This position is a nine-month, tenure track faculty in Environmental Science and Engineering to begin August 2023. The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced undergraduate as well as graduate program courses.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The functions below are detailed in the faculty handbook in Volume IV of the Institutional Policy Manual.

Teach 24 credit hours in the academic year or as otherwise specified by the faculty member’s appointment notice; student course evaluations are to be completed in each course. Faculty are expected to employ sound pedagogical practices and to use technology as appropriate, including the University’s learning management system. Faculty shall assist with course revisions and curriculum development as needed.
Achieve appropriate student-learning outcomes in all courses taught.

Required Qualifications:
Education: A Ph.D. in environmental science, environmental health, environmental engineering, or a closely related field of science/engineering. Previous academic experience is preferred.
Experience: The preferred expertise areas include but are not limited to environmental risk assessment, toxicology, and other related areas within environmental science/engineering.

What you will accomplish

Serve as a technical resource for air permit applications or amendments, Title V compliance reporting, development of source category specific emission factors, estimating emissions, and regulatory compliance analyses for various industry sectors.
Following the regulatory requirements and/or greenhouse gas programs, prepare emission estimates based on site-specific information
Prepare registrations for state agencies and assemble other documents as necessary for submittal to the state and local regulatory agencies for our clients
Review air dispersion modeling analysis in accordance with project requirements and guidelines
Support client ESG initiatives with development of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) monitoring plans, performing GHG emission calculations, and GHG data management.
Collaborate with other SWCA practitioners to execute air quality projects, including participating on teams comprised of Air Quality professionals from multiple offices across the organization
Support growth and development of SWCA’s air quality services.
Responsible for executing specific task assignments as requested by the Air Quality Director and Project Managers.

Experience and qualifications for success

A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, chemical, mechanical, preferred. BS in environmental science with 1 year relative experience may be considered.
Two (2) years of consulting experience in one or more of the following air quality areas required: air quality permitting, dispersion modeling, emission inventories, air quality construction and operating permits; and/or compliance reporting. Noise monitoring experience a plus.
Experience in project management, client management and proposal writing or the ability to rapidly evolve into these areas is a plus.
Working knowledge with the appropriate regulatory authorities and regulations such as Green House Gas (GHG), Title V, Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD), New Source Review (NSR), Best Available Control Technology (BACT), Lowest Achievable Emissions Rate (LAER), New Source Performance Standard (NSPS) and Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) is a plus.

Alaska Regional Director

This position will serve as the Alaska Regional Director within the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and will report to the Deputy Director. BOEM is responsible for managing the development of the nation’s offshore energy and mineral resources in an environmentally and economically responsible way. The functions of BOEM include leasing, environmental science, environmental analysis and assessment, resource evaluation, economics, renewable energy, carbon sequestration, and plan administration.

The incumbent carries out the following specific responsibilities:
1. Manages and directs all programs related to energy and mineral leasing activities, environmental studies, environmental assessment, the evaluation of resources, and plan reviews as well as the relationship between State and Federal programs.

2. Establishes goals and monitors progress to assure conformity with national policies relative to access to the OCS for energy and minerals exploration and development, while ensuring environmental protection and requiring prompt and efficient development. Evaluates the extent to which efforts in the Region are responsive to and supportive of national needs and objectives.

3. For protection of the ocean environment, the Regional Director has the responsibility for ensuring that the State and Alaska Natives participate in the identification of environmental concerns with respect to OCS development. The incumbent also oversees environmental studies and assessment programs and the respectful collection and use of Traditional/Indigenous Knowledge in the Alaska Region and ensures mitigation measures are designed and implemented to protect the environment

4.Resolves exceptionally difficult or sensitive managerial and/or operational problems and consults with the Director and the Deputy Director on problems related to policy or matters of long-range planning.

5. Initiates and coordinates information for the Alaska OCS Region, enlisting State, Alaskan Native, local and public participation and cooperation in realizing objectives conceived to implement provisions of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act Amendments of 1978. The Regional Director is the BOEM contact for the State of Alaska with respect to OCS activities.

