This position oversees a team of professionals delivering critical environmental programs, including hazardous waste, permitting, stormwater, and more. The Environmental Affairs Manager ensures university-wide environmental compliance through expert oversight of programs related to hazardous and universal waste, groundwater, stormwater, and drinking water. They maintain a comprehensive compliance management system, guiding varied stakeholders across all campuses, field labs, and research stations in North Carolina. Responsibilities include developing and reviewing pollution prevention SOPs, providing hazardous waste training, managing waste in labs and remote areas, conducting sediment control and pollution inspections, and auditing environmental programs and procedures.

The manager collaborates closely with the NC State Facilities Division on managing programs such as USTs, the Air Permit, medical and wastewater management, property acquisitions, SPCC plans, and hazardous building materials for construction projects. As part of the broader EHS team, they contribute to facilities modification reviews, emergency response planning, design reviews, research waste management, and inspections of university facilities and grounds.

Minimum Education and Experience:

BS in engineering or sciences. Minimum work experience: 5 years

The successful candidate should have:

Experience in providing technical input and interaction, support, oversight and implementation of a comprehensive hazardous waste management program to a research community.
Experience managing groundwater, air emissions, and other environmental programs applicable at a complex research institution. *Ability to oversee a comprehensive program that includes inspections, training, development and revision of environmental procedures.

Conducting various environmental sampling and testing procedures;
Preparation of field inspection or sampling reports including field notes and photo logs

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of work experience;
Candidate must have a valid driver’s license;

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or related field;
PEC Safeland training or equivalent;

Environmental Manager

Purpose:

Employee is responsible for the interpretation and enforcement relevant to the Town’s Stormwater Program to ensure compliance with Town, State and Federal requirements. Employee is responsible for supervision of the Solid Waste division and transfer station operations. Reviews and inspects site development plans for erosion and sediment control. This position is under the supervision of the Public Works Director.

Required Knowledge and Abilities:

Maintain comprehensive, current knowledge of all applicable laws, regulations, ordinances, and new trends and advances in stormwater management as well as oversee enforcement of local, state, and federal stormwater requirements.

Knowledge of Town, State, and Federal laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations, policies and procedures; Phase II Stormwater Permit requirements specific to Signal Mountain and in general.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office software, AutoCAD, ArcView¸ GIS, mapping, and other drafting and mapping software.

Ability to read and interpret plans, inspect sites and recognize violations. Have understanding of methods and applications to gain compliance with Phase II and local stormwater ordinance requirement.

Computer, fax, copier, and other office equipment, GPS; measuring, mapping, and testing equipment; vehicle, hydro-jetter and various hand tools.

Educational Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree gained through four-year college/university academic program, specialized training or experience of equivalent length.

Must possess or obtain within 6 months of hire a TDEC EPSC Level I certification.

Must obtain TDEC Level II Erosion Prevention & Sediment Control for Construction Sites (EPSC) certification within 12 months of hire date.

Must obtain SUIT and HAZMAT training within one year of hire date.

Watershed Inspector

Seattle Public Utilities is seeking a Watershed Inspector to protect the pristine Cedar River and South Fork Tolt Watersheds. In this position, every day can vary. While on patrol you may need to enforce regulations, be called to suppress wildfires, respond to a hazmat spill, troubleshoot a malfunctioning lock, or respond to a visitor complaint in the public recreation area.

Education/Experience:

One (1) year of college education in forestry, law enforcement, natural resource management, fire science, watershed protection or a related field OR one year of experience in a field related to forestry, natural resource management, fire science, or watershed protection or related field and one year of supervisory or lead worker experience

OR

A combination of education and/or training which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.

Airport Environmental Services Manager, JFK

About the Role:

Under the supervision of the Physical Plant Manager, the Airport Environmental Services Manager will manage the JFK Environmental Unit 673 in executing the various environmental maintenance activities required to assure regulatory program compliance as it relates to JFK environmental permits. Direct and coordinate the environmental maintenance functions as they relate to the preservation of airport infrastructure and aviation assets. Manage the efficient utilization of overtime-related expenditures to address mandatory regulatory program compliance obligations as well as critical repairs not captured under capital and operating major work programs, conduct weekly staff meetings with supervisory staff to assess, prioritize, reallocate, and deploy environmental resources effectively to assure regulatory program compliance with the goal of attaining zero infractions. Develop, execute, and manage the unit operating budget in accordance with facility needs, agency goals and the departmental business plan.

Responsibilities:

You will manage every aspect of the JFK environmental regulatory programs as they relate to the discharge of stormwater into JFK receiving waters, facility air emission sources and petroleum bulk storage (PBS) facilities with the goal of attaining full regulatory program compliance and zero infractions. Prepare timely submissions to the NYSDEC and US EPA for regulatory reporting purposes. Act as the facility liaison for periodic federal and state regulatory compliance inspections and respond to any noted observations and/ or deficiencies promptly and expertly.

