Physical Scientist/Chemist (SOR-101)

Duties: 

Support scientific and operational activities in support of the Laboratory goal of delivering quality results to all customers.

Perform sample preparation and analysis of environmental samples. Assist in maintaining the laboratory operational for routine analysis and assist in maintaining laboratory space compliant with Health & Safety requirements.

Enter and review scientific information/data in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Information such as – standards log in, equipment maintenance activities log in, sample log in, etc.; Data such as – temperature, pH, conductivity, analyte concentrations, Quality Control – recoveries, calibrations, etc.

Participate in market research activities to identify supplies and equipment necessary for laboratory operations. Participate in the draft of documents necessary for acquisitions (e.g., technical aspects needed for a Statement of Work).

Participate in the development and review of QMS documents such as Standard Operating Procedures, Quality Assurance Project Plans, Sample Analysis Plans, etc.

Develop and update tracking systems to assist with management decision making. Some examples include – activity tracker, budget tracker, property tracker, TAT tracker.

Participate in meetings to coordinate operational activities and prepare meeting notes.

Qualifications:

BA/BS Degree in Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry or Environmental Chemistry

Tribal Air Monitoring Technology Specialist (SNV-141)
Management, maintenance, and troubleshooting of ambient/indoor air samplers, air monitoring, and other equipment related to the Tribal Air Monitoring Support (TAMS) Center.
Duties:  
Inventory, calibration, and management of existing and future TAMS Program equipment.

Maintenance, troubleshooting, and upkeep of TAMS equipment. Develop and follow guidelines and Standard Operating Guides (SOG). Prepare, package, track, ship, and receive various equipment in the TAMS program. Recommend purchase of new equipment.

Maintain proficiency with current and future Agency and TAMS Program approved computer software systems and software programs. Hydrogeologist III

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Environmental Services, Waste Management Division, Hazardous Waste Remediation Bureau has a full time vacancy for a Hydrogeologist III.

Summary:

Provides high-level hydrogeological and regulatory expertise and experience in evaluating hydrogeological investigations for the permitting, operation and closure of solid waste facilities. Communicates complex hydrological data and analysis to a variety of stakeholders. Provides analytical, technical, and regulatory expertise for proper management of contaminated soils.

Responsibilities:

Reviews and analyzes complex hydrogeological data submitted by consultants to evaluate site-specific conditions and to form a basis for agency decisions about permitting, operation, closure design and monitoring requirements at solid waste sites, including RCRA Subtitle D lined landfills and unlined landfills.

Interprets hydrogeologic information at waste management facilities and contaminated sites to characterize the source and extent of contamination and approve remedial action plans to address contamination. Also, evaluates data to determine the effectiveness of remedial action plans and recommends changes if the remedial actions are not performing as intended.

Reviews groundwater permit applications and prepares groundwater permits for waste management facilities, to establish groundwater monitoring requirements that ensure protection and restoration of groundwater quality.

Coordinates the review of hydrogeologic information pertaining to solid waste landfills, and other waste management facilities, with other department environmental programs to ensure agency decisions are consistent with achieving compliance with all relevant environmental and human health standards, policies and procedures.

Assists with major enforcement activities and negotiations with responsible parties, municipal representatives, consultants, and attorneys to achieve adequate response and clean-up actions that comply with agency laws, regulations, and policies. Provides expert testimony at appeals, permit revocations and in court when necessary.

Assists the agency in developing procedures, policies and rules for the effective management of contaminants of concern at waste facilities.

Communicates agency rules, policies and environmental goals and procedures to responsible parties and their consultants and lawyers, to obtain understanding and compliance. Also communicates hydrogeological data and results at public hearings for waste facility permit applications and at other hearings and meetings where the public has a high degree of interest. Prepares technical presentations on the extent of contamination and appropriate remedial actions to diverse groups including department senior management, public, consultants, attorneys and responsible parties.

Coordinates and implements a range of technical and regulatory assignments to establish and ensure compliance with best management practices for management of contaminated soils.

Provides input and support for implementing programs, projects and procedures to accomplish the annual and strategic goals of the Solid Waste Management Bureau, the Waste Management Division, and the Department.

Continually seeks to improve practices and add quality and value while identifying and eliminating unnecessary or redundant actions in the Solid Waste Management Bureau.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university with major study in forestry, geology, hydrogeology or a related water resources or earth science degree. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

Experience: Six years’ experience as a professional geologist, hydrogeologist or hydrologist.

License/Certification: Must have, or obtain within one year of hire, registration as a Professional Geologist in the State of New Hampshire. Eligibility for N.H. driver’s license required for performing professional field work.

