Environmental Manager – Water

Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM):
Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.

Salary Statement: The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

Role Overview:
This position exists within the Office of Water Quality, Drinking Water Branch, Drinking Water Compliance Inspections Section. The incumbent performs professional and comprehensive compliance inspections of a variety of Public Water Systems throughout north central and northeastern Indiana. The position is critical to IDEM’s mission of ensuring a safe water supply to the citizens of Indiana. The incumbent will perform 75 to 100+ inspections per year. The inspection process includes the preparation of comprehensive inspection reports and effective communications with the clients served by IDEM.
A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

Project Management: You will perform project management duties to ensure effective and timely management of programs, attending meetings, and responding to telephone calls, e-mails, etc., as required. You will be a technical point-of-contact for assigned programs conducting environmental assessments including, but not limited to, environmental media sampling, data analysis, technical writing, work plan and report preparation, technical reviews, etc.
Permits: You will research state and federal guidance, laws and regulations related to permits. As a permit writer you will be required to contact applicants to request additional information to process applications, when necessary. You will be required to respond to comments from applicants, defend permit terms and conditions, and interact with permittees to resolve permitting issues. In this position you will also attend and participate in public meetings and hearings regarding permit actions throughout Indiana and/or appear in legal appeals of permit actions.
Inspection: You will conduct surveys, inspections and investigations of facilities and sites, review projects/situations, read plans, interpret findings, and cite appropriate violations of state and federal regulations. You will provide technical and regulatory guidance to the regulated community in their assigned geographic area.
Enforcement & Compliance: You will use all compliance and enforcement tools and resources available to ensure that regulated sources return to compliance with state and federal laws, regulations, and standards in a timely manner.
Support Services: In this role you will work to support the various programs in your agency in multiple capacities such as performing technical analysis, testing, risk assessment, and GIS Analysis:
Sampling: Assist with the preparation of sampling and analysis work plans. Conduct field work as necessary following agency/section Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for assigned sites; provide oversight of key events as necessary to ensure accurate technical decisions are made.
Technical Analysis & Testing: You will conduct technical analysis using modeling techniques and tools to assess the impacts of sources to meet state and national regulations. You may need to perform repair and maintenance of the monitoring equipment. Calibrate and audit field monitoring equipment and assist in implementing monitoring changes.
Outreach Coordination: You will have to communicate effectively with responsible parties, consultants, and/or their representatives, affected stakeholders, and interested parties such as citizens, public officials, and interest groups in a courteous and professional manner regarding permits, laws, questions, and program-related inquiries.

Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor of Environmental Science

The Department of Geography and the Environment at Villanova University invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor (continuing non-tenure track) position in Environmental Science starting in August 2024. We seek a colleague to teach in the environmental sciences to support the growth of the Department’s undergraduate programs. A Ph.D. in environmental science or a related field is required. Exceptional candidates with at least six years of full-time undergraduate teaching experience will be considered for the rank of Associate Teaching Professor. Opportunities for promotion to Associate Teaching Professor and Full Teaching Professor exist with demonstrated excellence and leadership in teaching, ongoing scholarly engagement, and a strong record of service to the institution. The position is a 9-month academic appointment, and the incumbent will teach 16 contact hours per semester (for example, one course consisting of three hours of lecture plus three three-hour labs per week, or two separate courses each consisting of three hours of lecture and three-hours in lab each week). Our new colleague will primarily teach the two-semester introductory environmental science lecture and laboratory sequence for undergraduate Environmental Science and Environmental Studies majors, and there is also the opportunity to develop and teach more advanced courses and/or courses for non-majors. In addition, our new colleague will be expected to demonstrate continued scholarly engagement with their discipline, develop new educational materials, mentor undergraduate independent research, and participate in departmental and institutional functions and committees. Water Resources Scientist

Normandeau Associates, Inc., one of the nation’s largest science-based environmental consulting firms, is seeking a full-time mid-level Water Resources Scientist. This position will be based in our Bedford, NH office, with an emphasis on water resources, water quality, and related regulatory compliance and permitting services in New Hampshire and the northeastern states.

