I. Job Summary

The Sr Legal Counsel ÔÇô Renewable Energy position will primarily support the CompanyÔÇÖs renewable energy group within its broader sustainability organization. As one of the fastest growing groups within the Company, this role would involve corporate transactional and project development work, as well as potential acquisitions or other strategic transactions in the renewable energy space. This role would also work closely with the CompanyÔÇÖs government affairs group to develop advice on regulatory matters affecting the renewable energy industry.

We are seeking a candidate with strong corporate/transactional experience, preferably with prior experience in the corporate or energy transactions practice group of a mid-sized or large law firm. Specific experience and expertise in the renewable energy industry is a plus, although experience in the waste, recycling or ESG/sustainability areas is not required. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated to lead deals and projects to completion. The individual should be open to handling an evolving set of responsibilities for a rapidly growing and ambitious group of clients.

The Sr Legal Counsel will report directly to the Assistant General Counsel ÔÇô Recycling & Sustainability. This position is based in Houston, Texas.

II. Essential Skills, Duties and Responsibilities

Advise internal clients with respect to, and draft, review and negotiate contracts relating to, transactional matters supporting the CompanyÔÇÖs renewable energy group, including power purchase agreements, RNG offtake contracts, marketing agreements for renewable credits or environmental attributes, project development related contracts, vendor contracts, non-disclosure agreements.
Review and provide legal advice on creative deal structures to beneficially use landfill gas, carbon and other byproducts of the CompanyÔÇÖs core disposal business.
Review and provide legal advice on acquisitions and other strategic transactions involving the renewable energy group.
Coordinate with the CompanyÔÇÖs Government Affairs team to provide broad-based legal counsel on strategy relating to renewable energy regulations.
Review and provide legal advice on renewable energy related disclosures and external materials, such as in the CompanyÔÇÖs annual Sustainability Report and similar disclosures in SEC filings and other communications/publications.
May be responsible for management of outside counsel activities as necessary, including determining overall effective legal strategy.
Provide proactive legal and practical business advice to internal clients.
Engage, collaborate, and build strategic business relationships with numerous departments and functions within the Company to work efficiently and effectively while providing a high-level of service to business partners.

III. Supervisory Responsibilities
This job has no supervisory duties but may occasionally act as a team lead and manage work of paralegals or attorneys. However, the individual will not regularly have support from another in-house attorney and must be able to perform legal functions independently.

Senior Counsel

The Senior Counsel provides legal support for the advocacy campaigns run out of the Washington, D.C., office. The Senior Counsel also advises the campaigns on legal compliance and risk mitigation and assists in administrating the Law Department. The Senior Counsel may also engage in special projects, including researching new campaign issues or geographic areas; providing legal support to campaigns run by other Oceana offices around the world; assisting in defending Oceana against legal claims brought by outside parties; and performing other tasks managed by the Law Department as needed.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Works as an integral part of campaign and policy staff to help achieve campaign and policy goals, including:
Providing strategic advice to campaigns, such as:
Identifying options for achieving goals in view of the relevant legal and regulatory framework; and
Devising litigation strategies and arguments.
Conducting legal research and other analysis necessary to support OceanaÔÇÖs campaigns.
Drafting and contributing informal letters, formal comment letters, and other advocacy documents.
Working with campaigns to achieve goals while minimizing reputational and legal risks of written materials and verbal statements and complying with regulatory requirements, such as lobbying disclosure rules.
Conducting in-person advocacy with outside decision-makers.
Supporting litigation by working with Assistant General Counsel to obtain representation for Oceana; acting as liaison among campaign, Legal Department, and outside counsel; and assisting outside counsel in litigation tasks.
Assists in preparing litigation reports for the Board.
Manages Legal Department interns, including:
Supervising, reviewing work, mentoring, and giving feedback; and
Recruiting.
Performs other administrative work as necessary to support the Department and program staff.

Food & Water WatchÔÇÖs legal team is advancing a broad and creative docket of litigation and regulatory advocacy to counter the many environmental, social, and public health impacts of the concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) industry and advance our long-term campaign to ban factory farms. We are seeking a Staff Attorney to build our legal advocacy to combat this inherently destructive model of livestock production. The Staff Attorney will be responsible for developing and implementing strategic impact litigation at the state and federal level, engaging in regulatory processes, and coordinating with our organizing, policy, and communications teams to effectively integrate legal strategies into our grassroots campaigns across the country. We prioritize legal actions that will advance our long-term goal of replacing the current corporate-controlled, industrial food and farm system with a diversified, sustainable food system that will protect the environment, family farms, food chain workers, public health, and animal welfare.

This position is a Union position covered under a contract between Food & Water Watch and the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU).

Essential Responsibilities:

Research, develop, and implement various legal strategies, including federal and state litigation, to address the impacts of existing and proposed CAFO operations in the United States.
Engage in state and federal regulatory proceedings to strengthen existing environmental and public health protections and oppose regulatory rollbacks. Use administrative strategies to propose and advocate for new protections.
Provide legal support related to CAFO issues for our in-house organizing team and key partners.
Contribute to policy analysis and development, including the review and drafting of local, state, and federal legislation, to promote a rapid shift away from CAFO livestock production to a more diversified, sustainable system.
Attend meetings with policymakers at both the state and federal level to undermine the structural drivers of the CAFO system and promote policy solutions to support alternative systems of livestock production.
Act as a public spokesperson for FWW, including to the media and at public forums, community meetings, conferences, and public hearings.

