About the role

The Environmental Specialist will be responsible for ensuring environmental regulatory compliance at both Alexandria, VA and Huntsville, AL Thermomechanical Treatment (Waste to Energy) Facilities. Under limited supervision, the Environmental Specialist supports the company, regional, and corporate programs by administering policies and procedures which have been developed to maintain compliance with all environmental requirements.

This position is on-site and will be located in Huntsville, AL with travel about up to 30% of the time to Alexandria, VA or located in Alexandria, VA with travel up to 30% of the time to Huntsville, AL.

Key Responsibilities:

· Oversee environmental compliance for the Alexandria, VA and Huntsville, AL facilities.

· Prepare all reports for federal, state and local regulatory bodies. The facilities have regulatory permits or requirements associated with Air, Solid Waste, Wastewater, Stormwater and storage tanks. Reports must be accurate, timely and the employee is responsibility for maintaining all records to be available upon request.

· Proactively work with facility operators and maintenance personnel to resolve and prevent environmental issues as they arise. Must be able to adapt to changing circumstances, communicate well with others and exercise good judgement to resolve issues and meet required deadlines.

· Maintain the facilities’ Environmental Management System. Coordinate with Operations and Maintenance personnel to verify required monitoring, testing, reporting requirements are met and maintained.

· Utilize Ideagen software to manage Action Item Due dates and track environmental activities. Coordinate with facility personnel, other Reworld resources or contractors to complete permit required activities, including but not limited to, Annual Stack Testing, Quarterly CEMS Audits, Quarterly Greenhouse Gas sampling, , ash residue testing, wastewater sampling and stormwater sampling,

· Monitor and Analyze Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) data to ensure accurate reporting required by facilities’ air permits. Communicate any concerns or deficiencies to the Maintenance and/or Operational departments for correction.

· Initiate Root Cause Analysis (RCA), as needed, to identify the cause(s) of environmental non-conformance (ex. Air Permit Exceedance, Chemical Spill, Receipt of Unauthorized Waste) and facility or Reworld resource personnel to apply corrective actions based on the lessons learned.

· Liaison with client-owner and/or environmental regulators (Air, Solid-Waste, Wastewater, Stormwater, Storage Tanks) for regulatory inspections. Participate in environmental audits, as required.

· Maintain Reworld internal reporting and recordkeeping standards (Ideagen ash sampling and data entry, reagent use data entry data entry reports for permit deviations, weekly walkdown reports, inspection reports, etc.) Utilize PowerBI to present environmental data or Key Performance Indicators, as needed.

· Review Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to determine waste disposal requirements, spill reporting, or other reporting requirements associated with chemicals or mixtures.

· Maintain strong working relationship with client-owner environmental department and Regulatory personnel.

· Functions as a proficient environmental/regulatory specialist working within the limits of environmental permitting and compliance issues for Company operations.

· Provides technical assistance and training to facility operations to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and/or company environmental regulations.

· As time allows, participate in community outreach events.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental science, or equivalent and a minimum of 5+/- years of experience in the environmental field; especially the air (or solid waste) field.

· Must have strong written and oral communications skills and demonstrate ability to work creatively within the regulatory framework. Must have a high attention to detail, self-motivated, organized and accountable.

· Strong computer, technical, and writing skills are needed.

· A working knowledge of VA & AL state environmental regulations and federal environmental regulations in air required (waste and water is a plus).

Engineer II – Environmental

This position is responsible for writing and issuing NPDES permits to ensure the protection of Delaware’s water quality. Evaluate NPDES applications and monitoring data for technical completeness. Conduct site visits and prepare technically sound permits that include defensible regulatory requirements that reflect site-specific conditions. Work includes preparing calculations, modelling, letters, memoranda, testimony, and presentations to support permitting actions. Other duties include developing and maintaining specialized knowledge of NPDES procedures including Reasonable Potential Analysis, Whole Effluent Toxicity Methods, and the Copper Biotic Ligand Model. Plan and conduct field studies, surveys, R & D projects, investigations and use ArcGIS and as needed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Engineer II
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
1. Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Environmental, Industrial and Chemical Engineering OR official notice of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination in Environmental, Industrial and Chemical Engineering administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

2. At least one year experience in Environmental, Industrial and Chemical Engineering OR possession of a Masters degree or higher in Environmental, Industrial and Chemical Engineering.