6. Advises the Director and the Deputy Director on public sentiment in the Region, and analyzes and initiates methods for enlisting State and local participation and cooperation in formulating policies and objectives for major OCS programs. This includes public relations and informational aspects of functional activities related to oversight of oil and gas and marine minerals leasing, development, and environmental protection, as well as discussions of renewable energy potential.

Energy Manager

Primary Purpose:

The primary purpose of the Energy Manager is to lead and implement energy conservation projects across the enterprise and responsible for the development of long-term plans and utility data management.

Work Performed:

The Energy Manager will be tasked with the following duties, responsibilities, and assignments:

Develops comprehensive water and energy efficiency assessments using qualified third-party partners;
Develops business case assessments and ROI analysis which will be used to determine project approvals;
Manage the design, bidding, and execution for projects identified within the water and energy assessments that meet the investment goals of the company this includes managing the budget, timeline, and specifications;
Recommends ideas for more energy-efficient operations and other savings opportunities;
Publishes monthly reports on energy, water, and carbon footprint;
Tracks and report on enterprise consumption, variance to annual reduction targets, costs against budget, and year over year costs;
Partner with property teams to review existing MEP systems or plan future projects to ensure the design information, system layouts, and specifications are accurate;
Lead the energy procurement and Engie Utility Bill Pay programs;
Administration of federal, state, and local rebates and grants;
Executes energy modeling, verification, measurement, commissioning, or retro-commissioning of existing assets; and

Any and all other work as required to complete the primary purpose of the position.

Qualifications:

Required Prior Experience:

5+ years of experience in MEP engineering, building technology, and/or facilities operation with minimum 2+ years of experience in managing utilities and energy systems

Working knowledge of construction and engineering labor and material cost managing

Working knowledge of facilities regulations and safety standards (i.e., OSHA, EPA, ADA, CFC, NFPA)

Preferred Prior Experience:

Knowledge of renewable and on-site energy systems and ability to vet renewable generation business cases.

Ability to create SOW and negotiate long and short-term agreements for bill pay, utility metrics tracking, sustainability consulting and auditing vendors.

A fundamental understanding of a P&L statement.

Hospitality experience.

Compliance Programs Specialist – Water/Wastewater

GENERAL FUNCTIONS: Supports Directors, Managers, and Supervisors with their environmental compliance responsibilities as they manage all aspects of drinking water and wastewater operations. Responsible for the tracking and implementation of compliance initiatives and programs that ensure compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Water Act, and other environmental regulatory requirements. Serve as Industrial Pretreatment Coordinator.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Track compliance with drinking water and wastewater requirements and assist the Operations Managers to implement programs and initiatives that help to achieve company targets and goals.

Perform facility audits to identify needed improvements to maintain compliance and improve operations. Meet with Managers and Supervisors to review the findings and create a schedule to address items in need of improvement.

Ensure internal compliance obligations are met and the compliance task tracking software is being utilizing appropriately and consistently. Prepare and perform training to assist operations as needed.

Review permits and assist operations to develop policies, procedures, and training to ensure compliance with the conditions of the permits.

Advise and assist engineering and operations department during various stages of project planning and design to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.

Assists with compliance reporting efforts associated with water, wastewater, waste, air, tanks, etc.

Identifies gaps in documentation or potential areas of non-compliance and recommend solutions.

Develop SOPs and perform regulatory training to various company departments.

Draft PN notices, advise operations of compliance responsibilities, and track regulatory deadlines.

Reviews and analyzes new and proposed environmental regulations and define potential impact to State operations.

Leads in the development of various types of plans including emergency response, drought contingency, hazardous algal bloom plans, etc. as various needs may arise.

Supports sampling plan development and revision, waiver/reduced monitoring requests, and sample scheduling as needed.

Participates in various professional organizations; attend seminars and training courses when necessary to maintain technical competency.

