Assistant Program Director, Applied Climate Studies

Warren Wilson College welcomes applicants for an Assistant Program Director position in the Master of Science in Applied Climate Studies (MACS) program, a low-residency graduate program enrolling its first cohort in June 2025. This exciting new program provides a great opportunity for an experienced and motivated academic professional to be part of designing, building, and managing a deeply applied program to address what may be the most critically important issue of this time. Warren Wilson College is known for our commitment to addressing climate issues for decades, and this MS program builds on that and is engaged in a partnership with Warren Wilson’s Center for Working Lands and its Climate Action Now initiative.

The MS in Applied Climate Studies program combines cutting-edge on-site experience, experimentation, and demonstrations with on-line and virtual work in climate science, climate data analysis, data visualization, communication, climate justice, policy, planning, management, decision-making, and leadership. The experience is grounded in 12-day residencies that take place each June, offering field skills, facilitation skills, field trips, and other in-person experiences that prepare students for the program and provide platforms for students to demonstrate lessons and competencies. In fall and spring, on-line classes provide content, projects, and skills building. The program offers professional skills modules that complement the offerings of each semester. Students also work on small teams with a community partner on year-long projects that allow them to apply what they are learning in the classes and build experience.

We seek a highly motivated climate professional with a STEM background, a sustainability mindset, and project management experience to work collaboratively in managing this graduate program. Competitive candidates will have a minimum of a graduate degree and previous professional experience in events or program logistics coordination, preferably in a higher education setting. The ideal candidate will possess a high level of fluency with multiple software platforms including Zoom, Google suite, Microsoft office, familiarity with Moodle, and web content management. Previous teaching experience, including online teaching in higher education is desired. This is a full-time, exempt benefit eligible position. Occasional travel, some driving, and evening and weekend work hours during program residencies are a part of this position. Working with the Director and Graduate Programs Manager, the Assistant Program Director collaborates in many aspects of designing and delivering the MS in Applied Climate Studies program. This position is responsible for 1) managing the applied research projects (team-based and individual (including students, community partners, and academic faculty); 2) assisting with recruiting of students into the program; 3) designing and leading parts of the residency; 4) collaborating on management of the program; 5) advising students in the program; 6) teaching class sessions on professional project management at the residencies and in on-line courses; and 7) supporting program direction and management in many other ways. There is also the potential and desire for this person to design and teach one (or parts of several) of the substantial on-line courses in the program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A graduate degree that connects to the mission of the program.
At least one year experience teaching in an academic setting.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate/collaborate with a broad range of constituents (including community partners, faculty, students, staff, and others).
Demonstrated ability to design and teach project management modules; Ability to assist and guide students in project management.

Assistant Professor of Environmental Science

Summary:
As a tenure-track faculty member in the Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences, the person in this position will teach courses for the Pollution Monitoring and Control track of the Environmental Science and Technology degree program. Teaching responsibilities will include lower-division introductory courses in environmental science and pollution science, as well as upper-division courses on pollution detection, monitoring and mitigation, and regulatory compliance. The person in this position will also teach lab courses that have both laboratory and field components.

The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours of in-person courses per semester. Scholarship in the discipline, involvement with advising, and service to the department and profession are expected

Environmental Project Scientist

Whitman is a multi-discipline firm. We are currently seeking an Environmental Project Scientist with three (3) years of experience to join our environmental consulting team based out of the Somerset, New Jersey office. We are looking for an environmental professional looking to continue their career growth performing environmental field work and office activities supporting Whitman’s environmental project managers/LSRPs. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in environmental science and excellent analytical skills. This position will require working on multiple projects concurrently with demanding schedules. This requires the candidate to be self-motivated, independent, results-oriented and able to re-prioritize as required. This position provides the opportunity to learn and grow technical competency by receiving on-the-job related training under the supervision of environmental project managers and LSRPs working on a variety of projects.

Familiarity with the NJ Technical Requirements for Site Remediation and NJDEP Field Sampling Procedures Manual, as well as experience conducting soil/groundwater sampling and vapor intrusion sampling, is a must. The candidate must have 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER training and necessary 8-hour refresher courses.

Senior Scientist

General Responsibilities:
Conduct environmental site investigations, assessments and surveys to sample, measure and analyze air, water, material, and soil. Identify, evaluate and recommend risk and remediation strategies/designs to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. Prepare applicable permit applications, risk assessments and technical documents including proposals, reports and regulatory agency correspondence. Design systems and environmental protection plans. Projects may include Phase I/II environmental site assessments, ecological and natural resource field surveys, tank closure assessments, asbestos abatement, storm water management, and site planning and permitting.

