning, and supervising delegated project tasks, and ensuring adherence to project budgets and timelines.
Manage and mentor staff assigned to their projects.
Develop outputs on law and policy topics in a range of formats and for many audiences.
Facilitate and coordinate meetings and communications with partners and other stakeholders and represent the Institute publicly as needed to communicate and foster programs and projects.
Develop (and assist others with) grant and contract proposals and provide other development support to secure sufficient funding that supports high-quality programs and projects.
Be available to external parties and partners and engage when there are opportunities to broaden or deepen understanding of key issues or key aspects of ELIÔÇÖs work.

QUALIFICATIONS

J.D. or equivalent degree.
A minimum of 10 years of post-law school experience in the environmental law and policy field.

Assistant Director, Environmental & Natural Resources Law

The Assistant Director of the Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law Program is the second-highest manager of a nationally-ranked program and maintains the programÔÇÖs quality and reputation through personal contact with prospective and current students and alumni, as well as environmental faculty at other law schools, conducts market research to support cutting-edge curriculum and program development, and supports the Environmental-Natural Resources Law Faculty Committee and the Associate Dean/Director in all aspects of the program. The Assistant Director will serve as lead for the international component of the program and the annual environmental law summer school, and maintains the programÔÇÖs national presence by assisting with marketing the program, assisting with all aspects of the Master of Law (LLM) and Master of Studies of Law (MSL) degrees (which are offered both on line and on campus), and helping to organize national conferences and workshops.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

MSL and LLM Programs (in person and online) (50% of the time)

Co-manage the online and on campus LLM and MSL programs with the Associate Dean/Director and provide day to day supervision of the program functions which includes serving as the lead contact for in person and online LLM and MSL students on class selection, careers, paper topics, graduation requirements and other matters, in person, online and via email, or by phone.

Serve as main point of contact for potential online and in person students.

Serve as admissions review, along with Associate Director, for all in person and online LLM and MSL applicants; maintaining Web pages for MSL and LLM programs

Oversee publicity from online vendor.

Participate in online and in person recruiting events and advising sessions.

Communicate with Curriculum Committee and submit summer course proposal on behalf of environmental law program.

Oversee summer marketing publications and web pages.

Trouble shoot and provide support during summer session.

Prepare end of summer report for Natural Resources Law committee each year that summarizes classes, enrollments, and student evaluations.

Events (15% of the time)

Assist with environmental program events, including annual Distinguished Visitor Lecture, Annual Symposium and other events ÔÇô provides oversight for logistics, serves on planning committee for events and speakers.

Clean Energy, Climate, and Environmental Justice Attorney

Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) is seeking a full-time Attorney to join our team working to protect New England’s environment for all people.  The Attorney will work with CLF’s Clean Energy and Climate Change Program and Environmental Justice Program and be based in CLF’s Providence, Rhode Island office with some opportunity for remote and flexible work. The position will be either a Staff Attorney or Senior Attorney depending on the final candidate’s level of experience.

The attorney will be a key player in helping us achieve our mission. The attorney will work independently and as part of state-based and regional teams and coalitions advocating for a just and clean energy future.  In this role, the attorney will both lead and support high-impact, cutting-edge advocacy efforts in the energy, transportation, waste, and buildings sectors as part of an over-arching strategy to tackle the climate crisis while centering environmental justice. 

The attorney will:

  • Devise and execute legal strategies for achieving CLF’s advocacy goals;
  • Develop relationships, build coalitions, and work collaboratively with community and advocacy groups, public officials, and business interests;
  • Build and sustain alliances and coalitions among impacted and allied entities that may include community-based organizations, public officials, business interests, and other organizations;

What you’ll need

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

Attorney Advisor, Environmental Law

The Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia (Commission), a leading utility regulatory agency, is looking for an Attorney Advisor in the area of environmental law. This position is in the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) and is responsible for all legal issues involving the day-to-day operations of the Commission, as well as a broad spectrum of issues that relate to the CommissionÔÇÖs regulatory responsibilities. OGC represents and advises the Commission on all actions and proceedings set forth in the enabling statute or any other legislation. The staff of attorneys prepare orders, advisory memoranda, and assist the Commissioners in conducting all proceedings of the Commission.

This position provides legal utility regulatory expertise to the Commission, General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel and Commission staff on a variety of regulatory matters and issues. The work involves providing legal advice in the areas of renewable energy, environmental and climate change, renewable energy procurements and incentive programs, energy efficiency programs and regulations, climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts. The incumbent also provides legal advice in guiding the Commission in advancing the District of ColumbiaÔÇÖs environmental and greenhouse gas reduction goals by making recommendations related to utilitiesÔÇÖ programs and proposals.

The incumbent drafts orders, memos, motions, and other documents, and prepares briefs and post-trial documents for public utility cases. Conducts legal research and provides detailed oral and/or written advice with respect to proposed actions, alternative actions, and hypothetical situations. Reviews and analyzes records of hearings, including briefs, exceptions, rulings, tentative decisions, and reports of finding of facts and conclusions of law. Prepares and files appropriate responses with respect to such matters. Performs functions related to case and calendar management, e.g., preparation of case-transfer of close-out reports, case file entry, documentation of action, timely review of legal proceedings, and any other administrative functions associated with the conclusion of matters. The incumbent will be under the direct supervision of the Deputy General Counsel.

Develop and lead state-level policies in Arizona that reduce barriers to accessing federal funds to support aquatic restoration and conservation efforts and furthering other hunting and fishing priorities.

Work with the TRCP Communications team to increase the visibility of TRCPÔÇÖs western water policy work and partnerships through blogs and various media.