The Director, Environmental Science serves as the academic administrator and lead entrepreneur responsible for the assigned program. Under the guidance and direction of the Dean, this position performs in alignment with the College’s mission and strategic direction in service to students and their success.

Responsible for management of Hocking College’s environmental science academic program as well as the live learning consulting service of environmental bioremediation.

Conservation Easement Program Manager

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: Performs difficult professional and administrative work overseeing the conservation easement program including donated easements and purchase of development rights easements; does related work as required. Environmental Engineer

GIS Specialist

SFEI is seeking a GIS Specialist to join the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) team. This position will be a full-time position (40 hrs per week), under the supervision of the GIS Manager. A successful candidate will be enthusiastic, self motivated, and passionate about applying technical GIS skills to address environmental problems. You will collaborate with your colleagues to ensure an optimal relationship between science and policy through innovative approaches to information collection, display, and analysis. Although a strong foundation of GIS skills is required, an environmental science background to enable effective landscape interpretation, change analysis, and mapping is ideal.

This is an opportunity to work creatively with other GIS professionals on exciting advanced technical challenges to address some of the most important environmental issues in California and beyond. Your immediate team will include the GIS Manager, Pete Kauhanen, and other GIS specialists, Alex Braud and Regan Murray. However, you will also often work with software engineers, environmental scientists, and experts from across the Institute.
GIS Focus Area Description

The GIS Focus Area is responsible for serving the Institute and external user community’s spatial information needs through collaborative and innovative projects. Its success has provided the Institute with a strong reputation of GIS excellence, regarding spatial dataset creation, spatial tools and analysis, and evocative cartography. The GIS Specialist will work with both technology and science teams to develop and implement GIS methods, tools, and web delivery applications to support local and statewide environmental management. GIS staff work closely with SFEI’s Clean Water program on aquatic contaminant distribution and analysis and the Resilient Landscapes program on wetlands mapping, landscape analyses, and resilience planning. GIS is one of five “focus areas” of the Environmental Informatics Program which provides clients and partners with the most current technology tools available to meet their missions.
Role Responsibilities

Duties are likely to be diverse and will require an enthusiastic, team-oriented individual. Typical duties will include:

Use remote sensing, object based image analysis, and other advanced methodologies to further automate wetland mapping to support the Institute’s aquatic resource mapping initiative (https://www.sfei.org/cari)
Tool development—team-oriented code development of GIS-specific landscape analysis tools
Science-driven methods development—collaboration with SFEI and partner scientists to answer environmental management questions with GIS

Ensure sites and waste disposal facilities are in conformance with government regulations, ordinances and permits, and advises site manager of findings. Inspects industrial and municipal storm water drainage systems and outflow areas, and pollution control equipment to ensure conformance with government regulations and permit requirements. Inspects waste treatment facilities for conformance with regulations. Creates ad hoc reports as needed and develops and conducts a variety of limited duration, scientific studies, such as Total Maximum Daily Load, pH tracking, etc. Assists in performing environmental engineering analyses including examining topographical maps, Geographic Information System (GIS), sanitary sewer and drainage plans, and analytical data to accurately investigate pollutants and place monitoring equipment. Assists in developing and reviewing engineering plans, slug control plans and/or storm water management plans for the implementation of practices to minimize detrimental impacts to the environment, surrounding rivers and streams, collection system, and waste water treatment plants. Collects data used in determining sources of water pollutants. Extracts water and/or wastewater samples from storm drains, sanitary sewer manholes, cleanouts, pipes, streams, etc., for laboratory tests and evaluates data to determine compliance. Conducts training and informational presentations to various groups.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. Requires traversing uneven ground, reaching, bending, and pulling in setting up pollution control equipment and lifting and carrying objects such as water monitoring equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. Requires visual acuity and ability to distinguish colors in order to read various meters. Requires the ability to operate general office equipment such as personal computer and telephone. Requires the ability to operate an automobile.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed in the field in a control room environment to inspect facilities and/or outdoors to conduct environmental compliance inspections. Travels to various sites throughout the City. May be exposed to various weather conditions, fumes, odors, dust and noise.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Environmental Project Coordinator I: Associate’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science/Engineering, Industrial Engineering or related field and four (4) years’ experience in environmental protection, enforcement programs and/or environmental regulations; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. A bachelor’s degree in one of the above fields may be used to substitute for two (2) of the required four (4) years of experience. Storm Water candidate must obtain the required certifications to preform required job duties within 12 months of hire and maintain as condition of continued employment. Industrial Monitoring candidate must obtain the required certifications to preform required job duties within 24 months of hire and maintain as condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as condition of continued employment.
