Core Responsibilities

What We Are Looking For
Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, geology, hydrogeology, or related technical degree from an accredited university.
Required 1-5 years of full-time professional environmental experience in site remediation, UST closures and due diligence in New Jersey.
Understanding of Site Remediation Reform Act (SRRA), the Administrative Requirements for the Remediation of Contaminated Sites (ARRCS), the Technical Requirements for Site Remediation (TRSR), the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Field Sampling Procedures Manual (FSPM) and technical guidance documents.
Excellent communication skills, strong problem-solving abilities, and technical writing skills.

40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER training and current with 8-hour refresher courses.

Environmental Programs Specialist

Environmental Programs Manager

Position Description:

Manage city environmental programs to meet stormwater National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) requirements for western Washington, protect local lakes and creeks, implement the city’s forest management plan, develop a climate resiliency program, and manage the city’s solid waste contract. A critical part of this work is managing the city’s stormwater capital projects (two to three projects per year). Employees in this classification apply for and manage grants, manage consultant contracts, review consultant deliverables, develop new programs, manage budgets, and represent the city in meetings with local and state staff. Successful applicants will be experienced in developing and implementing public outreach, education, and involvement campaigns. Other duties also include documenting pollutant spill response and updating the stormwater comprehensive plan.

Oversee and supervise stormwater inspections for existing development and new development.

Propose new or amended city ordinances to meet new requirements, complete city code update process to city council approval

Develop and monitor the utility budget, assure resources are available to fund capital improvement projects, maintain, inspect water quality and contracted services; establish internal systems to track resource expenditure.

Identify necessary stormwater improvements, identify deficiencies, update basin plans, and develop 6-year and 20-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) as part of stormwater comprehensive plan updates.

Investigate program and project grant opportunities and prepare applications.

Assist with public and private development stormwater permit plan review.

Staff Environmental Engineer I

Position Overview

This position will assist the project team and Project Manager in providing field support, and technical assistance on environmental investigation and remediation projects.

Position Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in relevant technical field.

Ability to safely perform various routine field activities including but not limited to applying proper sampling techniques for all environmental media and overseeing and directing subcontractors.
Exhibits strong work ethic, positive attitude, and general enthusiasm for the work.
Entry level data evaluation and analytical skills.

Essential Duties

Field Activities:
Assists other technical staff in calibration of sampling/monitoring equipment, soil sampling, well installation, development and purging, groundwater sampling, vapor/indoor air sampling, remediation monitoring, and oversight.

Project Assistance:
Assists project team in preparation and review of data tables, soil boring logs, and figures and other components of technical reports.

Physical Demands/Work Environment Conditions

This position works predominantly in the field working independently or as part of a larger team at exterior project sites (i.e., industrial/brownfield facilities, monitoring wells, treatment systems, construction projects) to perform sample collection, recording of operational/meter parameters, and oversight of subcontractors (e.g., drillers, heavy equipment operators, truckers). These field activities require the ability to drive to different project sites and physically move around outdoors in various terrains, in adverse weather conditions and occasionally for extended or irregular hours. Conducting work involves the use of hand-held monitoring instruments and tools, as well as water sampling equipment, which requires the ability to routinely lift and carry objects, stand, walk, reach, bend, squat, kneel and twist. Office work is primarily stationary/sedentary using a computer and keyboard/mouse requiring repetitive hand movements.

Plants of Concern Research Assistant

The Plants of Concern Research Assistant assignment will be 25-week, 40 hr/week position beginning in mid-April, involves monitoring rare plants in the Forest Preserves of Cook County (FPCC) through the Plants of Concern (POC) program, a widely recognized community science program. The position is based at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Duties include collecting field monitoring data, helping recruit and train volunteer monitors, entering/analyzing monitoring data, including GIS applications, and assisting with reports. The Research Assistant will have the opportunity to present accomplished work at a Plants of Concern volunteer event. 2-3 days of weekend work possible.