Environmental Quality Technician

The Environmental Quality Technician prioritizes the well-being of the animals in our collection by ensuring their environment is carefully monitored. This role is critical as a healthy and stable environment is essential for the health and safety of our animal collection. Responsibilities of this position include monitoring, recording, reporting and effecting appropriate changes to environmental parameters at New England Aquarium in accordance and compliance with institutional, federal, state and local regulations and policies.

This is a full-time regular position offering a comprehensive benefits package. The schedule will be Tuesday – Saturday from 8a – 5p EST. There is some flexibility to move the start/end times slightly earlier or later if needed. This position may require working weekends, some holidays, and occasional early morning or late-night shifts. Work must be conducted on-site.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Monitors environmental quality of exhibits, holding tanks, life support systems, intake and discharge water, using chemical, electronic, microbiological and electrochemical methods in compliance with Aquarium, local, state, and federal policies and regulations.
Records and analyzes data on environmental quality and distributes to appropriate staff.
Assists the Environmental Quality Director to organize, train and supervise volunteers to monitor water quality.
Implements, monitors, and maintains aquatic life support system technologies and water-borne pharmaceutical treatments in conjunction with relevant staff.

Assists the Environmental Quality Director to Monitor quantities of lab supplies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Training and Experience

Bachelor’s or associate degree in life sciences, environmental engineering, biology and/or chemistry, or professional experience managing or monitoring water quality including laboratory experience, experience with waste water systems, or other similar professional experience.
Basic computer skills including Microsoft Excel and Word applications required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Familiarity with analytical chemistry techniques, including spectrophotometry preferred.

Ecologist (Postdoctoral Research Fellow)

The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI), Washington, DC. NZCBI plays a leading role in the Smithsonian’s global efforts to save wildlife species from extinction and train future generations of conservationists.

SUMMARY
This Ecologist – Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is in NZCBI’s Migratory Bird Center. The position aims to train the postdoctoral researcher to conceive, plan, and conduct highly specialized research in the incumbent’s area of specialization. The Ecologist will work with scientists at the Migratory Bird Center, the U. S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Eastern Ecological Science Center, and the U.S. National Park Service’s Inventory and Monitoring Division (NPS I&M) to provide statistical support to NPS I&M wildlife monitoring programs and to perform scholarly research that answers complex and quantitative questions about wildlife population trends and how wildlife in U.S. National Parks are responding to climate change or other anthropogenic impacts on the environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Apply advanced statistical approaches to analyze wildlife monitoring data, using climate and other environmental variables as covariates, from across the National Park system.
Evaluate NPS I&M survey designs and monitoring programs; recommend improvements to survey methods and data collection.
Provide training workshops and virtual office hours for NPS I&M staff. Participate in a community of practice (including NPS staff and other partners using NPS I&M data) exchanging ideas on analytical approaches, coding, and sampling designs.
Lead-author and co-author refereed publications derived from the work of this position and present related talks at professional meetings.
Travel and fieldwork in remote locations as required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience:

A. Degree: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that involved at least 30 semester hours of coursework in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

B. Combination of education and experience — at least 30 semester hours of courses equivalent to a major in any combination of biological sciences, statistics, or mathematics, with required course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Waste Management Coordinator

The Sustainability Division is a division of the City Manager’s Office and is primarily geared toward addressing climate change through greenhouse gas mitigation and adaptation and resilience efforts. The Division oversees development and implementation of the City’s Climate Change Action Plan, development of plans and programs to respond to sea level rise, and community engagement efforts to ensure communitywide participation. The Sustainability Division also oversees refuse and recycling programs and administers the franchise agreement with the City’s waste hauler, Marin Sanitary Service.

THE POSITION

The Waste Management Coordinator is responsible for a variety of waste-management activities for the City of San Rafael, including compliance with state regulations such as SB 1383. The position will be responsible for the implementation and coordination of public-facing refuse and recycling programs and projects, including the City’s new illegal dumping program, in addition to coordinating waste management activities across all City departments and with the City’s franchised waste hauler.

This position will interface with the Marin Hazardous & Solid Waste Management Joint Powers Authority, Zero Waste Marin. The Waste Management Coordinator has day-to-day responsibilities of implementing zero waste activities, policies, and programs, including outreach, training, tracking, reporting, and policy analysis. The incumbent will exercise considerable independence and judgment in carrying out assigned duties and will be responsible for issuing citations for non-compliance with local ordinances.