Cultivate and foster relationships with foundations to secure additional resources necessary to expand campaign work in the region.

Building relationships and representing TRCP in meetings with key leaders from state and national conservation groups and businesses, state and federal agency personnel, and elected decision-makers.ÔÇ»

Provide support for current TRCP campaigns in the Colorado River Basin and other priority western watersheds as needed.

Minimum Requirements:ÔÇ»

A. Position Description

The Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance (SEEA) seeks qualified candidates for the position of director of policy to lead its efforts to advance energy efficiency at the regional, state and local levels. The director of policy will support stakeholders in making thoughtful, informed and inclusive policy decisions across SEEAÔÇÖs region of 11 Southeastern states and five U.S. Island territories.

Reporting to the president, this position will provide substantive expertise on efficient energy policy, regulation, and program models; consult with key stakeholders and decision makers (i.e. legislators, regulators, government agencies), develop relevant content and analysis of regional opportunities and challenges, and facilitate connections to support SEEAÔÇÖs mission and goals.

The director will also manage, support, and coach two direct reports on the policy team in developing state-specific outreach and education campaigns, including identifying appropriate messages, developing outreach strategies, and identifying necessary partners.

B. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Market Insight and Trends

Stay informed of legislative, regulatory and policy decisions at the federal, state, local and utility levels to inform SEEAÔÇÖs strategic direction.
Identify approaches and solutions that address economic and societal issues in the Southeast, including energy insecurity, health, workforce development and justice to ensure equitable access and outcomes for all.
Ideate, deploy and evaluate projects and program initiatives suitable for adoption in the Southeast.
Be a resource on technical topics, industry trends and inclusive decision-making processes to members, decision makers and the media through consultations, presentations and written materials.

Team Leadership

Serve as a creative and entrepreneurial leader to motivate team members, model open communication and collaboration and drive strategic priorities.
Share insights with the president, director of technology and market solutions, director of research, and other team members on policy and program trends to inform SEEAÔÇÖs strategy.
Develop strategic and tactical plans for completing project initiatives, including identifying processes, determining due dates and milestones, allocating staff and budgets, and managing plan execution by staff, partners and contractors.
Oversee program staff by defining role responsibilities, evaluating performance, providing continuous feedback, overseeing hiring, and identifying professional development and growth opportunities.
Engage with SEEAÔÇÖs board of directors and members through committee coordination, facilitation and presentation at SEEA board meetings.

Stakeholder Engagement

Foster trusted relationships with public service commissioners and staff, utilities, energy service companies, state legislators, state energy offices and advocacy organizations to identify barriers and generate solutions to complex policy issues.

Serve as a thought leader representing SEEA at industry meetings (NASEO, NARUC, SEARUC, etc.) to maintain and develop relationships in the energy efficiency community while expanding SEEAÔÇÖs work.
Facilitate regional connections to generate new ideas, share best practices, cultivate new funding or investment opportunities and identify new intersectional partners.
Collaborate with the communications team to develop targeted materials for various audiences for SEEAÔÇÖs website, events, webinars, monthly newsletter, and annual report.
Provide expert insight and share SEEAÔÇÖs regional perspective through presentations, interviews, white papers, blogs, fact sheets, and other forums.

Development and Fundraising

Identify and engage philanthropic organizations to share regional insights and needs, develop project proposals and reports, and secure funding to support program area work.
Collaborate with SEEAÔÇÖs director of membership and corporate development on member recruitment, engagement and retention efforts and identify unserved markets and opportunities to deliver greater member value.
Stay informed of federal and state grant opportunities and identify earned revenue streams that align with SEEAÔÇÖs strategic plan and organizational mission.
Maintain and build new relationships with funders and clients and provide reports on project outcomes, achievements and opportunities for continued partnership.

C. Qualifications

BachelorÔÇÖs degree in public policy, energy or environmental policy, political science, or a related field required.
Advanced degree, credentials and certifications in relevant field preferred.
Minimum eight (8) years of experience in public policy or advocacy, strategy, or program management. Knowledge of the Southeast energy industry and political landscape preferred. Experience working with membership organizations is a plus.
Comfort engaging with decision makers, including government officials and business executives, to acknowledge and understand their responsibilities and motivations, build partnerships, and create strategies to generate value.
Demonstrated experience with cross-functional team leadership, supervisory management, partnership and coalition building, and facilitation across diverse groups of stakeholders.
Proven communication skills, including interpersonal, public speaking and written communication expertise, with an aptitude for translating complex information into concise and easily understandable formats.
History of strong project or program management experience with proven success in meeting deadlines, adapting and pivoting to shifting priorities, and leading teams to achieve organizational goals.

D. Classification & Compensation

This is a full-time, exempt salaried position. The base salary for this position is $90,000 and will be determined based on experience. This position is based in SEEAÔÇÖs main office in Atlanta, Georgia, and may require up to 25% travel.

Ocean Policy Manager

Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) is seeking an Ocean Policy Manager to join our team working to protect New EnglandÔÇÖs environment for all people. The Manager will work closely in the organizationÔÇÖs Ocean Conservation program with an interdisciplinary team of staff to advance CLFÔÇÖs work on sustainable fisheries, marine mammal protection, ocean habitat protection, and other strategic objectives.

This position can be based in any of the following CLFÔÇÖs regional offices (Boston, MA; Concord or Portsmouth, NH; or Portland, ME), with some flexibility to work remotely within New England.

What youÔÇÖll do

Develop and execute advocacy strategies in collaboration with the Ocean Conservation team and external partners as appropriate;
Lead policy analysis and research in the areas of marine fisheries management and other ocean conservation areas;