Qualified candidates will have experience in conducting water quality field work, including use of field instrumentation, water quality sample collection, will have experience with maintaining water quality datasets, and will have strong reporting and data presentation skills.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have excellent field data collection, management, and reporting skills for water quality projects, as well as the ability to independently manage project assignments, and communicate effectively with senior project managers to ensure project schedules and budgets are adhered to. Local and regional travel is required as is the ability to work from and (preferably) operate a boat, and lift/carry moderately heavy equipment at project sites. A proven ability for troubleshooting, problem solving, and critical thinking is essential for the successful candidate. · Task/field leader for conducting shore-based and boat-based surface water quality data collection utilizing deployed and mobile instrumentation in accordance with written study plans and standard operating procedures;

· Task/field leader for collecting water samples from surface waters and groundwater wells using a variety of techniques and sampling equipment in accordance with written study plans and standard operating procedures;

GIS Specialist

Ducks Unlimited- Michigan seeks a full-time GIS Specialist to join our highly motivated team in Dexter, Michigan. The role will work collaboratively with a team of GIS professionals to update the US National Wetland Inventory (NWI), support mapping requests, and connect with partners. The successful candidate will have experience with NWI projects, and excellent skills in GIS, communication, and time-management. The position will report to the Regional Geospatial Manager.

Responsibilities:

GIS data development for the National Wetland Inventory and other projects as needed.
Data management including data archiving, quality assurance and control.

GIS Project Lead

The Land and People Lab at Trust for Public Land (TPL) seeks a GIS Project Manager to lead, manage, and implement the spatial components of the ParkScore index, one of TPL’s flagship products. TPL’s ParkScore index is the most comprehensive rating system ever developed to measure how well the 100 most populous U.S. cities are meeting residents’ need for parks. Every year, the ParkScore cities provide TPL with data on amenities, investment, access, equity, and acreage via our City Park Facts survey and through GIS datasets. A critical component of accurately measuring park systems is ensuring accurate information in our geospatial parks database. As such, this position will lead the data collection and update process aligned with the main categories of the ParkScore rating system, and partner with each city in the ParkScore index to review the results. This role collaborates closely with the Associate Director for Parks Research to coordinate the annual ParkScore data release, analyzing, interpreting and communicating results via presentations, maps, data tables, and webpages associated with www.tpl.org/ParkScore. The GIS Project Manager must be an effective presenter and communicator and highly skilled in the GIS field with extensive experience in all aspects of GIS project development, management, and execution.

Environmental Scientist

Brownfields Redevelopment Specialist

Position Summary:
The Brownfields Redevelopment Specialist will provide technical assistance and guidance, create tools and resources, and conduct educational and engagement forums to help communities assess, cleanup, and redevelop former industrial and commercial properties (brownfields), transforming them into productive reuse. The technical assistance provided to communities will contribute to a greater quality of life by improving health and safety; enhancing environmental quality; promoting use/reuse of existing infrastructure; promoting economic development; making better connections to jobs, education, and health care; creating and/or preserving open space; and creating more sustainable and resilient communities

Essential Functions:
– Provides one-on-one technical assistance to government entities, community organizations, and non-profits throughout the US to strategize how to address their specific brownfield challenges
– Assists communities in: understanding basic brownfields redevelopment concepts; navigating the brownfields regulatory process; identifying funding sources; and understanding technical and scientific reports and data
– Provides funding application critiques and guidance

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, chemistry, or related field; or education/experience combination equivalent
Understanding of chemical safety
Ability to understand and apply Federal, State, and local environmental regulations
Good interpersonal relationship skills
Good communication skills
Valid Driver License with a good driving record and ability to be covered through the College’s insurance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS

Experience working in higher education
Working knowledge of hazardous wastes, air pollutants, and other hazardous materials
Experience in handling of hazardous materials and wastes
Experience in understanding processes that can produce hazardous air pollutants and hazardous wastes
Familiarity with RCRA, DOT, and OSHA regulations
Experience in data entry
Proficiency in various office and spreadsheet software including but not limited to Word, Excel, PowerPoint and ability to learn other software programs