  • Ensure that the facility generated hazardous, non-hazardous, and universal wastes are handled, stored, sampled, profiled, classified, and disposed of in accordance with all applicable federal EPA and NYSDEC regulations. Periodically review and update the site-specific contingency plan for hazardous waste storage.
  • Ensure that unit environmental staff receive the appropriate level of training to handle, store, segregate, transport and prepare waste for shipments to approved TSO facilities. Ensure that spill clean-up materials, personal protective equipment, drums containers, and related equipment inventories are adequate. Periodically review spill response protocols with facility environmental staff.
  • Manage the compliance activities associated with Allied Aviation’s JFK Major Oil Storage Facility (MOSF) license with the goal of attaining full regulatory program compliance and zero violations as it relates to the operation of the Bulk and Satellite fuel farms. The compliance program elements include tank inspections and repairs, tank tightness, and fuel line integrity testing and inspections, fuel hydrant pit inspections and repairs, secondary containment integrity inspection and repairs, geocomposite liner testing and repairs, and tank and fueling delivery system cathodic protection inspection, testing and repairs.
  • Manage, develop, specify, procure, and administer the various environmental facility contracts necessary to comply with regulatory program specific requirements as they relate to the discharge of storm water, fuel recovery and remediation systems operation. Review, inspect, verify, and approve for payment all contractor related invoices. Authorize emergency and extra work when required. Develop, procure, execute, and provide administrative oversight for a facility contract to clean, remove, and dispose of waste material from facility catch basins, exterior trench drains, and storm water manufactured treatment devices.
  • Support JFK capital program management as it relates to critical airport infrastructure rehabilitation, improvements and mitigation projects. Support AMMP projects involving fuel farm infrastructure and fueling facility rehabilitations and repairs.
  • Support environmental sustainability initiatives.
  • Provide operational support during snow and other weather-related emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 8 years, progressively responsible experience in oversight of environmental regulatory obligations (SPDES, MOSF, PBS, SWPP, etc.), technical and regulatory administration, conducting compliance site inspections, reviewing and analyzing environmental data, responding to environmental emergencies.
  • Demonstrated experience organizing a demanding workload in a tight timeframe.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish comprehensive, detailed plans with specific timelines, milestones, and deliverables necessary to meet regulatory requirements.

Field Lab Coordinator

Serve as Field Lab Coordinator, responsible for supporting the delivery of academic field and laboratory-based courses in the Rubenstein School, including administration and coordination of transportation, space needs, scheduling, supplies and equipment purchases, storage, usage and maintenance. Biodiversity Research Biologist

Biodiversity Research Institute (BRI), a non-profit organization in Portland, ME, seeks a field- and data-savvy biologist to contribute to international biodiversity monitoring and research projects. The successful candidate will work within BRI’s Biodiversity Research Program, supporting biodiversity monitoring of insects, birds, mammals, and plants. This position entails both fieldwork and office-based work, developing pipelines that move from data collection to curated databases, data products, visualizations, and reports.

The Biodiversity Research Biologist will collaborate with other BRI staff and contribute to large-scale projects that integrate biodiversity and ecosystem monitoring with carbon and biodiversity credit methodologies. The position will include extended (4–8 weeks per year) biodiversity fieldwork in remote locations, including Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya, balanced with office-based work on data management, analysis, report writing, and manuscript development. The role will require close collaboration with US-based and international partners, especially in Africa, and will emphasize both technical skills and strong communication. It is intended that this position be based at our BRI headquarters in Portland, ME.

Responsibilities

Conduct field surveys of insects and contribute to broader biodiversity monitoring efforts.
Train and support field teams in standardized monitoring protocols.
Develop and maintain clear data pipelines from field collection to databases, analyses, visualizations, and final reports/publications.
Analyze and present biodiversity data using R, Excel, and Esri tools (ArcGIS Online, Survey123, Field Maps).

Environmental Project Manager I

The Environmental Project Manager I is part of a functional group that is responsible for habitat planning and development and environmental review and permitting at the Port. This position is responsible for ensuring that the Port’s developments, asset management, operations, plans, initiatives, and routine activities are in compliance with environmental laws and regulations. The incumbent will work collaboratively with other Port staff, tribal government, outside agencies and other stakeholders to minimize environmental liabilities, complete projects appropriately, achieve consistent compliance and advance the organization’s objectives.

This position will serve as the Port’s Biologist and as the subject matter expert in wetland and fisheries/biology restoration ecology.

Essential Functions

Manages environmental review (SEPA, NEPA) and local, state, and federal environmental permitting process for in-water and upland development and re-development projects.
Manages the Port’s habitat stewardship program and performance monitoring of constructed wetland and fish habitat mitigation sites.
Participates in community environmental meetings and conducts education and public outreach at the Port Biologist.
Responds to fish, wildlife, invasive species, and vegetation management concerns.
Performs project management and coordination as assigned.
Collaborates with Port engineers, design consultants, and other Port departments and executive leadership.
Executes contracts, develops scopes of work and task orders and generally oversees the work of consultants.
Provides general permit compliance support for Port and NWSA projects.

Required Education and Experience

A bachelor’s degree with emphasis in biology, environmental studies, environmental planning, resource management or a related filed is required. A relevant master’s degree may be substituted for up to two (2) years’ work experience.

A minimum of four (4) years’ progres­sively responsible experience in positions requiring analytical ability, working knowledge of environmental laws and programs, and environmental science; public speaking, written communication, coordination, troubleshooting is required.