Environmental Biologist

Our Wastewater Treatment team is looking for an Environmental Biologist to perform bacteriological and toxicity analyses using approved methodology. This person will collaborate with City departments, government entities, and environmental organizations for water quality and environmental projects.
Our lab works throughout the treatment process on testing to ensure that water being discharged into our waterways protects the health of our environment and our community.

Experience, Education, and Training

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology or closely related field of science;

AND

Five years experience in a microbiology laboratory with related environmental and chemical testing experience;
Work experience must include biological analytical procedures along with the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment: microscope, Microtox analyzer, Idexx system, and dissolved oxygen meter.

PREFERRED

Experience in the use of other laboratory field equipment.

Licensing/Certification

Must possess current Driver’s License;
Must obtain and possess DS1 Drinking Water certification with MDNR within the probationary period.

PREFERRED

MWEA Laboratory Analyst Certification;
Missouri class “D” wastewater license.

Environmental Specialist I

Under general supervision, this position will be responsible for all technical and professional activities related to stormwater, primarily those that are required under the federal mandated National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) MS4 Permit Program. The position also supports special projects and assignments like sea level rise and resiliency research projects. Performs related administrative work as required. Reports to the Environmental Program Manager.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Conduct field investigations of facilities and stormwater drainage to evaluate compliance with environmental codes and ordinances, recommend modifications to ensure regulatory compliance, and maintain case files for documentation.

Attend pre-construction meetings to discuss erosion control maintenance of construction sites.

Assist in managing the surface water quality and sediment monitoring program. This includes submitting water quality data into the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Watershed Information Network (WIN).

Collect and maintain technical environmental data, interpret the results of laboratory data, evaluate ecological and environmental impact, and develop reports on specialized studies.

Develops and implements stormwater public education programs for the public, schools, community groups, and businesses. Educational programs may include partnerships with local and state universities for research purposes.

Assists City staff with aquatic and pond plantings in City owned stormwater ponds.

Assist in updating the Stormwater GIS (ESRI) Mapping System.

Performs all duties in compliance with established policies, procedures, schedules, and standards of safety and quality.

Supports and assists with sea level rise and resiliency projects including City of Dunedin’s Vulnerability Assessment and Adaption Plan, living shoreline installation, and other resiliency related projects etc.

Prepares and assists with emergency response for events like hurricanes, as directed.

This position is Category B for the purposes of Dunedin Emergency Management. The incumbent may be required to be onsite/available as scheduled during times of emergency as declared by the City/County Commission or City Manager.

Environmental Analyst

NEIWPCC is seeking a full-time Environmental Analyst to serve as the regional coordinator for the Long Island Sound Partnership (LISP), assisting with the planning and implementation of activities and projects to restore and protect the water quality of the Long Island Sound.

What You’ll Do

As a NEIWPCC Environmental Analyst, you will:

Work alongside internal and external partners and act in a coordinator capacity for water quality, watershed health and nitrogen reduction activities and projects.
Co-chair the Clean Waters and Healthy Watersheds Work Group; participate in TMDL implementation, evaluation and revision; review and analyze MS4 annual report data.
Assist with the implementation of the LISP Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) nitrogen reduction plans and measures and provide grant and project management.
Build partnerships with and assist municipalities in evaluating and assessing local policies and programs to determine how they align with the CCMP and connect municipalities with appropriate funding sources to implement priority projects.

What You’ll Bring

The successful candidate will have a passion and interest in preserving and advancing water quality. Ideally the candidate will have:

A degree in environmental sciences, natural science, earth science, biology, chemistry, or related field with three years of related experience.
Knowledge and experience with project management, grant management and budget oversight, as well as watershed management, nonpoint source pollution, and water quality monitoring.
Experience working cooperatively with a broad range of stakeholders and the ability to facilitate and present at large meetings to a variety of audiences.
Understanding of federal and state environmental laws and regulations related to LISP as well as basic knowledge of GIS is a plus.

Logistics

This full-time NEIWPCC position will work 7.5 hours per day and is based in Albany, NY. Duties will be performed largely in an office setting and will require regular travel, for which a valid driver’s license and private means of transportation is required. After six months, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule, subject to approval and program needs.