Responsibilities

In the Plants of Concern Research Assistant role, you will be responsible for the following:

Develop schedule for fieldwork
Recruit, engage, train, organize, and support community science volunteers
Act as liaison between FPCC ecologists and stewards and POC staff regarding plant locations and volunteer assignments

Junior Wetland Specialist

Weston & Sampson is seeking a full-time entry level Wetland Scientist to support our ecological/permitting group in our Reading, MA office. The candidate will support fieldwork efforts for wetland delineations, wildlife habitat assessments, vernal pool surveys, and construction monitoring/oversight. The candidate will support multiple projects simultaneously and will have the opportunity to represent the company and our clients at public meetings, workshops, meetings with federal, state, and local agencies, and meetings with other stakeholders in conjunction with permit application review. Experience in wetland delineation and assessment and regulatory permitting is a plus.

What you’ll do:

Conduct wetland resource area delineations, wetland mitigation site design, construction period erosion and sediment control inspections and reporting
Utilize GPS equipment in the field to support wetland resource area delineations
Conduct environmental monitoring and mitigation to ensure consistent documentation and compliance with environmental requirements of permits/licenses

Postdoctoral Associate – Fisheries Oceanography

SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: This position supports the research and development of projects related to the interactions between offshore fisheries and wind farms. This includes, but is not limit to, conducting trawl surveys on board fishing vessels, using optical and acoustic methods to assess the behavior and distribution of fish around wind farm turbines or similar structures. Additionally, the candidate will develop novel observational and analytical methods to evaluate the impact of wind farm on fish, fisheries and ecosystem. The applicant must be able to perform duties on fishing and/or research vessels for up to 10 days at sea. The candidate will act as lead field scientist for field research related to trawl surveys and optical/acoustic monitoring. The successful candidate will be expected to act as a major research scientist managing related projects and supervise research assistants, graduate and undergraduate students, and temporary staff while conducting work in the field and in the lab. The candidate will develop and prepare research proposals, write project reports, and prepare manuscript for publication. This position involves interacting with fishers, offshore wind farm industry, funding agencies and collaborators.

Research Associate Professor

The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) invites applications for the position of Research Associate Professor to begin as early as August 2025. Biology Supervisor

JOB SUMMARY

Supervises, assists and trains laboratory personnel in the analysis of various sample types following approved Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) methodology. Evaluates and coordinates staffing, equipment and resources to ensure the analytical and regulatory needs of both internal and external clients are met. Maintains the highest quality standards as set by the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP). Validates data against data quality and regulatory compliance requirements from a variety of biological and analytical techniques and instrumentation. Performs other duties of a similar nature as may be required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

– Analyzes and maintains quality control/quality assurance data on samples from microbiological, bacteriological and biological testing procedures.

– Supervises and directs staff to ensure adherence to regulatory methods, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Sewer District policies. – Prepares and presents lectures about new methods, procedures and instrumentation to other government agencies, educational institutions, environmental and scientific organizations as well as the public.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION

Candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree preferably in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE

– Candidate must possess three (3) years progressively responsible analytical laboratory experience, with at least two (2) years of progressive experience utilizing microbiology, toxicology and advanced chemical and biological techniques. Extensive knowledge of advanced instrumentation and interpretation of data produced, biological and chemical theories, good laboratory practices, EPA methodology and effective supervisory practices required.

– Previous supervisory experience preferred.

Environmental Scientist

The Wetlands and Waterways Section (WWS) manages permits for activities affecting subaqueous lands and tidal wetlands, operating four core programs: Subaqueous Lands, Wetlands, Marina, and Water Quality. In addition to permitting, WWS provides technical support to federal, state, and local governments, as well as to industrial, commercial, and other entities. WWS staff handle permit applications in line with state regulations, advise on minimizing environmental impacts, offer expertise on wetlands and stream restoration (including hydrology, soils, and flora), and provide information to the public and businesses on the Section’s responsibilities.

Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Life, Physical, or Applied Science or related field.
Six months experience in environmental or natural resources project management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating environmental or natural resources projects to ensure objectives are met.
Two years’ experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
Two years’ experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
Six months experience in using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
Six months experience in technical report writing.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

Possession of a Masters degree or higher in an environmentally related scientific discipline OR Bachelors degree or higher in an environmentally related scientific discipline and current professional certification.
Possession of scientific prominence or recognition with publication in a scientific or trade journal.
Three years experience in environmental or natural resources project management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing and evaluating environmental or natural resources projects to ensure objectives are met.
Three years experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
Three years experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