Policy Advocate

The Policy Advocate is a key member of Coalition for Clean AirÔÇÖs policy team, engaging in the development and execution of CCA advocacy efforts and campaigns. Objectives include advocating for the adoption and implementation of policies to reduce emissions from shipping and freight transportation in California. The position requires an individual comfortable working in a team setting while also being able to work independently and take initiative. The Policy Advocate is based in downtown Los Angeles (with substantial flexibility for working from home some of the time) and reports to the Policy Director. Director of Rural Justice

The Director of Rural Justice is a new position created to support CCEJNÔÇÖs strategic priorities around water, pesticides, and farmworker rights. The position will oversee a team of staff, report to the Executive Director, and work collaboratively with the various team leaders and staff within CCEJN.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership:

Senior Staff Attorney

New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), a community-driven civil rights organization, seeks a Senior Staff Attorney to join our Environmental Justice (EJ) Program.

NYLPIÔÇÖs EJ Program confronts environmental racism and works to eliminate the unfair burden of environmental hazards borne by communities with low incomes and Indigenous, Black, Brown, Asian, and other communities of color in an effort to create a more equitable and sustainable New York. In partnership with grassroots, community-based organizations; advocacy groups; and residents, our EJ team builds campaigns, pursues strategic litigation, designs and develops community-led organizing initiatives, and shapes policy. We support local, bottom-up leadership and strengthen communitiesÔÇÖ ability to assert their right to a healthy and sustainable environment.

The Senior Staff Attorney will work in close partnership with the Program Director to inform and guide the direction of NYLPIÔÇÖs EJ program, including the development and implementation of an integrated power-building strategy for systemic change through community lawyering in concert with grassroots-informed legal and policy interventions. The Senior Staff Attorney will lead legal initiatives and litigation, in partnership and collaboration with the Program Director and Litigation Director. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of serving in prior leadership role(s) with a demonstrated commitment to environmental, racial, social, and economic justice.

This position will work both independently and in collaboration with other attorneys, community organizers, policy analysts, and communications and lobbying experts. The Senior Staff Attorney will have opportunities to propose and develop new campaigns, litigation, and advocacy initiatives and represent NYLPI externally to establish and maintain key relationships with a broad range of decision-makers and stakeholders, including elected and government agency officials, unions, movement organizations, funders, and media. The Senior Staff Attorney will supervise other staff attorneys in the Environmental Justice Program as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

Commitment to environmental, racial, social, and economic justice and community lawyering;
Strong litigation experience and the ability to originate and effectuate impactful legal campaigns;
At least seven years of experience as a practicing attorney;
Ability to work in meaningful collaboration with a diverse range of clients and community partners, including elected and government agency officials;

Director of Policy

Princeton University’s Center for Policy Research on Energy and the Environment at the School of Public and International Affairs is looking to hire a knowledgeable and collaborative environmental policy professional to prepare policy briefs and research summaries highlighting the Center’s research. In addition to assisting faculty and researchers with communicating their work to general audiences and decision-makers, this position will also be responsible for overseeing the work of student associates in preparing policy-relevant research write-ups for Princeton research groups and NGO/industry collaborators.

Litigation Assistant

NRDC is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet’s wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. Position Summary

NRDC is seeking a Litigation Assistant to work with the Litigation Team, to be based out of one of our Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Santa Monica, or Washington, DC offices.

The Litigation Team is a group of approximately 40 lawyers, litigation assistants, and other operations staff who pursue litigation across a broad range of environmental and public health issues in collaboration with and on behalf of communities and people most impacted by environmental injustices (including Black, indigenous, and people of color, and low-income and rural communities). Over the past five years, we have litigated cases against the federal government to prevent climate pollution, challenge agency approvals of toxic chemicals and pesticides, resist the suspension of clean water safeguards, oppose offshore drilling and seismic exploration for oil and gas, defend national monuments, and protect energy efficiency standards, among other matters. We also bring enforcement cases against corporate and governmental entities whose violations harm health and the environmentÔÇöincluding recent cases to protect the people of Newark, New Jersey and Flint, Michigan, from lead in drinking water; to remediate toxic pollution in the Penobscot River in Maine; to abate mold in New York City public housing for residents with asthma; and to halt air pollution from a coal-fired power plant in Illinois.

We are looking for a litigation assistant or paralegal to support the Litigation Team.
Responsibilities

Litigation support duties may include (80%):

Under lead direction of Litigation Team attorneys and/or other Litigation Team members:

Format, proofread, and fact-check documents to be filed in court, including generating tables of contents and authorities, assembling exhibits, etc.
Arrange service of court filings.
Conduct research and summarize court rules.
Proofread legal correspondence, such as cover letters and notices.
Manage and maintain up-to-date case files.
Compute and calendar court deadlines.
With guidance from other Litigation Team members, conduct factual research to advance case development and summarize findings in written memoranda.
Assist with interviewing NRDC members to support anticipated and pending litigation, and draft affidavits.
Assist attorneys with hearing and deposition preparations, including preparing document binders, printing exhibits, creating exhibit lists, etc.
Generate research notes, memoranda, tables, graphs, and other visuals.
Under supervision of other Litigation Team members, review documents and evidence produced by other parties in litigation, and analyze and summarize relevant documents.
Track media outlets, websites, and relevant dockets and issues relating to the TeamÔÇÖs litigation.
Participate in and take notes during conference calls and meetings.
Work in collaboration with other Litigation Assistants and Operations Manager as needed.

Administrative support duties may include (20%):

Process invoices and expense reports, and produce reports on case expenses.
Assist with hiring and orienting new staff and interns.
Schedule meetings, book travel and associated logistics, and assist with organizing retreats.
Additional non-case-related administrative support as needed.
