Assistant Marine Scientist

The successful candidate will join our Shellfish Research Team at the Marine Resources Research Institute to assist with our Section’s work related to molluscan ecology, oyster reef mapping, oyster restoration, living shorelines and shellfish aquaculture. Specific duties will include laboratory and field research, data collection and analysis, biological sample collection and data management, preparation of reports and presentations, authoring technical manuscripts, coordination and supervision of team personnel, proposal preparation, and budget management. Some projects will include work on multi-disciplinary teams.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A Ph.D. in field related to job duties. Writing skills, as evidenced by at least one (1) peer-reviewed publication
Preferred Qualifications

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in biology, marine science, or a closely related field. Individuals should have demonstrated abilities to conduct applied molluscan ecological research including experimental design, sample collection, data acquisition, management and analyses, as well as manuscript and report preparation. Experience working in tidal creeks and estuarine environments and knowledge of South Carolina oyster reef ecology preferred. Experience with population and community ecological analyses preferred as well. Publication record required; successful grant funding record preferred. Applicants must also have knowledge of current molluscan research needs and the capability to work independently as well as effectively on teams. District Professional Engineer

SUMMARY

This position administers Title 25, Chapter 102 of the Department of Environmental Protection Rules & Regulations of the Clean Streams Law involving earthmoving activity in Montgomery County to protect, reclaim and restore water quality. Main duties are associated with the review of NPDES permit applications. He/she also promote, conduct and coordinate environmental education and outreach.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs Post Construction Stormwater Management (PCSM) reviews of NPDES permit applications in accordance with Chapter 102.
Participate in NPDES pre-application meetings and coordination with the design engineer and applicants through the permit reviews.
Conceptual and technical evaluation of proposed Erosion and Sediment Control (E&S) Best Management Practices (BMPs) and Post Construction Stormwater Management (PCSM) BMPs.

Evaluate descriptive narrative including watershed, soil type, contours, surface water runoff calculations, and E&S/PCSM design specifications.

Position Summary:

Field Technician, Gulf Coast

The Atlanta Botanical Garden’s (ABG) Conservation & Research Department is seeking a Field Technician to assist with field work and data entry related to several projects located throughout the Florida panhandle and lower Alabama. This is a field-based position with the ability to work from home during data entry activities. This position has variable hours (up to 40 hours/week) depending on project needs and plant phenology. The position requires overnight trips of up to 4 nights at a time. Fuel, lodging, and meals are covered during these trips.

This is a temporary position beginning in early May and ending in September or October, upon completion of 987 hours

Key Responsibilities

This position works closely with the Gulf Coast Program Manager on plant conservation efforts in the Florida panhandle and Alabama. Tasks include but are not limited to:

Inventorying and monitoring of rare, threatened, endangered, and culturally significant in-situ plant populations across the Florida panhandle and lower Alabama
Searching for new populations of rare species
Assisting with field collection of seed, leaf tissue, cuttings, herbarium vouchers, and other plant materials using methods consistent with department protocols

Hydrologist

Trout Unlimited seeks to hire a self-motivated and highly capable project manager to identify, plan, and implement projects to benefit aquatic resources, watershed health, and native and wild fish populations in Northern Colorado. The hydrologist will work cooperatively with partners of diverse backgrounds and interests to develop and implement a variety of projects. The project manager will represent Trout Unlimited (TU) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) in collaborative settings, actively and effectively participating in stakeholder groups to advocate for positive outcomes for coldwater fisheries.

The hydrologist position is responsible for planning and administering watershed-related projects and providing professional expertise in hydrology programs across the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and the Pawnee National Grasslands (ARP). The hired candidate will be employed by Trout Unlimited (TU) and will work directly with U.S. Forest Service (USFS) staff to support agency capacity on watershed restoration projects. TU and the U.S. Forest Service anticipate this position to be stationed at a District Office on the ARP.

The hydrologist will provide support for watershed restoration efforts on the ARP. This may include activities ranging from low-tech process-based restoration to large infrastructure projects with road and culvert improvements.

Desired Qualifications:

Minimum of a graduate degree in hydrology, biology, ecology, or a related field, or five years of relevant experience in watershed restoration, fluvial geomorphology or hydrology, biology, or a related field.

Regional Engineer

Ducks Unlimited, Inc., the world’s leading wetland and waterfowl conservation organization, is seeking a civil or geotechnical engineer to join a team of highly motivated engineers and conservation biologists responsible for the planning, design, and construction of diverse wetland, tidal estuary, and wildland restoration projects in the San Francisco Bay Area and coastal California. Qualifications

Environmental Program Manager

The Town of Clayton is seeking applicants for a Environmental Program Manager for the Engineering Department.

Hydrology Senior Research Associate

The National Audubon Society is a leading nonprofit conservation organization with 120 years of science-based, community-driven impact, dedicated to protecting birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow.

The Hydrology Senior Research Associate is a full-time position and is responsible for coordination and collection of hydrological data and all hydrology equipment within the mangroves of the Everglades National Park and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and other areas. The Senior Research Associate leads hydrological purchases and primarily works independently on repairing, maintaining, and occasionally assembling hydrological stations to ensure all equipment is functioning and actively collecting data. The Senior Research Associate is responsible for downloading, quality assuring, and maintaining critical long-term hydrological datasets. This includes downloading data twice per week, submitting regular data submissions, and working with the Senior Biologist to complete reports or publications in a timely manner. Sites will be accessed using helicopters, powerboats, canoes, kayaks, and by foot (wading) while transporting high-value equipment through challenging mangrove environments.

The overall operation at the Audubon Everglades Research Station (AERS) is accomplished through an integrated network of several data collection teams (hydrology, submerged aquatic vegetation, prey fish and wading birds); with the Hydrology Senior Research Associate leading the hydrology project. In addition to the hydrology project, the Senior Research Associate will provide support to the fish team by collecting prey fish once or twice per month. This role is on-site at Audubon Everglades Research Station in Tavernier, FL.

Compensation: $26.62 – $28.75 / hour

Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field required.

3-5 years’ experience working in marine, estuarine, or wetlands environments. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.

Ability to obtain and maintain a Helicopter Crew Member Certificate (S-271) by the Office of Aviation Services U.S. Department of the Interior is required for this position. It is mandatory that the Senior Research Associate keep all certificates up to date to be authorized to fly with the National Park Service.

Ability to obtain and maintain an NPS Personal Identification Verification (PIV) card; this includes completing a federal background check.

Computer experience with spreadsheets, statistical analyses and database management programs is required.

SDI-12 coding and previous experience working with data loggers are highly preferred.

Willingness and ability to work long hours (sometimes on weekends or holidays) in the field in subtropical wetland environments, exposed to the harsh South Florida environment (sun, heat, biting insects, wading in water or mud with potentially dangerous wildlife) often alone.

Ability to traverse 3-8 miles a day through varying terrain, ability to maneuver up small trees and balance on branches and roots with or without accommodation.

Ability to swim and lift 60+lbs with or without accommodation.

Comfortable as a crew member on small aircraft, projects will involve travel in helicopters.

Experience driving and towing small boats.

Valid Driver’s License required.

Ability to troubleshoot mechanical equipment such as trucks and boats (e.g. jump start a vehicle or change a flat tire).

Strong organization skills and flexibility in planning.

Excellent communication skills within and outside their own specific department. Ability to explain and clarify information regarding matters specific to their own area of work.