SUMMARY 
Under general supervision performs professional water quality monitoring and laboratory analyses that comply with all applicable QA/QC standards, legal regulatory requirements and policies.  The duties of this position include sample collection, laboratory analyses, record keeping, and equipment maintenance.  The Senior Laboratory Analyst position is distinguished from the Laboratory Analyst II role by its broader responsibilities and higher level of independent work, which include managing the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), preparing regulatory reports, providing technical and functional leadership and training to assigned personnel, supporting the Laboratory Director when needed, assisting with maintaining ELAP accreditation, and overseeing internal laboratory programs.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

Collaborates with LIMS technical support for updates and writes and edits reports to ensure effective data management and regulatory compliance. 
  • Performs specialized analytical studies focused on source control, process control, or other elements related to water quality management and analytical procedures.
  • Troubleshoots and sets up new laboratory equipment to ensure it meets regulatory requirements and operational needs of the laboratory.
  • Collaborates with equipment manufacturers to address any issues and optimize instrument performance.
  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned.

Environmental Manager

We are seeking an Environmental Manager to work on the DSA-2000 project (https://www.deepsynoptic.org/), a world-leading telescope that is currently in the final design phase. The array will use 2000, 5-meter dishes to observe at radio wavelengths (0.7 – 2 GHz frequency range) to survey the skies 10x faster than any radio telescope current or planned. The telescope will conduct a broad range of research, including the study of the formation of galaxies, the search for cosmic explosions, and investigations into the nature of gravity. A key component of the construction readiness is the permitting of the future site for the project. The project is located near Ely, NV within a majority portion of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property. The Environmental Manager will support the Lead Project Manager with the site permitting and compliance process.

The role will be fully remote but will require site visits to the project site from time to time. Other travel requirements to Caltech in Pasadena may be required as required for in-person team meetings. This position within Mecklenburg County’s Water Quality Program (under the Stream Team) performs a variety of activities which includes stream morphology assessments/surveys and restoring surface water quality conditions in Mecklenburg County. This position requires strong team skills to be proficient in performing field activities of surveying, collecting, and analyzing datasets to assess/determine conditions of unrestored/restored streams. In addition, this position must be proficient with GIS as well as surveying equipment; GPS units; water quality monitoring instruments such as YSI multiprobes, ISCO automated samplers; mobile data collection systems; and cellular phones.

Laboratory Analyst

The College of Agricultural Sciences, Agricultural Analytical Services Laboratory at The Pennsylvania State University seeks to fill a full-time Laboratory Analyst position for the water and environmental testing programs beginning in January 2025. The Agricultural Analytical Services Laboratory (AASL) supports the education, research, and extension missions of the College of Agricultural Sciences by providing analytical testing and research-based recommendations to inform sustainable resource management decisions. The laboratory offers testing programs for agricultural, horticultural, and environmental materials, including soil, manure, biosolids, compost, plant tissue, and water. The laboratory is accredited for drinking water and environmental testing by the PA Department of Environmental Protection.

This position will work primarily in the laboratory’s water and environmental testing programs but will assist in other areas as needed. Requires attention to detail and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment. Typical duties include sample receipt, chain of custody documentation and worklist generation, preparation of samples for analysis (subsampling, filtration, preservation), preparation of sample kits, reagents and standards, operation of analytical instrumentation and equipment, and generation and review of data reports. Assays performed by the position include total, suspended dissolved solids, total coliform and E. coli, pH, alkalinity, ion chromatography, turbidity and trace element testing.

Required Experience and Education:

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, agricultural, or environmental science, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates should be proficient in the use of MS Excel and Word and have experience using relational databases.

Additional Preferred Education and Experience:

Preference will be given to candidates with laboratory experience testing water, environmental or agricultural samples.

Research Assistant (Part-Time)

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) is seeking a part-time Research Assistant based in Fairbanks. This position will prepare for and conduct field work such as setting up and testing various instrumentation, purchasing supplies, and conducting laboratory experiments.

To thrive in this role, candidates need to be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Have experience with data analysis software (e.g., R, SPSS) as well as knowledge of research methodologies and experimental design. You must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. In addition, strong organizational and time management skills are essential. The ideal candidate will have experience with field work, laboratory work, data analysis and statistical software.