Research Assistant – Annis Water Resources Institute

Summary: Join the Steinman Lab at the Annis Water Resources Institute (AWRI), operating out of GVSU’s Lake Michigan Center in Muskegon, MI. Assist lab with fieldwork activities in watersheds throughout west Michigan with projects likely including and not limited to lake water quality monitoring; wetland restoration monitoring; sediment phosphorus investigations; lake salinization investigations; and aquatic macrophyte surveys. Assist with data entry, analysis, and reporting. This position is contingent upon the receipt of grant funds.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree (required) or Master’s degree (preferred) in a field related to aquatic sciences such as environmental science, natural resources, biology, or limnology.
Experience in the following: conducting field investigations; collecting and analyzing samples in the field and laboratory; data analysis and report writing; and working in a collaborative, interdisciplinary setting.

Hydropower Engineer

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL, http://www.ornl.gov) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The Biodiversity and Sustainable Systems Section within the Environmental Sciences Division (ESD; http://www.esd.ornl.gov) at ORNL is seeking to hire a Hydropower Engineer with the skills and creativity to apply novel water resources, mechanical, and/or power system engineering knowledge to support ORNL’s long-term water power technologies research and development (R&D) efforts.

Environmental Affairs Specialist/Engineer

This position supports environmental field monitoring and engineering studies for water compliance support within the Compliance Studies group in Alabama Power Company (APC) Environmental Affairs – Field Services. This position provides ongoing field support, data analysis, and reporting for generating facilities in support of environmental compliance and operational efficiency. This position will be responsible for project oversight, and may include designing study plans, operating water quality monitoring equipment, sampling and flow measurement at generating facilities and in river or streams, data management, and statistical data analysis. Additionally, the position serves to troubleshoot any environmental-related issues for our customers within APC, and including Southern Company Generation – Fossil and Hydro, Southern Nuclear, and Southern Company Services.

Education and Experience:

Senior Planner

The Senior Planner independently cultivates, manages, and executes municipal planning projects including comprehensive plans, zoning ordinances, municipal stormwater management, heritage planning and historic interpretation, and other conservation-focused plans to advance the Conservancy’s mission.
POSITION RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to the Manager of MAP. Collaborates with other MAP staff and the Director of Community Services. Manages other MAP staff on project-related work as assigned. Works in partnership with other Community Services, Land Conservation, and Land Stewardship staff to complete overlapping projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Independently cultivates, negotiates, manages and executes municipal planning projects. Participates in public meetings and public hearings as required by the municipal planning code (MPC) and municipal regulations.
Supervises Conservancy staff and associated consultants for project specific tasks and manages project budget. Responsible for review of consultant work for compliance with the Conservancy’s conservation objectives and funding requirements. Coordinates budgets, expenses, and funding reporting with the Budget Manager and Development Department.
Responds to requests for proposals, including organizing the MAP project team, researching the work scope, coordinating the proposal development and publication, organizing and participating in the formal consultant interview, and providing necessary would-be client follow-up to gain selection.
Reviews and provides comments on subdivision and land development applications as per adopted Comprehensive Plan, Open Space, Parks and Recreation Plan, and other relevant planning documents, local subdivision and land development ordinance, zoning regulations and other appropriate municipal requirements for compliance.
Provides programmatic support to the Brandywine Creek Greenway and participates in projects that advance the goals of the Greenway.
Responsible for collaborating with the Development Department as needed in the identification of potential funding opportunities, preparation of grant proposals and grant reporting requirements and funder/donor cultivation.
Prepares reports, project metric data analysis and other requests as needed for project and program related work. Makes presentations to Brandywine Board Committees as appropriate or projects require.
Participates in Conservancy public relations efforts as needed, including contributions to Conservancy publications, and makes presentations to interested groups.
Performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelors degree in regional planning, land use planning, geography, environmental science, ecology, landscape architecture, or related field. Advanced degree desirable.
Five years of progressively responsible experience in local or regional planning or related field, including experience with land use planning and regulatory issues, innovative stormwater management, recreational and/or trails planning, and natural and cultural resource protection.
Working knowledge of Pennsylvania municipal land use regulations, rules and procedures.
Knowledge of GIS application in land use planning.
Willing to devote such time as required to perform assigned functions. Usual work hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Frequent night meetings and occasional weekend work. Frequent travel within Pennsylvania and Delaware and to other places as necessary.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Positive and energetic attitude. Ability to comprehend legal documents and maps. Self motivated with ability to manage complex projects from start to finish.
Must have a means of transportation to and from work and assignments.
